Stubborn and Determined Women

Abby and Moraih's father had left them with their Aunt Emma. He would send money home for them. But the girls still worked. Moraih worked for her aunt in the dress shop. Abby worked in a bank.

That's were she met Albert. They were engagded to be married. But one day Abby found out that Albert was embezzling money from the bank. She gave him two weeks to return the money or she would turn him in. Someone else also found out and turned him in. Albert was arrested, he implied that Abby was his accomplice. They never found any evidence that she was involved.

In the meantime, Abby's father died. The girls decided to move to the west and take over the trading post at Fort Lookout.

When they arrive, they find that the trading post is nothing like the store their father had in St.Louis. They were also confronted by three thugs. Who thought they were going to have their way with Abby and Moraih. But Colonel Bryce McGregor intervene's. He throws the three in jail. Then tried to send Abby and Moraih back to St.Louis. The two are determined to stay and make things work. They had nothing else.

The Colonel agrees to let them stay in his extra bedroom. That is until the trading post is ready. While staying at Bryce's home, Abby falls in love with Bryce and his dauhter Pamela. But Abby has vowed that she would never let another man into her life. Especially after Albert.

Can Abby get over her past, to become Bryce's wife and Pamela's mother. Or will the embezzlement issue in St.Louis caome back to haunt her.

To many errors

I like reading Greenwood's stories since the reluctant bride. This story is about the colonel from fort lookout in Colorado falling in love with a st. Louis girl come west to escape suspicion on embezzling that she did not commit. Abby is stubborn with a capital S and very independent and finds it hard to trust in men because of her father's deflection and the man she thought she loved lies to her. Together the colonel and Abby try to fight an attraction and a building love while people are trying to kill Abby so that she can't feed the Indians as per the government beef contract.

I gave it a 3 star because there were too many misspelled words, sentences not making sense and using the wrong words such "mere" when it was meant to say "there" to say the least. Having to piece together what the author meant to say detracted from the story. Mr. Greenwood if you are reading this review your editor made a great injustice to this story.

colorfully vivid nineteenth century Americana romance

Under suspicion for embezzlement Abigail Pierce, accompanied by her sister Moriah, flee St. Louis to run their late father's store at Fort Lookout, Colorado. The commander of the army post, Captain Bryce McGregor tries, but fails to persuade the siblings to go home as they do not belong in the rugged unsafe Rocky Mountains even inside the fort. Bryce does convince the women to stay with him until the store can be renovated and made hospitable. His young daughter Pamela serves as a perfect chaperone so Abby and Moriah accept the kind offer.
Pamela adopts Abby as a mother figure and the former St. Louis resident cannot stop her heart from reaching out to the young child. Inadvertently Pamela plays matchmaker as Abby and Bryce fall in love. However, Abigail willingly sacrifices her happiness because she knows the scandal she fled would destroy the man she cherishes as a rising officer cannot afford a dishonored (even if she is innocent) spouse.
There are few if any authors that can provide such well drawn characters including secondary players with a colorfully vivid nineteenth century Americana panorama inside an exciting historical romance than Leigh greenwood can. His latest tale INDEPENDENT BRIDE matches up two honorable individuals in love and encouraged by her sister and his daughter and even to a degree his men, but those same principles stand in their way of happiness. Mr. Greenwood shows that principles are important even if it costs achievement of a personal goal all that within a fabulous post Civil War romance with a deep message.

Highly recommended

The topic of this book is the economic cycle called the long wave or Kondratiev cycle. The Russian economist Kondratiev did not discover these cycles, but he was the first to study them in detail. Long waves may be responsible for various long term trends: the slow down in productivity growth and wages after 1973, the "Reagan revolution", Toynbee's cycles of War and Peace, stock cycles (my focus) and others. This is the reason why people study them. The idea that long waves are major factors in these trends (or that they are even relevant at all) is controversial. Berry's book represents a modern day treatment of this topic.
I bought this book when I was researching the Kondratiev cycle as a possible explanation for stock market cycles (see my book Stock Cycles for more information). Berry presents an excellent overview of the longwaves literature in a single moderately-priced volume, and it is an excellent place to start a serious study of long waves. What I really liked about the book was the strongly empirical flavor where historical inflation and GDP data were smoothed and plotted in various ways that really "bring the cycles out". The focus is on letting the data "tell their own story", which was most refreshing in my opinion.

A compelling examination of the long wave...

Berry examines the factors associated with the long wave (Kondratiev Wave) and its sub-wave cousin the Kuznets Cycle as they affect the growth of city-building and overall economic growth and decline in the U.S. since the beginning of the republic.
According to Berry, the "stagflation peak" of 1981 will eventually give way to a recession/depression trough sometime between 2006-12. Contrary to the otherworldly optimism and manic expectations of Wall Street and the American public at large, Berry expects a deflationary cycle to begin at any time (March 1998), resulting in mass restructuring and dislocation that will require most of the next decade to resolve.
Following the trough around 2010, however, Berry expects the K-Wave and Kuznets cycles to resume their growth period, which is expected to rise into the growth period peak in the early 2030s.
In the context of A. Gary Shilling's "Deflation...", one would be wise to seriously consider reallocating his or her investment portfolio to perpare for a severe decline in stock prices (50% or more by 2002), in order to avoid the serious losses associated with the Kuznets deceleration wave and the collapse portion of the K-Wave. Bonds will be an attractive alternative to stocks following the panic and collapse phase, as interest rates will dramatically fall as will consumer prices throughout the next decade.

Rythms or just another cycles book?

I was disappointed in the shortsightedness of the author. The book only went through cycle analysis. There was no attempt to identify rhythms which can be more than dynamic cycles.

For a while now I have noticed,charted and annotated price/time action of the S&P500. What is evident is very short duplications of time intervals, maybe once, twice or thrice and then a new time interval will emerge. This is not a cycle and not a dynamic cycle. This is a pattern and it has never been documented before to my knowledge.

Just measure time in 50%, 100% & 200 intervals on adjacent price moves or alternating price moves. You will find the market moves 1,2,3,4 steps of the same time and then that time interval disappears as another one replaces it.

The arithmeticians have never been able to figure it out because it appears cyclish in short time spans, but disappears and cannot be accounted for with any equation. I was hoping for verification of what I see visually on my charts when I map it out. I guess the human mind is still more powerful at recognizing patterns than any computer mathematical algorithm.

The author makes no analysis of the Gann multi-year time spans that reoccur with an exactness to the day at times, but exhibit no cycle tenancies. 1998-2002 = 4yrs : 2002-2007 = 5yrs : 1987-2002 = 15yrs : 1987-2007 = 20yrs :

About the Author

An accomplished author, engineer, and educator, Richard blanco has published several volumes of acclaimed poetry. He is a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, a recipient of several honorary doctorates, and a dynamic speaker supporting diversity, marriage equality, immigration, poetry in education, cultural exchange, and other important issues of our day. Currently, he shares his time between Boston and Bethel, Maine.

A Terrific Read

"Made in Cuba, assembled in Spain, imported to the USA" is how Blanco describes his story in shorthand. So, you would expect his memoir to be filled with stories and reflections that are completely unique to him. And, he has done just that - in a brilliant, engaging and, at times, hilarious way. However, he's also written a story that speaks to anyone who has tried to find their place in the world and within their own family. His descriptions of family members are both vivid and yet somehow familiar, regardless of your ethnic heritage. Blanco's stories will have you unexpectedly thinking about your own family, as well as the tales and trials that make up your personal story. In my case, his abuelita and my nana could have been sisters - perhaps because of the DNA that is commonly found in tough, immigrant grandmothers. In his "For All of Us, One Day: An Inaugural Poet's Journey", Blanco provided a glimpse into his journey that left me wanting to experience more of the journey. "The Prince of los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood" more than satisfies that craving.

A Truly Outstanding Memoir

It is impportant when you read this memoir that you read what Richard Blanco says at the beginning because what he does is define memoir which is not the same as an autobiography. In other words, this poet turned memoirist makes clear that he, at times, fictionalizes but only for the purpose of enhancing what he is writing about. You will, I think, be trapped within the first few pages when you meet his Cuban-born abuela (grandmother) who is a character you want staying in the pages, not living next door! I love how Mr. Blanco is able to reach back into his past, especially with this abuela, and find the kernels that make her an important component of his childhood including her homophobic rants and what, today, we would all recognize as child abuse. But she brought with her, as did the rest of his family, the ways of some Cubans. Because I live in South Beach and interact every day with Cubans, mostly those who were born here, of course, I especially liked this memoir because it is salted with information (and espanol as well) that I have experienced. Like his wonderful poetry, this is a wonderful memoir.

Intimate, Honest, and Wonderfully Told Stories.

Told with loads of warmth, and humor, Richard Blanco recounts growing up in Miami with his Cuban family, as he grapples with hisidentity as an American, a Cuban, and a gay man. As much as I enjoyed the first half of the book, it was the latter part that I found the most affecting and moving. But all of it reads as if your best friend is recounting fantastic rich stories from their childhood.

the unofficial guide to togaf

My biggest problem with the official study guide for TOGAF that it only appears to be available in PDF format. I like to scribble in a book as a study. For only $20, this book comes printed. Kevin Lindy's book also has the advantages of being shorter and having more practice questions. Good news all around.

Some of the questions in Kevin's book are harder than the real exam questions. Especially "which 5 of the following 8 are true" type questions. But they were good for reinforcing knowledge and looking for keywords in the answers.

I found a couple of questions with suspect errors so I'm giving four stars instead of five. But it was still worth it. I found it significantly easier to learn from Kevin's book than then official study guide. It was a great investment of $20.

Helped me pass the part1 Foundation Exam.

I have to attribute a fair amount of my success in passing the Part 1 Foundation exam to this book. It went into just enough detail to give a good understanding of the terminology, vocabulary and concepts/ideas/objectives of the key parts of TOGAF and the ADM. Many of the chapter end questions were of the 'Which of the following 3, 4, etc are part of the..." . Most of the mock exams on the internet seem to focus on the 'Which is NOT a part of ...." I think, together - this book, in combination with other internet sources for mock exams can equip you with enough confidence to get through the 'memorization' oriented Part 1 exam.

Great Option for Level 1 cert

I did the class but it left a few missing pieces, so I used this to augment the information and to provide a double check. It was great - very clear on topics that were muddy in the class and had a good subset of the information.
