Essential Reading

This book should quickly become the agreed-upon standard for Old English literary history. It is a significant advance upon Greenfield & Calder's book, which was already very strong. But Fulk & Cain's history, arriving after a period of unnecessary skepticism and uncertainty (about matters such as the dating of Beowulf and other OE poems), is more than just a history: it is an evaluation of what we know and don't know about the dates, contexts, and uses of these texts, and a very judicious one at that. Clearing away the mist of undue skepticism and trendy but improbable arguments, this book sets the ground for a new era of confident, serious Old English scholarship.
