In championing radical ideas such as individual liberty and an empirical appraisal of the universe through rational inquiry and natural experience, Enlightenment philosophers in Europe and America planted the seeds for modern liberalism, cultural humanism, science and technology, and laissez-faire capitalism. This volume brings together the era's classic works, with more than a hundred selections from a broad range of sources - including works by Kant, Diderot, Voltaire, Newton, Rousseau, Locke, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine - that demonstrate the pervasive impact of Enlightenment views on philosophy and epistemology as well as on political, social, and economic institutions. Included are seminal discourses on science and religion, on the social contract, on the equality (and inequality) of the sexes and the races, and on economics and markets, as well as homages to nature and sexual pleasure, and poetry and opera librettos that embody the movement's social ideals.

About the Author
Isaac Kramnick was born in 1938 and educated at Harvard University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1965, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, Yale and Cornell, where he is now Professor of Government. He is married to Miriam Brody Kramnick and lives in Ithaca, New York. Among his publications are Bolingbroke and His Circle, The Rage of Edmund Burke and numerous articles on eighteenth century topics. He has edited William Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and, with Michael Foot, The Thomas Paine Reader for the Penguin Classics. Most recently he is the author, with Barry Sheerman, MP, of Laski: A Lift on the Left.

Dry,..but readable

Okay, what can I say about this book. It’s a challenge reading the writings of the Enlightenment. They tend to be somewhat superannuated. Part of this is because being children of the Enlightenment we tend to take their principles and premises for granted; they are woven into the fabric of our Western consciousness and part of our intellectual heritage. To align yourself with Enlightenment thought several centuries ago was a risky business. It took a certain bravery to publish these works. Today, Enlightenment thought continues to inform our sensibilities and to shape our thoughts. And although the gale force winds of the Enlightenment have today subsided into near imperceptible breezes, they once shook kingdoms and thrones, and caused miters and scepters to tremble.
Most of the men who wrote and contributed to Enlightenment were what was called, ‘natural philosophers’. These men would lay the foundation for what is today modern science and its myriad of associated disciplines,...Biology, Physics, Epistemology, etc.
Now I have to say that as much as I acknowledge the value of these historical antecedents to modern thought I find the writings themselves to be somewhat dry, pedantic, desiccated and jejune. And frankly, some, just out and out boring.
The one writer whom I found to be an exception is Voltaire. Voltaire’s wit, wisdom, and satire can still make you smile and laugh. A restorative and welcome tonic in contrast to much of the Enlightenment writing.

Anthology of Brilliant Minds

Perhaps the best of the "Portable" series by Viking-Penguin. The book covers the Enlightenment period from approximately 1650 through 1800, and is superbly edited by Isaac Kramnick. Covering such luminaries as Voltaire, Kant, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Jefferson, Pope, Montesquieu, Franklin, Paine, Bentham, Adam Smith and a score of lesser known philosophers and writers; the book hits on major elements of the era - religion, politics, liberty, race, gender and slavery - among others.

Within these 700 or so pages, the book provides the reader with an introduction to the Enlightenment and does so in such a way that there's an appreciation as to the role of this unique era in the foundation of our modern society. The selection of readings were both famous and obscure, but the reader is not left feeling that they didn't get a fair shake at the real elements of the philosophy that fueled the American and French revolutions, led to the establishment of the modern Western democracy, and continues to serve as a foundation of modern political and ethical thought.

If there is one book for every student to read before they leave high school, or certainly college, it is this one. A must read.

Many historical anthologies focus upon a single theme and thus fail to provide their readers with an adequate range of sources. Yet Isaac Kramnick's Enlightenment Reader avoids this pitfall. This book will introduce you to the key texts of the period - in addition to many delightful works of which you may never have heard.

Readers looking for pure philosophy will not be disappointed: the anthology contains a fine selection of excerpts from Bacon, Descartes, Leibnitz, Newton, Hume, Kant, and others. But the Enlightenment embodied more than abstract speculation, and Kramnick skillfully arranges sections on science, religion, art, morality, education, history, politics, economics, crime, war, gender, and race.

Each topic draws upon a diverse array of authors. This gives the reader a sense of the popularity of Enlightenment thought, as well as its development from the middle of the seventeenth century to the start of the nineteenth. Intellectual giants like Voltaire, Rousseau, and Locke appear alongside a gallery of lesser-known but fascinating figures: Nicolas de Condorcet, mathematician and revolutionary terrorist; William Godwin, anarchist and lover of Mary Wollstonecraft; Olympe de Gouges, early feminist playwright; John Cleland, author of the scandalous Fanny Hill - a vital source for the study of eighteenth-century sexuality, and still hilarious after 270 years.

Any collection as ambitious as Kramnick's is bound to have a few faults. The most glaring omission is George Berkeley, whose philosophy of radical skepticism makes no appearance. A few texts from writers outside of the Enlightenment tradition - I'm thinking of Goethe, Herder, and the Marquis de Sade - would have rounded out the reader's sense of the diversity of eighteenth-century thought. That said, I know Penguin has commissioned another volume in this series, on Romanticism, so I expect that some of these 'Counter-Enlightenment' authors will feature in the coming volume.

These are all petty quibbles. If you are looking for a fresh and thorough introduction to the Western Enlightenment, Isaac Kramnick's Enlightenment Reader is the ideal place to start. This compendium brings to life one of the most important periods in the history of Europe and its colonies: you will find that the great men and women of the eighteenth century were just that - men and women - and yet no less great for their humanity. I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and I am confident that you will feel the same.

Throw away every other sales book you've ever read.

"People don't buy things for your reasons. They buy things for their reasons, and if you want to sell them something, you have to find out what their reasons are and work with them." That's a paraphrase, but it's what I remember from reading No Bull Selling at least 15 years ago. What Hank Trisler wrote then is still universally true. It's a simple toolbox full of useful ideas. He ignores the hocus-pocus and quasi-spirituality that makes so much sales literature nauseating. An extraordinary book that makes only modest claims, but lives up to all of them.

People buy for their reasons, not ours

No Bull Selling offers practical sales advice with a sense of humor. Hank Trisler writes, "I've been going to sales seminars all my adult life. That's how I got so misinformed."

Listening

"People buy for their reasons, not ours, so we have to diagnose before we can prescribe... Feedback lets us be a heat-seeking missile. Wherever the target goes, we can follow."

"Selling is communicating. In the process of effective communication, it is far more important to understand than to be understood." Trisler says that one of the biggest mistakes a salesperson can make is "talking about things that don't interest the customer."

"I'm going to propose to you the 80-20 rule of selling... the customer talks 80 percent of the time and we talk 20 percent. When we talk, we ask questions to cause the customer to talk more... In selling, the pay is far greater for asking the right questions than for knowing the right answers. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care about them... One of the finest, and shortest, nondirective probes I have ever heard is 'Oh?'"

Objections

"Objections don't get in the way of the sales process; they are a part of the sales process... An objection merely means that the customer is sharing with us a problem, as he sees it." If you argue, you will put the prospect in a defensive position. "The way to deal with objections is to flow with them." To illustrate, Trisler recalls a visit to a Mercedes dealership. "I've been trying to justify the price of a 450SL. They sure cost a lot of money." The dealer replied, "Yeah, they do cost a lot of money, don't they?"

Prospecting

"Prospecting, in my opinion, is well over half the game in selling."

"I believe that the easiest, fastest, most pleasant, and most profitable method of prospecting is getting referrals from our spheres of influence." Trisler categorized his customers as A, B, or C. "An A will send you business, if he remembers you. So never forget an A, and never let an A forget you."

The book includes a Sales Activity Calculator worksheet. This not only determines how many contacts are needed per day in order to meet the sales objective, it puts a dollar value on those contacts. Start with your average earnings per sale. Divide by the average number of presentations per sale. Then divide by the average number of contacts needed to make a presentation. "'You mean I make $9 every time I hand out a card, whether or not they buy?' You got it. Could this realization make prospecting more fun? Every time we contact another warm body, we make money. The amount of money depends on our personal averages... Manage activity, not results."

"I'm going to suggest you sit down before every sales call and make a list of objectives, in descending order of importance." For example: Make a sale; Make another appointment; Get more information about the customer and his problem; Get referrals; Leave an atmosphere conducive to future dialogue. "Now, honestly... can't we get at least one of them? This means that we'll never again 'lose' on a sale; just some days we'll win bigger than others.... It shields our fragile egos from the reality of failure."

Nonverbal Communication

Trisler cites research by Dr. Albert Mehrabian who found that people form opinions based on the following factors:
* 7% verbal (the words we use)
* 38% vocal (how we sound when we say what we say)
* 55% nonverbal (how we look when we say what we say)

"Fifty-five percent of your impact on people is visual... A fine rule is to dress like the people your customers go to for advice... This may make word selection seem unimportant. But let's look at selling today. The competition is tough, so I don't want to be at even a 7 percent disadvantage."

Hank Trisler died in July of 2012 at the age of 75.
