A Modern Look at the Tarot

As the Tarot Host at BellaOnline.com, I come across an abundant amount of information regarding the Tarot.
This book has been in my collection for a number of years, and it rarely makes its way back onto the bookshelf!
Great for beginners and experienced Tarot readers alike, it provides numerous examples to explore the Tarot and apply it to specific queries about one's life situations, in modern, clearly presented terms, by interpreting the traditional properties of the Tarot and applying them to ideas embedded in lifestyles of today.
I would certainly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in learning how to read and incorporate the Tarot into his/her interests.

The Definitive Introduction to the Wonders of Tarot!

It's an unimposing volume. You'd almost never notice it. But within seconds of picking up this book, your cards are before your, and meanings you never dreamed of are before you, in plain, concise language! And more, if you take the time to go through the book as a whole, you'll have an understanding of the Tarot that will inspire you to further study, and engage your intellect on a level you never dreamed possibe. Kaser assumes no previous knowledge on the part of the reader, so the rankest beginner can have immediate, and satisfying results! The more experienced reader will gain insights, and interpretations unexpectedly fresh and delightful. If you're a newcomer wanting to learn about Tarot and its mysteries, this is the FIRST book you should buy. If you're the experienced reader, consider a fresh, new approach. A must on the serious diviner's bookshelf. Buy without hesitation.

Tarot in 10 Minutes - A Day

Alright - so it's not truly Tarot in ten minutes. But, if you're willing to devote just ten minutes a day for about three months, you'll come away with a much deeper understanding of Tarot.

There are a total of 29 exercises in this book - that's about a month altogether - and I'd recommend going thru it more than once.

The first time, go thru it for yourself. You will find out a lot about the surface meanings of Tarot in the first run thru these exercises.

The second time, go thru it for others. You will find out quite a bit on how to do readings for others with these exercises.

The third time, go thru it for yourself again, but this time looking for the deeper meanings of the images.

Kaser uses imagery from the standard Rider-Waite deck of tarot cards - although these pictures would have benefited greatly from being in color, they're all right as black & white sketches.

The quick reference guide at the end serves as the 30th "lesson". There are a couple of Tarot card layouts, and a nice master index section for reading to understand the meaning of the cards in four different situations - work, love, money, and strategy.

There's also a strange index in the back that you will find refers you to the proper lesson for dealing with questions that you can find the answer to thru Tarot cards.

All in all, a worthwhile reference for those starting out with Tarot cards.

Now's the time to collect

Divorce attorney Jared has witnessed so many happily ever afters turn into disasters. He feels marriage is not for him. But as the oldest of six boys and with the sting of recent marriages of his cousins, the pressure is on. Mother Westmoreland wants a daughter-in-law and grandbabies yesterday! To appease his mother, Jared along with the help of Dana come up with an elaborate plan to pretend to be an engaged couple. But who is fooling who? Will this divorce attorney have a new outlook on marriage?

Ms. Brenda has outdone herself again! I can't wait for some more Westmoreland.

When we practice to deceive....

If you are a Brenda Jackson fan such as myself, you're more than likely patiently waiting for Chase Westmoreland's story--well, you will just have to wait.

In her latest addition to the Westmoreland series, Ms. Jackson introduces us to Dana Rollins. Her fianc�, Luther Cord, reneged on their engagement and now he wants the ring back. He has hired the gorgeous high-powered attorney Jared Westmoreland to represent him. Doing what any lawyer is paid to do, Jared convinces Dana that it would be in her best interest if she complies with his client's wishes. Feeling she has made the right decision by giving the ring back, Dana extends Jared an invitation to one day return the favor.

Being the eldest child, Jared's mother expects him to set an example for his other siblings by bringing a guest to his father's and uncle's birthday party. Knowing full well he doesn't have a steady girlfriend, Jared is at a loss on what to do. He runs into Dana and asks her to accompany him to the party. Since she owes him a favor anyway, she says yes. While at the party his eavesdropping mother overhears the word engagement, so naturally she believes that Jared and Dana are engaged. When Jared stops by his parents' house to inform them of the misunderstanding, his father shares with him some devastating news regarding his mother's health. Not wanting to see his mother unhappy, Jared asks Dana if she would just pretend to be his fianc�e, but makes it perfectly clear that she would be expected to perform as his fianc�e, in every sense of the word. The problem Dana faces is enduring Jared's heated kisses and his many other tantalizing advances.

In true fashion, Ms. Jackson has written a very delightful romance filled story. The novel is well-written with a wonderful storyline, and the well-developed plot makes JARED'S COUNTERFEIT FIANC�E a splendid read. Whenever I get my hands on a Brenda Jackson novel, I feel like a kid in a candy store. I'm counting the days until the next book in this series, The Chase Is On, is released.

The Story of Antebellum America

If you already have basic knowledge of a given era or topic in American history, a great way to augment your understanding of that era or topic is to read the corresponding Major Problems in American History volume.

These books are designed as upper-level college textbooks and have the readers examine original source documents, read essays written by professional historians, consider various viewpoints on the issues raised, and then draw their own conclusions.

The 1992 version of the volume on the republic's early decades covers the time period from 1787 to 1848 and examines a wide sweep of issues such as the Constitution, politics, economic downturns, westward settlement, slavery, territorial expansion, capitalism, wars, social trends, and gender and racial issues.

Two of the documents, one written in 1829 and the other in 1841, read as though they could have been written today--the former lays out, with a few exceptions, what today's liberals believe about income equality levels and equality of result, and the latter takes the position that today's conservatives support, one emphasizing a more freewheeling system based on equality of opportunity.

Books in the Major Problems series do require much of the reader, but they reward the effort--they give the reader a much more complete picture of what life was like when the events happened than one gets from a more general history textbook.

Growing Pains of the USA

This is a fine text to remind one of how tough, and politically tricky, it was getting the US established as a country, constitution, states rights, etc. etc., including the pros and cons debated over slavery, the economy, dealing with other nations, the impact of the Louisiana Purchase, the connection between slavery and the Monroe Doctrine, the rise of evangelism, the market revolution, the issues regarding banks, tariffs, the Indians, the West, farmlands, . . . it all seems endless, culminating in whether or not the Union would break up . . . all in all a good read, except for the print font, much too small, causing a takeaway from enjoying the book for what it's worth new, as it's much too expensive for the casual reader.

A fun continuation of the series!

Aimee's Wolf Rampant series definitely steps up from being a standalone in this sequel, not only building upon what was established in the first novel, but also laying the groundwork for a much larger story overall. The protagonist Terra goes from being a lost soul to a young woman with a clear role in life at the onset of Pack Princess -- but now she has to grapple with the trials and tribulations of living up to it!

While the first book had more romantic and coming-of-age themes at the forefront, Pack Princess is, in some ways, more of a traditional shifter tale of inter-pack politics, rivalries, drama, and betrayal, all centred around a heroine thrust into a role she is not quite ready for. It was a nice change of pace from the previous book, doing a good job of maintaining a lot of what made it enjoyable without ever falling into the trap of retreading the same ground.

One of the things I especially enjoyed about the first novel was its snappy pacing, and I feel that Pack Princess does a good job of pulling off "same-but-different" in this regard as well. The first half of the novel is ostensibly slower than that of the prequel, but this works fine to establish Terra settling into her new role as alpha, and to lay the groundwork for everything to come later on. The latter part of the book, however, ramps up the drama much more strongly than Shiftless did, building everything to a very tense and emotional climax with a lot more clout than I was expecting!

There's a very solid self-contained story to be found in Terra's acclimation to her new role as alpha, along with reconciling her pack's place in the world now that the "golden age" of her powerful father's leadership has ended, but by the end of the book the gates are flung wide open for a third instalment in the series. Things have changed in an irrevocable way, a new (and seemingly much more volatile!) status quo has been established, and several threads are left hanging that you just *know* are ripe for tying up in book three.

Overall, if you enjoyed Shiftless, I'm sure you'll enjoy the sequel! For the most part it sticks with the same light, enjoyable tone (complete with a particularly cute little character interview segment to recap on a few things), but isn't afraid to go slightly darker and more intense as things ramp up to their climax.
I didn't think about this so much in the previous novel, but on reflection I think this series would be absolutely perfect for new adult audiences and general fans of werewolfy adventures alike!

Great adventure!

This is the fourth book I've read of Aimee Easterling's and as always, I am impressed with her ability to write a smart, intriguing novel. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I enjoyed this one even more. This novel is more of an adventure and takes the reader deep into the world of werewolves, unlike any other way I've seen werewolves portrayed. Aimee does a great job of shifting (no pun intended) from human to werewolf seamlessly. The author never lets the reader forget that the characters are not human, even when they're in human form and dealing with human issues. The werewolf in them is always there and there is an animalistic (I'm not even sure if that's a real word!) quality that is always there, which makes the telling of the story from a werewolf's experience more plausible.

I am curious to see where the series goes next. The book had a climactic end, leaving the reader wanting to know what will happen to Terra, Wolfie and her band of yahoos. I liked seeing how the pack matured from the first book and to see Terra growing even stronger, embracing who she really is.

My only desire for the book (and this is because I'm a hopeless romantic!) is to see more of Terra and Wolfie's relationship in a more sensual form. The chemistry is hot between these two characters and I would love to see more of just the two of them and the passion they share for each other. Not everyone enjoys that stuff, but I do. This did not deter me from the story at all though because I really just want to see them end up happy together. This story is more of an adventure though...the sensuality between Terra and Wolfie would merely be icing on the cake for me!

I'm anxiously awaiting the release of book three! Once again, Aimee Easterling's amazing way with words has created an exciting adventure that does not disappoint!

Brilliant sequel!

Again I must own that Werewolf fiction is.....correction...was not my genre of choice. Having read Shiftless, the first story of Terra the alpha female...I greedily wolfed down the sequel, Pack Princess. (Pun ntended!)
Aimee's style is compelling, she combines action and pathos....confidence and vulnerability. ..in equal measure. I search for plot holes ( my pet hate) in all I read and found none in Pack Princess. Her presentation of the psychology of a wolf pack is both accurate and biologically sound. Pace is key for me in all I read. ..long turgid descriptive passages adding nothing to the story send me daft....no such problem with Aimee's writing..she keepscthe plot moving at exactly the right clip. She is a born storyteller. Am I a fan? Oh yes!!!

Good explanation of lean principles

I have been involved in manufacturing for most of my career, and while it sometimes seems like lean concepts are intuitive and have been around forever, that is not always the case. My current employer has embarked on a big lean program and this book is something that provides an easy to read and understand explanation of the concepts. It would be well suited for anyone from production employees and supervisors to department managers who find themselves needing to understand a new way of thinking.

Don't be put off by the "dummies" nomenclature; this book provides a good overview of all the concepts and ties them together well.

Physician, Heal Thyself

Leaving aside the question of whether LEAN is the answer to the world's problems, or just the next management fad, my opinion of this book is heavily dependent upon what I think it is supposed to accomplish. I believe it is mediocre at being a narrative overview of what LEAN is all about, but that it fails miserably as any sort of guide or reference book. Since the title is "LEAN for Dummies", I guess it is only fair to rate it as a narrative overview. More experienced readers will tire of the "wordy" format, opinions and lack of summaries and easy references.

Some sections of the book are quite good. The summary and descriptions of the types of waste (Muda, Mura and Muri) are first rate, with reasonable examples of each. Further, there is a nice table summary of the 7 types of Muda, and even a brief description of type 1 versus type 2 muda (stuff that you really can't eliminate versus stuff you can). In short, this section is what I believe the book should be about. Three pages that you can read in about two minutes, and have an appreciation for the concept. No one will ever confuse you with an expert, but you won't embarrass yourself either.

Other section of the book border on horrible. Control charts, one of the most common features of a LEAN implementation, are skipped over in a page or two. There is an example chart, and a statement "Typically, as long as the sample values fall between the upper and lower control limits, the process is 'in control'. However, if the distribution is systematic and non-random, this is an indication of special causes..."

No idea what you are supposed to make of that statement. Nor is there any hint as to how to calculate upper and lower control limits, or even x-bar. A check of the index indicates no hits for CpK or process capability calculations.

Finally, there is a lot of "soapboxing" scattered throughout the text. I could point to numerous examples discussing government, quality control, complacent managers, but here is one example (p 109). "One mistake companies frequently make ... is failing to recognize the strengths of a company being acquired. Learn from the new organization. Don't assume they don't have anything to offer..."

That may be good advice, it may even be true. But it has little, if anything at all, to do with LEAN. Indeed, if were were to follow the tenets of LEAN, we would strike this whole section from the text as a form of waste.

In summary, I would say the book is great if you work for a company that has or is starting a LEAN implementation, and you want to at least know what everyone is talking about. If you are in anyway involved in the implementation, especially if any statistical control is involved, you will need a much more comprehensive and instructional book.

Great Information...But

This book is a great introduction to Lean processes. However it does not address the wider issues of integration with business systems. Also, there is no mention about the difficulty many Lean implementations have faced and the failures that have resulted thereof.
