Amazon.com Review
The definitive book about soccer. With a new foreword for the American edition. There may be no cultural practice more global than soccer. Rites of birth and marriage are infinitely diverse, but the rules of soccer are universal. No world religion can match its geographical scope. The single greatest simultaneous human collective experience is the World Cup final. In this extraordinary tour de force, David Goldblatt tells the full story of soccer's rise from chaotic folk ritual to the world's most popular sport-now poised to fully establish itself in the USA. Already celebrated internationally, The Ball Is Round illuminates soccer's role in the political and social histories of modern societies, but never loses sight of the beauty, joy, and excitement of the game itself.

Questions for David Goldblatt

Amazon.com: There's a sentence in the middle of The Ball Is Round that to me sums up a great deal of the culture of football. After noting that Pelé had scored nearly a goal a game in over 1,300 professional matches--the sort of stat that would be on every page in a history of one of the major American sports but that is very rare in this one--you write, "This of course tells us nothing about all the goals he made." What stories do football fans tell about their sport and their stars?

Goldblatt: Well, in America not only would you be banging on about Pele's goal to game ratio but you would have been collecting statistics in a rational organized manner about his assists--a concept that had only entered soccer statistics in the last few years. The state of Brazilian football statistics during Pelé's career would not pass muster in Cooperstown in can tell you. Bill James would have a nervous breakdown with hopeless state of the data base. Soccer fans tell a lot the same stories that Americans tell themselves, sagas, epics, heroic tasks, near misses, dramatic comebacks, tales of curious individualists and unshakeable teams, but they are told in a the idioms, genres, vocabulary, and head space of hundreds of different cultures.

Amazon.com: I have to ask the inevitable question: why hasn't football--rather, soccer--ever taken hold in the United States (despite generations now who grow up playing it)? (And does the rest of the world care if it ever does?) I was fascinated by your comment in the American foreword that you recovered from finishing the book by ignoring soccer for half a year and only watching American sports. What did you notice?

Goldblatt: Contrary to the received wisdom I would say that soccer has taken hold in the US, if we look at participation figures amongst women and the young, and while MLS isn't about to challenge the premiership or Serie A for money or glamour it looks like it is now established on a firm footing. If the game can just tap into the rising Latino communities of America it could be pushing hockey for fourth sport.

That said it would still be just number 4. Baseball, football, and basketball have now had over a century's head start on soccer and between them created a wider sports culture--of expectations, tastes, and pleasures--that I think sometimes finds soccer incomprehensible ( what's with the draws?) or distasteful (all that diving). Soccer had its chance in the USA in the 1920s and 30s when East Coast professional leagues were drawing big crowds but a combination of bureaucratic infighting, the Wall Street crash, and the lingering ethnic associations of the game killed it for two generations.

My time with American sports, which I should add is far from over, wasn't planned. After the 2006 World Cup I just couldn't watch any more soccer and there was an awfully big space in my brain where that used to go on. Moneyball by Michael Lewis came into the void and that took me to Jules Tygiel and the great tradition of baseball histories, Ken Burns's long documentary which enchanted me (watched the whole thing in two days) and by the time I had read Roger Angell and stopped laughing, discovered Jackie Robinson, DiMaggio's Streak, and the Shot Heard Round the World it was time to subscribe to NASN and watch the last two months of the 2006 season. If you like the places where culture, society, sport, and history intersect then you're going to like baseball. I'm still working on hockey, in fact I'm still working on seeing the puck, and I'm trying hard to understand football--but I'm finding the helmets, amongst other things, a problem.

What did I notice? Where do I begin? After barely thinking about the United States for three and half years the whole modern history of America opened up before me. That's a work in progress.

Amazon.com: It's hard to underestimate the density and breadth of knowledge that went into this book: politics, culture, and of course football, across the entire football-playing world (which is to say, the entire world). How did you research your vast topic?

Goldblatt: The Ball Is Round was, in retrospect, 20 years in the making. I had wanted to write a world history since I knew that such things existed. In a former life I spent a long time working on globalization and global history and then I made a global atlas of football, so I had plenty of background.

After that, I followed Phillip Pullman's advice, "Read like a butterfly, write like a bee." I read a lot, followed my nose and other's advice, scoured journals, libraries and old magazines, studied web sites, visited museums, stadia, and shrines, made contacts in a lot of countries, and begged, bought, and traded information and opinion--oh and I watched an awful lot of football.

There were trips to Scotland, Sweden, Serbia, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, Tunisia, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina not to mention a lot of old games on video and DVD.

How did I write it? Fast.

Amazon.com: There is nearly as much politics in your history as football--among Argentines, for instance, Peron has nearly as many index entries as Maradona. Why did you not want to write a history only of the players and the games? What relationship do you see between football and politics?

Goldblatt: How could anyone write a history of just players and games and be true to the meaning of soccer? Milan Kundera defended the role of the literary critic by arguing "Without the meditative background that is criticism, works become isolated gestures, historical accidents, soon forgotten." I would say the same of same of social history and sport. All sports trade on their histories, but tend to offer us at best the anodyne accounts of their own development and meanings at worst they are scurrilous cover-ups and concocted myth. Sport and its audience deserve better.

The relationship between football and politics takes many forms--it has been entwined with every conceivable political ideology and movement, every geographical unit and social division, and it has served authoritarian and democratic visions. In the end, football will take on and express the politics determined by our collective choices and struggles, the point for me is to remember that one has choices; to some extent we get the soccer we deserve.

Amazon.com: Has modern football become too big for itself, between the tycoons and the multinationals, the giant audiences and transfer fees, the corruption and the endless media coverage? Is there still space for the game?

Goldblatt: I went to see Manchester United last year in the Champions league--a 70th birthday present for my Mancunian father-in-law--and here at the epicenter of the global branding revolution and the foreign takeover and the rest of it I was privileged to see Carlos Tevez take the game by the scruff of the neck and force 21 players and 70,000 people to track his every move--electric.

Come to Bristol, England's most underperforming soccer city (half a million people, two clubs, no titles) and tell me there's no space for the game. No one is going to Bristol Rovers to be part of giant audience or a world shaped by tycoons and multinationals. But go they do, and to Bristol City too, teetering on the edge of the premiership and there I find a game that makes me laugh--soccer does pantomime and farce here--but surprises, thrills, and reminds me as part of a living crowd the one thing that writing a world history really drives home--"we are all just a drop in the ocean."

Amazon.com: And lastly: who's your favorite for Euro 2008?

Goldblatt: It feels really open--so I'm going with an outsider (like Greece at 2004)--Croatia.

Review
"Football conquered the world with its capacity to astonish, and this is its definitive history." --The Independent

"Since it became a worldwide phenomenon, nobody has attempted to write an overall history of the game. Now David Goldblatt's stunning book will be the measure against which all other such volumes are judged." --The Guardian

"Goldblatt writes with authority, humor, and passion, not least in the accounts of famous or significant matches scattered throughout the book... there is no doubting the worth of David Goldblatt's extraordinary book." --Times Literary Supplement (London)

"Goldblatt's magnum opus, at close to a thousand pages, is an ambitious project realized in a most impressive manner. Anyone with a brain and an interest in football will enjoy this book: just don't drop it on your foot." --The Daily Telegraph (London)

"Just possibly the most erudite football book ever, yet also a very good read. Goldblatt doesn't just understand the social context of the game around the world; he also has a nose for the best stories. This book is a mindboggling achievement." --Simon Kuper, author of Soccer Against the Enemy

About the Author
Among many other things, David Goldblatt is the author of The Games: A Global History of the Olympics, and the writer and compiler of Dorling Kindersley's World Football Yearbook. Born in London in 1965, he now lives in Bristol, England.

A survey of global soccer, without any focus
By Igor Faynshteyn
I write this review having read roughly half of this book. But that is enough to write a meaningful review of it for the prospective reader.

To begin with, I really anticipated reading this book, as someone who has been a fan of soccer most of my life, albeit in an on and off fashion. I also appreciate long and in depth books, as this one appeared to be. However, I am so far somewhat disappointed in it.

The book is a survey of soccer, from its inception as an organized sport, its working class roots in England, to its evolution in Latin America and modern European leagues. This breadth is also what the book ultimately suffers from. It attempts to weave the different strands of sociology, economics, politics, and culture together in one coherent narrative; but it fails, because the weight collapses on itself.

It's a very difficult task to find a focus in a book of this breadth. It's more challenging still to find a sociological, economic or cultural thesis that could be backed up by solid research and data. Thus, the result is a meandering narrative, without any focus or overarching theory about anything. The author does touch on certain sociological and political issues and aspects, like the working class roots of soccer in England; soccer in Latin America under dictatorships; and tactical differences between countries and continents as a reflection of culture and politics. The disappointment is that there is no in depth treatment of any of these topics, and the result is that the presentation of these issues is nothing more than a set of cobbled, albeit interesting, observations. In sum, this book is ultimately a survey of soccer country by country, continent by continent, era by era.

The prose of the book is readable, but nothing amazing. Often times I found myself re-reading passages due to the lack of clarity; at other times I felt bored and ended up skimming sections because of the dryness of the topics and/or prose.

All in all, this book had a lot of potential and probably would have been better written and more interesting if its breadth was reduced, and its length truncated. However, if you are new to the sport, and looking to learn the basics of the global history of soccer, this book may be for you.

A Most Ambitious Opus
By Ronn Berrol
This book is not for the weak hearted. It is a very good and detailed book, but it is such an ambitious colossus that reading it requires great persistence and dedication. It is difficult to just call this a book about soccer. I would argue that it is a book about the world history and sociology of the 20th Century, with football as its central focal theme. Admittedly the book begins in the 19th Century and the first hundred pages of this massive work does not read as easily as when we get towards the 1910's, but the main focus is how football and the world developed and changed together, often with similar parallel forces egging the other on. The book illustrates the spread of Football and how unique factors led to it becoming the sport of the world.

The author provides many examples of totalitarian regimes using football as a political tool. He explores how the Fascists exploited football for political gain and how South American military regimes used football as well to promote their own political agenda. At one point late in the book the author makes the link between certain governments use of Football as a tool for "Bread and Circus", much as was done in ancient Rome to control the masses. I felt he made a compelling case for how local populations often were able to keep their own nationalistic hopes alive under oppressive regimes such as Franco in Spain via their allegiance to local football teams. In other cases, such as the Serbs and Croatians in the ex-Yugoslavia he shows this latent kindling of nationalistic expression and how it led to the rapid organization of Nationalistic causes in the war in Bosnia in the 1990's.

The book also looks at how economic development in local economies can often anticipate both the rise and fall of football achievement in many countries. I was impressed by his discussions of how football time and again is used as an outlet for the political expression for disillusioned youth in many countries as well. In the book we look at the evolution of hooliganism and how "Ultra" groups developed and are funded. The use of drugs and doping in sports is not neglected in this book, but to my eye it's largesse and significance is a bit underplayed. However the spread of corruption in Football is never ignored or dignified.

I enjoyed how the author linked the late development of a strong international football display on the world soccer stage in Japan and Korea to societal customs and traditional hierarchies within their societies. The author expertly explores the role of how television and specifically cable Television has influenced the growth of the sport.

The book is not just a book about the sociology of the world however. There is plenty of football to be had, strategy, world cup history and plenty of Champions league, etc to be explored. If you are a Football fanatic (which I must admit I am not), I can't imagine not reading this book.

Good read
By Stephen
I bought this book a couple years ago when I first started getting into soccer after moving to Europe. I'll admit that, for someone only just getting into the sport, it can be a little bit tedious at times, especially the more modern sections. In general though, it's a great book. I especially found the chapters on the early history of the sport to be incredibly interesting. Another rewarding aspect is realizing how little even your die-hard sports fanatic friends know about the history of a sport they profess to love so deeply! Next time they get on your back for misunderstanding a technical rule, just throw a few questions from this book at them to put them back in their place!

A unique perspective on consumer behaviour
By A Customer
The book is unique in that Marieke K Mooij uses theories from cultural anthroplogy and interpersonal communication to present a framework for consumer behaviour. It is particularly useful for practioners who are working in underresearched markets and are looking for ways to explain why consumers behave the way they do. The book makes extensive use of Hofstede's 5-D model to locate members of different cultures along the dimensions of culture and then uses this to explain differences in buying behaviour, communication styles and advertising appeals. The conclusion of the book is that individual behaviour is shaped more by the culture they belong to than it is by income or other differentiators. The one limitation of the book is that most of the examples are European, but I would recommend it even for those interested in Asian markets

no book is as useful for students and practitioners of adv.
By A Customer
This book review is on a 'titre personnel" basis.
I enjoyed the international advertising course which Marieke gave at Universidad de Navarra in 1997. As a teacher she is very capable of communicating the importance and urgency of this diverse and complex subject: managing marketing communications and brands within the outer/ and inner spheres of market cultures. Marieke applies the 5 dimensional model of G.Hofstede to illustrate and diferentiate a clear and full colour image of cultures and values. Being dutch myself, I recognise both the theory of Hofstede, but also the paradoxes Marieke has found. Intrigueing phenomena such as Japanese business success and collectivism, such as status and success in feminine cultures etc etc are often raising eyebrows, and not seldomly at highbrow corporate levels.
Cultural understanding, I have learnt, is possible only after understanding one's own culture, and a commitment to learn about the other culture, not matching it with your own. Marieke does this very well, she places anecdotes and case-studies is an objective setting, viewing it with an uncoloured microscope. She has added theory, academic research and good practice to make this book complete.
This book, for me, is one of the few great books on international (intercultural) marketing communications (and brand management).

Kindle
By Elena de Affonseca
The book itself is fine. The problem I'm facing is navigating through the pages, especially skipping to different chapters. MOST of the time, the book freezes, does not respond, and I am forced to close out and reopen it. Once reopened, it takes three to four tries to go to the chapter that I wish to read. When I access this on my laptop, it's a little easier to navigate, but it's still a bit annoying to not be able to scroll normally, only page by page, and it's slow loading.
In normal books, this usually isn't a problem because you read it all the way through once. For a college textbook, since flipping back and forth throughout the book is crucial, it becomes a problem. I am studying online at a university in the US from Brazil in order to be with my father through some difficult times this semester. This means the eTextbook is my lifeline. I don't have access to physical books, and I don't have other students who could help me the way they could in a traditional classroom setting. So far, I have been able to get by studying for the exams, but the added pressure of not knowing if my book will open doesn't help!
Compared to the other eTextbook I have on Chegg, this is not a good layout.

Provides Excellent Exercises!
By Kenneth Candelas
This book provides several, actually many different kinds of exercises to improve your knowledge of music theory. It comes with a little pamphlet of a keyboard for beginners who don't know the piano too well as well as difficult exercises for more experienced musicians. Obviously, this book is geared towards beginners more, but it has helped me understand my music theory fundamentals. Highly recommended!

Amazingly answered my questions though some details traumatized me a little
By fb4321
I came across this book accidentally at a time when I was greatly troubled about the plight of women throughout history, including in the Old Testament. I wanted to seek answers. Whereas there are books that address suffering and confusing situations, I think the strength, clarity and effectiveness of this one come through how it was presented as a first-person testimony, not just a theological treatise based on logical reasoning, and how the author really emerged victorious, healed and joyful in the end. She takes us with her through her journey and her family's, such as what they were thinking during the incident, immediately afterwards, and later on. She also included testimonies from her own family members and husband and how they wrestled with questions, thoughts and decisions. The writing style of all of them interestingly enables readers to see the struggle and victories as if you were in their shoes through their vivid descriptions and personal introspection. I was blessed by the faith of this family who clearly know and believed God's Word as they wove truths and promises through their accounts. Most importantly, they shed light to God's work in, with, and through them as they went through this very difficult situation. I am only giving four stars, however, because I am not sure if some parts of the detailed account of the evil event were necessary; I have to admit, it traumatized me a little. Some readers who pick up this book because they are already distraught with the idea of rape but who have not gone through that experience may feel quite overwhelmed with that part of narration. So just a heads up. I would say, if you really have a tender spirit, perhaps skip that chapter. (As a note, including might be cultural because having been born in the Philippines, I remember that crime reports are not as veiled and are often descriptive). Overall, this book gave me deep and satisfactory answers to my questions because I cannot deny their testimony. However, it also shattered some feelings of security or a simple perspective of the world and left me with some new inquiries in my walk and faith that would be the next part of my journey. I would say, if you are not ready, perhaps don't read this book yet; however, if you are like me and you really reached that point where you need answers, this book might be a valuable resource for you. Also, like what the author's husband shared, if you are struggling with pornography or sexual thoughts, this account might also help you overcome it as your eyes get opened to the gravity and truth of how evil and terrible darkness is, including rape.

The beauty of God's sovereignty amidst rape
By Sandy Lorraine
If God is truly good, how can He allow a monstrous evil such as rape to happen? Joy Tan-chi Mendoza's story is just that - a young girl raised in a Christian household by parents who are faithfully serving God yet was violently gang-raped at 15. If God is truly powerful, why didn't He stop it? How could God turn a blind eye at something so horrible? Or did He?

"And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose."
Romans 8:28, ESV

This is probably one of the most difficult passages that I find in the Bible yet one of the most comforting as well. How we define good doesn't always parallel God's definition. Goodness to us may mean a work promotion, travel opportunities or perhaps a new car. We do not see calamities, cancer or the death of an infant as inherently good. Yet the Psalmist declares, "It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes." (Psalm 119:71) We were never promised by God a life free from pain or tragedy. Ultimately, for those of us who love the Lord, ALL things work together for good. God is able to redeem even the ugliest of our experiences and turn it into something beautiful because that's who He is. He's a redeemer.

We rest in the comfort of God's sovereignty knowing that His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways. God certainly doesn't owe us any explanations. He doesn't owe it to Job, to Joy, to me or to you. When God spoke to Job, it wasn't to provide him an explanation on why his ten children were killed, or why the Sabeans and Chaldeans murdered his servants and stole his livestock, or why he was suffering from a painful skin disease. Instead, God so very eloquently delivers a speech on His fearsome creatures, the wild beasts, the storehouses of the snow, the chains of Pleiades and the cords of Orion, and so on.

The point is, we know very little about God's splendid creation. If God can run this entire universe, if He knows the minute intricacies of it, then we can surely trust that He knows what He's doing when he allows us to go through suffering.

The tragedy that happened to Joy and her family many years ago is still being used by God to minister to those who have undergone similar circumstances. Who are we to say that God cannot bestow a crown of beauty instead of ashes for those among us who grieve? He did it for Joy and her life is a testament to God's goodness amidst rape.

Violence did not end Joy's story. It didn't define her. The bigger, overarching lesson is that God is greater than our suffering. In His infinite wisdom, He can use our pain in ways we would never imagine. All for His glory and His alone, because He deserves it.

God centered
By Liz Andrade
The flow of the book is an easy read and it feels like reading a friend’s letter. That’s why it feels so emotional. I could not help my tears well up.

I like how it starts with the book of Job, where the hedge of protection was lifted. I have read the book of Job many times, Joy Tan-Chi Mendoza’s life story helped me to understand what it means. God is sovereign.

I think any reader can tell immediately that God is in the center of this book. There's a sense of peace and calm on how the book was written. How marvelous it is to know that God can restore any person who went through such trial.

Part if this book is also a picture of a beautiful love story between Joy and her husband Edric. I think single ladies will really appreciate this part because it gives hope. Only God can paint such a wonderful picture!

I particularly liked the words written by her parents Pastor Peter and Deonna (that really brought eyes to tears). They gave good a godly perspective on the issue.

I also like the chapter about Hope! Just because I think I really needed to read that chapter. God is the God of hope no matter what. I also shared this book with the ladies in my small group!

Islam in Indonesia: The Contest for Society, Ideas and Values, by Carool Kersten

Indonesia's Muslims are still pondering the role of religion in public life. Although the religious violence marring the transition towards democratic reform has ebbed, the Muslim community has polarised into reactionary and progressive camps with increasingly antagonistic views on the place of Islam in society. Debates over the underlying principles of democratisation have further heated up after a fatwa issued by conservative religious scholars condemned secularism, pluralism and liberalism as un-Islamic.

With a hesitant government dominated by Indonesia's eternal political elites failing to take a clear stance, supporters of the decision are pursuing their Islamisation agendas with renewed vigour, displaying growing intolerance towards other religions and what they consider deviant Muslim minorities. Extremist and radical exponents of this Islamist bloc receive more international media coverage and scholarly attention than their progressive opponents who are defiantly challenging this reactionary trend. Calling for a true transformation of Indonesian society based on democratic principles and respect for human rights, they insist that this depends on secularisation, religious toleration, and freethinking.

Conceived as a contemporary history of ideas, this book aims to tell the story of these open- minded intellectuals and activists in the world's largest Muslim country.

Review

"Ideas matter deeply in contemporary Muslim politics. Their urgency and richness are particularly compelling in Indonesia, which is in the throes of one of the most hopeful if contested political transitions in the contemporary Muslim world. In this timely and well-written book, Carool Kersten provides an intellectual history of the ideas and debates among rival Muslim thinkers vying for influence in Indonesia's unfinished democratic transition. His account of debates over secularism, pluralism, liberalism, and Islamic law is without peer, and shows a keen understanding of the relevance of these ideas for political and ethical reform elsewhere in the Muslim world. This superb book should be read by anyone interested in the ideas at stake in Indonesia and the varied contests animating modern Muslim politics everywhere." -- Robert W. Hefner, Director, Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs, and author of Civil Islam: Muslims and Democratization in Indonesia

Review
Book Review Offshore Wind Power Edited by: John Twidell and Gaetano Gaudiosi This book, on a very timely and interesting subject, presents a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art of offshore wind power systems. As noted in the text, the European dominance in offshore wind farms is expected to continue in the future, with most manufacturing being in Europe. This early lead implies that European exports and expertise also become significant. In this light, European offshore wind energy experts have written the book s thirteen chapters from universities, research laboratories, and industry. Each chapter contributes to the overall theme of solving the technical problems facing offshore wind energy by combining the technologies of wind engineering and ocean/offshore engineering in a unified approach. As shown below, the thirteen chapters are analytically based and each chapter generally contains a significant number of important references on their particular subject: Offshore wind power: A review of progress Basics of wind turbines Wind & waves in the Mediterranean Sea Climatology Electrical aspects of wind turbines Wind farm power connection Grid Integration Turbine dynamics and fatigue Offshore floating turbines Access to wind farms Standards and Certification Foundation design in deep waters Turbine materials Each separate chapter gives an introduction to its subject and should serve as an ideal starting point for an individual desiring to quickly learn the basics of a particular technical area in offshore wind energy. The book is well edited, each of the chapters is well written and well illustrated, and, as previously mentioned, each of the chapters generally contains a large number of references. Although this book does not include all the important aspects of offshore wind energy (e.g., environmental aspects, siting and permitting) it certainly does present a comprehensive review of the majority of the most important technical subjects of this technology. In addition to reference and information uses for researchers and practitioners from the offshore wind industry, it is the reviewer s opinion that this book will serve as a supporting text for various full time or short courses on offshore wind engineering or general renewable/ocean energy courses. This is an excellent book, arriving at just the right time. --Wind Engineering Vol 34 No 1 2010 p123

About the Author

John Twidellis a former professor of renewable energy at de Montfort University and a former board memberof both the British Wind Energy Association and the UK Solar Energy Society. Gaetano Gaudiosi is a European Commission expert for the evaluation of wind-power proposals and a chairman for the triennial European seminar Offshore Wind Energy in the Mediterranean and European Seas.

I Am Zlatan: My Story On and Off the Field, by Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Daring, flashy, innovative, volatile—no matter what they call him, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of soccer’s brightest stars. A top-scoring striker and captain of the Swedish national team, he has dominated the world’s most storied teams, including Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. But his life wasn’t always so charmed.

Born to Balkan immigrants who divorced when he was a toddler, Zlatan learned self-reliance from his rough-and-tumble neighborhood. While his father, a Bosnian Muslim, drank to forget the war back home, his mother’s household was engulfed in chaos. Soccer was Zlatan’s release. Mixing in street moves and trick plays, Zlatan was a wild talent who rode to practice on stolen bikes and relished showing up the rich kids—opponents and teammates alike. Goal by astonishing goal, the brash young outsider grew into an unlikely prodigy and, by his early twenties, an international phenomenon.

Told as only the man himself could tell it, featuring stories of friendships and feuds with the biggest names in the sport, I Am Zlatan is a wrenching, uproarious, and ultimately redemptive tale for underdogs everywhere.

Praise for I Am Zlatan

“Terrific . . . Far more insightful than your typical jock memoir, Ibra’s book tells his story of growing up as the son of immigrants in Sweden and pulls no punches when it comes to his opinions of some of the biggest names in the game.”—Sports Illustrated

“The most compelling autobiography ever to appear under a footballer’s name.”—The Guardian

“The story of Zlatan—from his days as an immigrant kid juggling a soccer ball so he won’t get bullied to his emergence as the genius player who scored the greatest goal ever—is as compelling and fancy-footed as his game.”—Aleksandar Hemon, National Book Award finalist and author of The Lazarus Project

“I love this book. I love it because it’s so much bigger than soccer.I Am Zlatanis a story of hope and grit and what an immigrant kid who comes from nothing can accomplish with hard work and belief in himself. It’s also a beautiful window into our new, more open, more diverse world.”—Marcus Samuelsson, bestselling author ofYes, Chef

“Probably the bestselling European immigrant’s tale since Zadie Smith’sWhite Teeth. . . Once you get past the obligatory snigger prompted by the phrase ‘footballer’s autobiography,’ you can see that Zlatan’s book strangely resembles an earlier immigrant’s tale:Portnoy’s Complaint.”—FinancialTimes

“He is skillful. He is outspoken. He is Zlatan.”—The New York Times

“The best sports autobiography in years.”—PolicyMic

Pep Guardiola, the Barcelona manager, with his gray suits and brooding expressions, came up to me, looking a little self-conscious.

I thought he was all right in those days, not exactly another Mourinho or Capello, but an okay guy. This was long before we started to do battle with each other. It was the autumn of 2009, and I was living my boyhood dream. I was playing with the best team in the world and had been welcomed by seventy thousand people at Camp Nou. I was walking on air—well, maybe not completely. There was a certain amount of nonsense in the papers. That I was a bad boy and all that: that I was difficult to manage. Even so, I was there. Helena, my partner, and our sons liked it. We had a nice house in Esplugues de Llobregat, and I was ready. What could possibly go wrong?

“Listen,” Guardiola said. “Here at Bara, we keep our feet on the ground.”

“Sure,” I said. “Fine!”

“So we don’t turn up to training sessions in Ferraris or Porsches.”

I nodded, didn’t go ballistic on him and say things like What the hell business is it of yours what cars I drive? At the same time, though, I was thinking, What does he want? What kind of message is he sending here? Believe me, I don’t need to make a big deal of looking tough anymore and drive up in some flash car and park it on the pavement or something. That’s not what it’s about. I do love cars. They’re my passion, and I could sense something else behind what he was saying. It was like, Don’t think you’re anybody special!

I’d already gotten the impression that Barcelona was a little like school, or some sort of institution. The players were cool—nothing wrong with them—and Maxwell was there, my old friend from Ajax and Inter. To be honest, though, none of the guys acted like superstars, which was strange. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, the whole gang—they were like schoolboys. The best soccer players in the world stood there with their heads bowed, and I didn’t understand any of it. It was ridiculous. If the coaches in Italy say, “Jump,” the stars will look at them and go, What are they nuts? Why should we jump?

Here everyone did as they were told. I didn’t fit in, not at all. I thought, Just enjoy the opportunity. Don’t confirm their prejudices. So I started to adapt and blend in. I became way too nice. It was crazy.

Mino Raiola, my agent and good friend, said to me, “What’s up with you, Zlatan? I don’t recognize you.”

Nobody recognized me—none of my friends, no one at all. I started to feel down, and here you have to know that, ever since my days at Malm FF, I’ve had the same philosophy: I do things my way. I don’t give a damn what people think, and I’ve never enjoyed being around uptight people. I like guys who go through red lights, if you know what I mean. Now, though, I wasn’t saying what I wanted to say.

I said what I thought people wanted me to say. It was completely messed up. I drove the club’s Audi and stood there and nodded my head the way I did when I was at school, or rather the way I should have done when I was at school. I hardly even yelled at my teammates anymore. I was boring. Zlatan was no longer Zlatan, and the last time that had happened was when I went to school at the ritzy Borgarskolan, where I saw girls in Ralph Lauren sweaters for the first time and nearly shit in my pants when I tried to ask them out. Even so, I started the season off brilliantly. I scored one goal after another. We won the UEFA Super Cup. I was amazing. I dominated on the pitch. Yet I was a different person. Something had happened—nothing serious, not yet, but still. I grew quiet, and that’s dangerous—believe me. I need to be angry to play well. I need to shout and make some noise. Now I was keeping it inside. Maybe it had something to do with the press. I dunno.

I was the second-most-expensive transfer in history, and the papers wrote that I was a problem child and had a flawed character, all the crap you can imagine, and unfortunately I was feeling the pressure of everything—that here at Bara we don’t make a show and stuff, and I guess I wanted to prove that I could do it too. That was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. I was still awesome on the pitch. It just wasn’t as much fun anymore.

I even thought about quitting soccer—not walking out on my contract, though: after all, I’m a professional. But I lost my enthusiasm, and then it was the Christmas break. We headed back to Sweden, to a ski resort up north, and I rented a snowmobile. Whenever life’s at a standstill I need some action. I always drive like a maniac. I’ve done 325 km an hour in my Porsche Turbo and left the cops eating my dust. I’ve done so much crazy stuff I don’t even want to think about it, and now in the mountains I was ripping it up on my snowmobile. I got frostbite and had the time of my life.

Finally an adrenaline rush! The old Zlatan was back, and I thought, Why should I stick it out? I’ve got money in the bank. I don’t need to slave away with that idiot of a manager. I could just have fun instead, and look after my family. It was a great time. It didn’t last long, though. When we returned to Spain, disaster hit—not right away, it was more like it crept up, but it was hanging in the air.

There was a massive blizzard. It was as if the Spaniards had never seen snow before, and in the hills where we lived there were cars stranded all over the place. Mino, that fat idiot—that wonderful, fat idiot, I should say, just to prevent any misunderstanding—was shivering like a dog in his street shoes and his summer jacket, and convinced me to take the Audi. That turned into a complete and utter shambles. We lost control on a downhill slope and crashed into a concrete wall, wrecking the car’s entire right axle.

A lot of guys on the team had crashed their cars in the storm, but nobody did it quite as massively as I did. I won the crashing-your-car tournament, and we all had a good laugh about that, and I was still actually myself once in a while. I still felt pretty good. Then Messi started saying things. Lionel Messi is awesome. He’s totally amazing. I don’t know him all that well. We’re very different people. He joined Bara when he was thirteen years old. He’s been brought up in that culture and doesn’t have a problem with that school crap. Within the team, the play centers on him, which is entirely natural—he’s brilliant. But now I was there, and I was scoring more goals than him. He went up to Guardiola and told him, “I don’t want to be on the right wing anymore. I want to play in the center.”

I was the striker. Guardiola didn’t give a damn about that, though. He changed the tactical formation. He swapped the 4–3–3 for a 4–5–1 with me at the front and Messi right behind me, and I ended up in the shadows. The balls passed through Messi, and I didn’t get to play my game. On the pitch I’ve got to be as free as a bird. I’m the guy who wants to make a difference at every level. Guardiola sacrificed me. That’s the truth. He locked me in up front. All right, I can understand his dilemma. Messi was the star.

Guardiola had to listen to him. But I mean, come on! I had scored loads of goals at Bara and I’d been pretty awesome as well. He couldn’t change the whole team to suit one guy. I mean, why the hell had he bought me, anyway? Nobody pays that kind of money to strangle me as a player. Guardiola had to take both of us into consideration, and, of course, the atmosphere among the club’s management grew tense. I was their biggest investment ever, and I wasn’t happy in the new setup. I was too expensive to be left unhappy. Txiki Begiristain, the sports director, insisted that I had to go and speak to the manager:

“Sort it out!”

I didn’t like that. I’m a player who accepts circumstances. “All right, fine, I’ll do it.”

One of my friends told me, “Zlatan, it’s as if Bara had bought a Ferrari and was driving it like a Fiat,” and I thought, Yeah, that’s a good way of looking at it. Guardiola had turned me into a simpler player and a worse player. It’s a loss for the whole team.

So I went over to him. It was on the pitch, during a practice session, and I was careful about one thing. I wasn’t going to get into an argument, and I told him that.

I said, “I don’t want to fight. I don’t want to have a war. I just want to discuss things,” and he nodded.

He might have looked a little scared, so I repeated what I’d said.

“If you think I want to have a fight, I’ll drop it. I just want to have a word.”

“That’s fine. I like to talk to the players.”

“Listen,” I continued, “you’re not making use of my capacity. If it was just a goal-scorer you were after, you should have bought Inzaghi or somebody else. I need space, I need to be free. I can’t just run straight up and down the pitch the whole time. I weigh two hundred pounds. I’m not built for that.”

He mulled it over. He always mulled everything right into the goddamned ground.

“I think you can play like this.”

“No, it’d be better if you put me on the bench. With all due respect, I get where you’re coming from, but you’re sacrificing me in favor of other players. This isn’t working. It’s as if you bought a Ferrari, but you’re driving it like a Fiat.”

He mulled it over a bit more.

“Okay, maybe that was a mistake. This is my problem. I’ll straighten it out.”

I was happy. He was going to straighten it out. I left with a spring in my step, but then came the cold shoulder. He hardly looked at me, and I’m not somebody who gets worked up about that sort of thing, not really, and in spite of my new position, I carried on being brilliant. I scored goals—but not as pretty as the goals I’d scored in Italy. I was too far up front. It wasn’t the same old “Ibracadabra” anymore, but even so . . . Playing against Arsenal in the Champions League over in the new Emirates Stadium, we totally outplayed them. The atmosphere was intense. The first twenty minutes were absolutely unbelievable: I scored 1–0 and 2–0, both beautiful goals again, and I thought, Who cares about Guardiola? I’m just gonna go for it!

Then I was taken out, and then Arsenal came back and made it 1–2 and 2–2, which was bullshit for us, and afterward I had an injured calf muscle. Normally, the managers are worried by something like that. An injured Zlatan is a properly serious thing for any team. But Guardiola was cold as ice. He didn’t say a word, I was out for three weeks, and not once did he come up and ask me, How are you doing, Zlatan? Will you be able to play the next match?

He didn’t even say good morning. Not a single word. He avoided eye contact with me. If I went into a room, he would leave. What’s going on? I thought. Is it something I did? Do I look wrong? Am I talking funny? All these things were buzzing around in my head. I couldn’t sleep.

Amazing.
By Daphne Briggs
This is hands down one of my favorite "autobiographies." I purchased the UK version at Heathrow back in December and could not put the book down. (I tried reading a Messi bio afterwards and it was such a snooze-fest in comparison I still haven't finished it.) I loved the book so much, I purchased the US version to see if there were any noteworthy changes. (There's not and it is definitely worth a second read.) I loved Zlatan's honest, unabashed, attitude towards soccer and life. My only criticism is that this should be available in an audiobook. I would pay good money to hear Zlatan tell the story of Zlatan. I hope Zlatan finishes up his career in the USA so we can get an additional few chapters of in a future version.

Zlatan's Book Reveals Inner Workings of Pro Soccer
By Mike Hicks
This is a good book for those who enjoy soccer and want to learn more about the inner workings of the professional soccer systems. While Zlatan tells us plenty about himself, he also tells us about coaches, relocations, contract negotiations, and what it's like to join a new team. He does a fine job proving that if one can stay true to one's self and work hard, success is sure to follow. Very good motivational book. I wish I had purchased this for my son when he was 10 and about to start playing soccer.

Language is a bit rough for young kids, but I would have let my son read at 10-12.

... soccer and took it first to make sure it's good for him
By RM
I got this book for my 7 year old son who loves soccer and took it first to make sure it's good for him, unfortunately it wasn't for such a jung boy. The book is awesome and highly recommend it but for a little older people.
