Amazingly answered my questions though some details traumatized me a little
By fb4321
I came across this book accidentally at a time when I was greatly troubled about the plight of women throughout history, including in the Old Testament. I wanted to seek answers. Whereas there are books that address suffering and confusing situations, I think the strength, clarity and effectiveness of this one come through how it was presented as a first-person testimony, not just a theological treatise based on logical reasoning, and how the author really emerged victorious, healed and joyful in the end. She takes us with her through her journey and her family's, such as what they were thinking during the incident, immediately afterwards, and later on. She also included testimonies from her own family members and husband and how they wrestled with questions, thoughts and decisions. The writing style of all of them interestingly enables readers to see the struggle and victories as if you were in their shoes through their vivid descriptions and personal introspection. I was blessed by the faith of this family who clearly know and believed God's Word as they wove truths and promises through their accounts. Most importantly, they shed light to God's work in, with, and through them as they went through this very difficult situation. I am only giving four stars, however, because I am not sure if some parts of the detailed account of the evil event were necessary; I have to admit, it traumatized me a little. Some readers who pick up this book because they are already distraught with the idea of rape but who have not gone through that experience may feel quite overwhelmed with that part of narration. So just a heads up. I would say, if you really have a tender spirit, perhaps skip that chapter. (As a note, including might be cultural because having been born in the Philippines, I remember that crime reports are not as veiled and are often descriptive). Overall, this book gave me deep and satisfactory answers to my questions because I cannot deny their testimony. However, it also shattered some feelings of security or a simple perspective of the world and left me with some new inquiries in my walk and faith that would be the next part of my journey. I would say, if you are not ready, perhaps don't read this book yet; however, if you are like me and you really reached that point where you need answers, this book might be a valuable resource for you. Also, like what the author's husband shared, if you are struggling with pornography or sexual thoughts, this account might also help you overcome it as your eyes get opened to the gravity and truth of how evil and terrible darkness is, including rape.

The beauty of God's sovereignty amidst rape
By Sandy Lorraine
If God is truly good, how can He allow a monstrous evil such as rape to happen? Joy Tan-chi Mendoza's story is just that - a young girl raised in a Christian household by parents who are faithfully serving God yet was violently gang-raped at 15. If God is truly powerful, why didn't He stop it? How could God turn a blind eye at something so horrible? Or did He?
"And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose."
Romans 8:28, ESV
This is probably one of the most difficult passages that I find in the Bible yet one of the most comforting as well. How we define good doesn't always parallel God's definition. Goodness to us may mean a work promotion, travel opportunities or perhaps a new car. We do not see calamities, cancer or the death of an infant as inherently good. Yet the Psalmist declares, "It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes." (Psalm 119:71) We were never promised by God a life free from pain or tragedy. Ultimately, for those of us who love the Lord, ALL things work together for good. God is able to redeem even the ugliest of our experiences and turn it into something beautiful because that's who He is. He's a redeemer.
We rest in the comfort of God's sovereignty knowing that His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways. God certainly doesn't owe us any explanations. He doesn't owe it to Job, to Joy, to me or to you. When God spoke to Job, it wasn't to provide him an explanation on why his ten children were killed, or why the Sabeans and Chaldeans murdered his servants and stole his livestock, or why he was suffering from a painful skin disease. Instead, God so very eloquently delivers a speech on His fearsome creatures, the wild beasts, the storehouses of the snow, the chains of Pleiades and the cords of Orion, and so on.
The point is, we know very little about God's splendid creation. If God can run this entire universe, if He knows the minute intricacies of it, then we can surely trust that He knows what He's doing when he allows us to go through suffering.
The tragedy that happened to Joy and her family many years ago is still being used by God to minister to those who have undergone similar circumstances. Who are we to say that God cannot bestow a crown of beauty instead of ashes for those among us who grieve? He did it for Joy and her life is a testament to God's goodness amidst rape.
Violence did not end Joy's story. It didn't define her. The bigger, overarching lesson is that God is greater than our suffering. In His infinite wisdom, He can use our pain in ways we would never imagine. All for His glory and His alone, because He deserves it.

God centered
By Liz Andrade
The flow of the book is an easy read and it feels like reading a friend’s letter. That’s why it feels so emotional. I could not help my tears well up.
I like how it starts with the book of Job, where the hedge of protection was lifted. I have read the book of Job many times, Joy Tan-Chi Mendoza’s life story helped me to understand what it means. God is sovereign.
I think any reader can tell immediately that God is in the center of this book. There's a sense of peace and calm on how the book was written. How marvelous it is to know that God can restore any person who went through such trial.
Part if this book is also a picture of a beautiful love story between Joy and her husband Edric. I think single ladies will really appreciate this part because it gives hope. Only God can paint such a wonderful picture!
I particularly liked the words written by her parents Pastor Peter and Deonna (that really brought eyes to tears). They gave good a godly perspective on the issue.
I also like the chapter about Hope! Just because I think I really needed to read that chapter. God is the God of hope no matter what. I also shared this book with the ladies in my small group!
