About the Author
Tony Abbott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived in a small house on top of a hill. There were tons of books in every room (because both of his parents were teachers) and he would say that these books were his first introduction to the world of literature.

He has been a bookseller, a publisher, and a library clerk, but it was only when he began reading bedtime stories to his daughters that the spark of writing finally turned to children's books. Since then, Tony has authored over 85 books for younger readers. He is currently a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the Yale Center for British Art, and the Creative Writing MFA faculty at Lesley University. He presents writing workshops and seminars to children and adults nationwide. He lives in Trumbull, Connecticut with his wife, two daughters, and a pretty good dog. Great beginning looking forward to more.

This book is the first in one of two new series out this year by Tony Abbott. Like everything else I have read by him it is a great read. Though this one is aimed at a younger audience than many of his other books I have read, he does a great job of writing for that audience and creating a story and characters young readers will love and hopefully get many more stories about.

The Goofballs are Jeff Bunter, Brian Rooney, Kelly Smitts and Mara Lubin, and they have garnered a fair bit of fame in the town after solving the case of the Pizza Disaster. Now they get a mysterious call by a Randall Crandall summoning them for a new case to one of the richest neighborhoods in town. They soon find out things are not always as they appear or in this case, as they sound over the phone. But there is a case and the Goofballs are on it. Can they find the missing Thunder? Not Bad

Tony Abbott has written a lot of beginning chapter books for the Gr. 1-3 age range but this is the first time I have got around to reading any of his work. The first book in the Goofballs mystery series is just what one expects from a well-written piece in this genre. I enjoyed the characters, story and humour. This is a fun group of kids who have a unique detective agency, different from the usual. The first book in a series like this usually is about how everyone meets and how they got started detecting. I really like how Abbott dumps us right into the middle of these kids' lives. They've already solved a case, are famous in their town, are wanting another case to work on and get that call when we first meet them, an established group with a past. The only thing that bothered me was a bit of behaviour which was rather risky: going to meet a strange man way out in the boondocks. Now mom does come along but I'm thinking this is not a good idea even if mom should happen to have a taser in her pocket. But she doesn't and she then decides to stay in the car and let the kids go in the huge mansion in the middle of nowhere all by themselves. Not exactly a swift move for mom, but otherwise an entertaining mystery for this age group.

Doesn't flow very well

My 7 year old son really enjoyed this (and the next 2) ... I hated it and wished I hadn't bought it! It just doesn't flow well, there was nothing funny in it for an adult (which I guess doesn't matter but it's extremely dull to read a book you are not into). I realised with all the books I wasn't even listening to what I was reading as I just didn't find it at all engaging. My son did though, he kept up with the story and enjoyed it.

I would recommend it more for kids that can read themselves, they might like it. But give it a miss if you have to read it to your kids!

The book represents the finished product of ten years of work. To investigate it's worth it has been tested on different groups of students. Students were asked to read certain sections/chapters and to put their hands up if they experienced difficulties in understanding the material. No hands were raised! When the students had completed a section they were asked to answer the questions at the end of that section. This is the true acid test for any book. The results - approximately 92% of students answered the questions correctly while the other 8% made small/silly mistakes. This book "does what it says on the tin" i.e. it teaches statistics. Irrespective of your college discipline, be it business, economics, engineering, science, medicine, psychology etc. this book is a must for a student studying a first/intermediate course in statistics.

This book is brilliant! I did a module in statistics last semester but failed it. My lecturer is average/good but I have to admit that I’m poor at understanding statistics. My parents bought me this book in desperation. I told them not to bother as I haven’t a chance of passing the repeat exam. To my utter shock I could understand everything. The book is laid out in very simple steps which makes it very easy to follow. After 10 minutes of reading I couldn’t believe that I could understood some statistics. Chapters 8 and 9 were simple and my exam is based mainly on these chapters. Bring on the exam, I’m good to go now.

I found this book very easy to follow and understand. I covered a lot of material in a very short time and all the course material from my lectures is covered in this book. I only wish the author would consider writing more books to explain the other modules on my course as well :)

This was fiyah, Ace had a team of true soilders holding him down and they had a crew of ladies who was down for there men. No questions asked, that dam Aaliyah was the epick woman. She had me sitting on the front row of the big screen. Amir was the true definitions of a BOSS, a MAN and a FATHER. Like he said all he has is his word and he kept ut at every turn. Loved this whole series. Sunshine gave being a mother a whole new outlook with her actions, selfish is an under statement for her character. Sad but true many woman act as she did, everyday. Adam all i can say is, jealousy is the devil. He wanted to be his brother so bad but he wasnt cut out to walk a mile in Ace shoes bfore he would be ready to tuck his tail and crawl in a hole. Jvion, no commen, gma always said if you cant say nothing nice say nothing at all and my words are R RATED when it comes to him and Parker. Yeah for those picky readers, who act like they havent ever made a mistake. Enjoy mine and Get over yourselves, l mean really every book can't be perfect as long as you enjoy the story and know what the author is trying to say thats all that matters. Jazmyne this was my first series by you, I asure you it want be my last. You did a very good job, characters were well developed, the story came together nicely you keep shining I see great things in your future between the pages of your books.

Very interesting, highly unusual!

Cured is a remarkable book about quite incredible science....and a pretty good story to boot. Natalia Holt has done some very good research here. One of the things, perhaps the most interesting, that she's found is that the best work, the most creative, most daring, most cutting edge work on HIV (and a host of other diseases, too) is not being done by the big corporations, the big pharma companies.
Just the opposite is at work, the innovative research is being done mostly by small biotech companies, such as Sangamo Biotech, in Richmond, California. They are using something called ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease. As I understand it there were some small villages in Europe where over many years, whenever the Black Plague or similar terrible things struck, killing off millions of people, the people from these small towns were spared, they didn't get sick.
Something in their makeup was protecting them, and over the years scientists studied these people in these villages, looking for what it was that made them different, that protected them. One of the things they found was a small finger-shaped growth on blood cells, one that was high in zinc, and thus the name ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease's. Sangamo has been working on refining this ZFN technique for a couple of decades now, and suddenly they're starting to make it work! Quite exciting stuff really, that could indeed change modern medicine.
Cured should be read more....it's a fine book, clearly written; difficult science explained in a clean, clear easy to understand way. An important book, highly recommended!

Great Book for science students or anyone who is interested

This is actually my first amazon review, this book is so good that I decided to write my first (I am only 1/3 into the book). As a science student, I am able to understand most of what Dr. Holt is talking about. She presented the history and anecdotes in a casual story-telling manner. For layman who has no background knowledge in biology, she added illustrations and tried to use analogy to explain the biological mechanism.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the history and science of HIV/AIDS.

Kudos for Dr. Holt

This book is so well written that I felt compelled to read it in 48 hours.
The book is clear and concise, and perfectly understandable to the layman.
I have been reading on this topic daily and this is the first I heard of the "berlin patient", cured by early intervention.
Nathalia brings each patient to life and shows how hard this disease makes their lives.
Hats off to all the scientists and doctors mentioned.

Good, but the First Book had more Life

It's a good book, but the last book in the series was better. You don't get much of a feel for the personality of the main character in this
one, and for the most part she doesn't contribute much to the plot or final outcome, other than to tell other people what she sees around
her or passing along messages from other people. Of the other characters, Rake is given the most developed personaility. Ian seems
rather bland, and given that the book isn't in his point of view, it's hard to tell what motivates him. We're given a few more hints with
Rake, and it will be interesting to see if the next book explores that. That said, it was a fun read, and the plot was solid.

Enjoying the series

Makenna (Mac) Fraser has been with the SPI as a seer for just under a year. The SPI is a large company founded and run by a dragon that is geared toward keeping humans safe from and learning that supernaturals even exist. And in this world, apparently all the different supes you’ve ever heard of exist. Mac can see beneath glamour and is paired up with a very able human agent who also acts as her bodyguard when out in the field. Other seers in the company had met with unfortunate “accidents.”

Another dragon is in town, not bothering to go through dragon territorial protocol, to lend his group of five diamonds and two well known powerful gems that were created by the elves and goblins, to an expo at the Met. Rumors were flying that he just might sell them, as well as that an attempt would be made to steal them, so Mac and the SPI are on hand hoping to prevent it. But we wouldn’t have a story if the theft didn’t take place, and in such a dramatic manner.

We’re introduced to gorgons and harpies in this second book in the series that involves a great deal of history and world building as the SPI tries to find the missing gems before they are used in less than 24 hours.

The world and character building are really good, although there are times when I could have done without so much information and would have been happy just for the story to continue. But the author does an interesting job of intermingling her world with history. A great deal of tension, especially as we get close to the deadline. And I like that we’re starting to see more development on the secondary characters, and what they’re doing. Many interesting characters covering a number of different species.

Definitely interesting and an enjoyable read.

Fun Book, Solid Interesting Plot but Wonky Character Chemistry

Is it just me or does there seems to be a lot of UF/PRN series out there lately? Some I absolutely fall in love with from Book 1 and others seems to take time to warm to. SPI files has a lot of great ideas and I do like the world but had I not read Lucky Charms SPI 0.5 in an anthology with some other series I really like I probably would be calling it quits after this book. But I’m really hoping for a smidgen more in the overall arcs of the series and if I don’t start seeing it in the next book I’m most likely done because there are a ton of UF/PRN series out there lately.

The Grendel Affair took a really long time to seem to find any forward momentum and at least that was solved in The Dragon Conspiracy. It starts out very interesting when some cursed diamonds linked with the Romanov family and Rasputin are stolen in the middle of a packed art gala. An event that every supernatural baddie seemed to be at so the list of possible suspects is longer than Vivienne Sagadracos’s tail (She’s a Dragon so that is long). Mak and Ian have an extremely limited time to find the stolen loot before it can be used for evil intentions on Halloween.

Lisa Shearin has a better plot and pacing in this story. But it still didn’t have the magic that Lucky Charms brought to the story. But there is enough humor and plot tension to keep it going for the most part.

Grandma said that a skillet’s good for three things: frying chicken, baking corn bread, and going upside an obstinate man’s head.

What it is missing for me is character chemistry. This series can’t seem to make up it’s mind. Are Mak and Ian flirty or friendly? Is he her bodyguard or partner? Do they have any chemistry or is it totally plutonic? I seriously don’t know and I’m not sure Lisa Shearin does either. If you would have asked me in Lucky Charms I would have said they will have a slow burn romance throughout the series, but right now I’m not sure one minute they seem flirty and the next like casual acquaintances not even partners who spend all their time together. The thing is I feel that way about all the characters in the book. No one has great chemistry together Mak doesn’t have a girlfriend she hangs with sometimes or a confidant in SPI that she tells stories too. The closest thing to a friend seems to be the dragon boss lady and that is a little awkward since you know boss, dragon and so much older than Mak. The two people who had the best chemistry in this book were actually Ian and Rake and they sorta hate each other.

“I don’t trust you.”
“That makes two of us. I don’t trust me, either. I do not take offense, Agent Byrne. Goblins get a lot of practice with distrust. If anyone ever does trust me, I must be doing something very wrong.”

Do I need there to be some romance in the story???…not necessarily, but it really helps me at least. That said at least the plot and action kept the story pretty interesting even if I’m missing some of the other stuff. There is also the different lores involving Harpies, Dragons, Gorgons and Goblins. Who knew goblins were sexy and that pink is the most evil color to a goblin. I do like the lore change ups for the most part so far, they have been pretty imaginative.

Mak is also not your typical UF/PNR heroine. She isn’t a badass able to kill things with a single bound. No she can see past illusions and it makes her useful but not the usual skill set of the lead in these. She doesn’t have any magic powers or a tragic past even. Still sometimes her insertion of southern etiquette while probably meant to make her endearing to the reader seems a little forced.

The most interesting character in this book was Rake. He is a little walk on the wild side for sure. I’m all for cheering on the anti-hero and Rake seems to fit the bill but even he is changed. In Lucky Charms he was practically the bad guy and now he seems more like Mak’s own personal brand of kryptonite that is trying to use seduction to win her to his side.

So overall Fun Book, solid interesting plot but wonky character chemistry. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but I could totally set it down and walk away without withdrawals as well. So far this is a take it or leave it series for me.
