Eagerly anticipated, this update of the highly regarded third book from pinball author Michael Shalhoub includes over 900 color photos and covers the most recent period in pinball history, from 1982 through 2011. Each chapter is devoted to a specific year and features descriptions, release dates, and historical background on the games released that year from manufacturers Gottlieb, Williams, Bally, Data East, Stern, Sega, and others. Current values are listed for each machine shown in the book. Interspersed with the games are stories and interviews with many of the legendary designers and artists who created them. Readers will gain fascinating insight into the planning that went into the games, how the designers and artists got their start in the industry, behind-the-scenes tales of life in the pinball world, and more. Michael Shalhoub s Pinball Compendium is a great documentary of our business, says designer Steve Ritchie of the second book in the trilogy. Along with its two companion volumes (the first covering the 1930s-1960s and the second covering 1970-1981), this book is a must-have for all who love the sights and sounds of the world s great pinball machines.

Tough to Find A Great Book on Pinball
By Billy-Bob
I was hoping this was gonna be the best pinball book I had read to date. It covers the era I'm most interested in, so I was really glad to obtain a copy at less than list price. The photography is very good, the layout is nice, and the paper is top quality. What I did not get was detailed information on each (or hardly any, for that matter) of the games. The author spent 80% of his effort tracking down the designers, programmers and sound guys. This is all very interesting, but each one is asked the same question: "Tell me how you got into the pinball biz." Each one has the same story: "I was in college and loved to play pinball. I sent Williams (Bally, Sega, etc.) a letter asking for a job. Whattaya know, they hired me. I worked on lots of cool games--it was the best time of my life!" Man, this gets old after the first twenty such stories! I loved hearing about these guys (at least at first), but this format is amateurish and shows a lack of imagination by the author. Ask a different question, perhaps? Medieval Madness, Creature From The Black Lagoon, Addams Family, Twilight Zone, Monster Bash--how are these games to play? What sets these games apart from each other and from the second tier of games? How do some of the cool toys actually work--how hard were they to incorporate into the game? What nifty features were left out due to financial decisions? What do top tournament players think about these games and others? You won't get that kind of info in this book, unfortunately. For the kind of money this book commands, I expected more. I'm still waiting for the best pinball book ever.

Disappointing, kind of a letdown...
By Spiro Agnew
Everything I was looking forward to in this book--big colourful pictures, in-depth descriptions of machines, insider insights--fell short of expectations. The pictures are small and do not offer close-up photos of the unique details of each game. Descriptions and dedications by the author are poorly written (at best) and are very vague. The only redeeming qualities of the book are the interviews and notes with the folks from the pinball industry and the guys that built the machines. Instead of this book being a tome that should be on every pin-head's shelf, I would say take a pass and just source the Internet Pinball Database instead. The IPDB has all of the pictures, information and reviews anyone would need when looking for a specific machine. This was the first book in the series that I purchased, and I'm sad to say I won't be buying the companion Compendiums (1930s-1960s and 1970-81) because of the poor overall quality of this one. Nothing would have pleased me more to give a rave review of a book that attempted to keep the pinball dream alive, but alas, I cannot.

Following on from the series
By robert angius
The book does go into more detail of the problems/downfall of the companies involved in the machines. The graphics are always good.I think that this book could have elaborated more on the foreign manufacturers of European countries. The downturn of the market of the 80's and rebirth of the 90's,then a total shift by 2000 was enhanced with a movement away from the traditional American manufacturers.
