The annoying, hateful heroine ruined the book for me ....
By FromTheSouth
Caro LaFever is a master of what I consider good old fashion Harlequin style romantic, antagonist angst. Her International Billionaire series seems to confirm this every time I read one of its books. Though I must admit Wife By Force seemed overdone in regards to the heroine’s anger and unforgiving behavior towards the hero, who is trying to make amends/win her heart after an almost decade long separation.

**spoilers possible**

Yes, my fellow romance book-loving friends, I get she was hurt when he rejected her affections at her 17 year old birthday party. But, honestly, now that she is nearing 30 surely she should realize why. Let’s see, mainly because she was still a minor back then, and he was 24! That was not just an age gap but a huge maturity difference between them, folks. With an ailing father and duty calling him to make the family business a priority, our handsome hero also knew neither family would accept their relationship at that point in time. Of course, it would have been helpful if he had simply just explained it to her, instead of deliberately hurting her to push her away. Even arranging for her to go to school in England.

What he wasn’t counting on was for her to be manipulated into marrying a man 20 years her senior a year later, which, by the way, only proves this girl lacked sense and sensibility in regards to romantic relationships. Wouldn’t you agree? Surely, there are some heads out there nodding in agreement.

Though keeping tabs on her from afar, she’s returned to Italy a widow with an excess of marital baggage due to an implied abusive, controlling marriage with a man who left her a virgin. Now I’m sensing some eye-rolling over that disclosure, because that’s exactly what my initial reaction was. Sure, it was explained. But really? I just didn’t buy it.

She’s got her walls up and is as equally determined to reject him as he is to win her over. These two go at it, folks, to the point I found her verbal barbs quite tiresome and, frankly, mostly nonsensical and downright bitchy. Honestly, by mid-way I found myself thinking this woman has quite the active imagination in her OTT unbased, hate filled hero bashing verbage. It was then I started to suspect the inevitability of him giving up on her and then her wanting him back. Poor guy, his karma is going to be wishing he had not pursued her in the first place!

If you haven’t guessed it yet, let me be point blank. I couldn’t force myself to finish this book. I couldn’t stand this annoying, hateful heroine. In fact, she ruined this storyline for me so much, even though they marry at 50% into it, I couldn’t stand another moment of her cutting remarks, back and forth, whiplash character. The hero now has my condolences for his unfortunate attraction to her. Sure, I’m certain they get their HEA, but she really doesn’t deserve one.

If you aren’t into second chance romances with a determined hero willing to put up with verbal abuse, you’ll want to skip this, as well. Otherwise, read at your own risk. I’ll eventually try another book in this series, after my residual anger/disgust for this heroine dissipates. I’m thinking that is going to take quite a while.

Title: Wife By Force, Author: Caro LaFever, Pages: 311, stand-alone but part of a series, HEA, second chance romance, virgin heroine, unlikeable heroine, determined to get the girl hero.

Seductive with a great plot
By ina white
This book captured my interest when I read the summary. Very well written with strong characters that I could bond with. I couldn't put the book down ,I had to know the outcome. I knew they would get a happily ever after , but the obstacles each had to overcome is what made it an interesting read . I would suggest this book to anyone that enjoys a seductive romance. Will read more books by this author

Liked the emotional drama
By dora la exploradora
Lara Derrick had been badly hurt and still was carrying the heavy baggage of her past. Her self-confidence had been damage. She was still feeling the rage of her lost and needed to harder her heart until she healed completely. When she met Dante Casartelli again, after twelve years trying to mend her heart, she felt like she would crumble. She saw him as she remembered him controlling and exerting his will but she would not succumb. She had secrets and pain to hide. She felt stronger and smarter now and she would fight him. Dante Casartelli had given up his freedom because after his father’s death he was The Casartelli. No other choice for him. His duty was his family and the business. For Lara he did what he had to do, the honorable thing. Now at last, she was back and he would try again. Intense the feelings, the emotions, the attraction between this two characters that were affected by the circumstances at a given time. Dante bad choice of words, Lara youth feelings and hasty decisions brought despair to both of them. Liked Dante’s insight process, how the author presented his unconditional love for Lara and suffered Lara’s doubts about herself. Good pace, hot sex, some suspense and much emotion. Really liked the story.
