A Well-Written Documentary

I read this book for two reasons. First is due to my love for anime and manga and the desire to further my knowledge for this cultural phenomenon. The second is because I'm planning on minoring in East Asian Studies, and I thought this book would give me insight as to the comparative politics concerning manga in both hemispheres of the world.
This book has done so, and more. "Adult Manga..." explains, in a well organized and detailed manner, the history of manga, from it's downfall in the 60's to its revival in the 80's. Other aspects about this book that I found very interesting were the attitudes expressed in both the western and eastern cultures. Ms. Kinsella goes on to discuss how manga has made it's place in the status-quo of the Asian region in the world, while at the same time, is struggling to makes itself known in mainstream pop-culture in America.
After I finished this book, I was enthralled by how much I was able to learn, while at the same time, I was also upset about how ignorant I was to ignore some of the most important aspects about manga concerning Japanese society. To paraphrase, manga is, more or less, a direct correllation to the social and cultural trends in Japan. How much of that statement can encompass is left to the reader.
If you think manga was just about big-breasted women, sophisticated mecha-warriors and cute furry animals, think again.

Not the first and not the best...

Disingenuously claiming to be "the first detailed analysis of the post-war pop-cultural phenomenon of Japanese adult manga in English", (presumably Anne Allison and Frederik Schodt weren't detailed enough, and Groensteen's L'Univers des Mangas was too French) Sharon Kinsella's Adult Manga throws nuggets of interesting information across sweeping fields of missed opportunities. For a study of the relationship between author and editor, it is an ironically incoherent subbing job, with repeated text, entertainingly random italics and idiotic use of English titles (Tezuka's well-known "Atom Boy", as well as an anime called "Megalopolis" and another one called "Doomed"...). Kinsella also seems to only translate titles on a haphazard basis; some are in Japanese with English translations, and some are not. The Japanese bits, especially about life inside the giant publisher Kodansha, are informative, but she makes so many mistakes talking about the English industry that one can only hope she's not cocking up elsewhere. The best bits are the few sections that consist of "What I did during my paid holiday at Kodansha's offices", although she does not seem to have marshalled the information she amasses. She notes that artists have many assistants, for example, and notes the educational value of photo-real draughtsmanship, but doesn't seem to have realised that one is related to the other, and that using the real world as a baseline is a good way of matching disparate art styles in a busy studio. Bottom line is her book will give you the chance to get gossip and quotes from several interesting Japanese sources, which you otherwise wouldn't have seen. But considering the two-year delay from its original intended publication, I would have hoped for something a little more up to date; some of Kinsella's conclusions were already dated in 1995, and are showing their age now.

The view from a manga publisher

Kinsella's book presents her view of the Japanese manga industry, as colored by her experiences inside it for a few months on a research grant from Kodansha (Japan's largest publisher). While there is much of value here, she is simply misled, mistaken, or wrong in so many other areas it is difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. For example, contrary to her assertations, very few manga are group efforts written by committee. And while it's true some editors provide plotting assistance to the creators and some are even uncredited co-writers, many are reduced to banging on the door of the artist's apartment hoping some pages will be poked out of the mail slot when the deadline comes around. Her analysis of the international manga translation industry seems to have been written without the benefit of any real research into same. Bottom line--if you know the biz well enough to separate fecal matter from boot polish, some great tidbits here. If not...don't believe everything you read.

A Great Foundation for Learning Bayesian Statistics

For people who need a primer in Statistics, especially Bayesian Statistics, I'd recommend this book.

When you are finished with this book, you can apply basic Bayesian methods for common case scenarios involving Normal distributions and Binomial distributions. Pragmatic scenarios for understanding how to interpret the results and understand when your prior may be inappropriate for your data were quite welcome and missing or underrepresented in other books and seminars I've taken in Bayesian statistics.

I especially appreciated the discussions on how to perform hypothesis tests in a Bayesian framework that is rare to find.

Bolstad does an excellent job in showing the relationship between Bayesian and Frequentist methods but, in my opinion, doesn't do enough exclamation points in the cases where he shows that they mathematically converge.

What is especially GOOD about this book is the fact that it DOESN'T get into the heavy mathematical underpinnings, history, and rationale for Frequentist vs Bayesian approaches. I have taken several seminars and read several books which focus on this approach of introducing rigorous mathematical formalism and integration using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) was left somewhat bewildered by it. The PhD's who worked with me and tried to explain why Bayesian methods were better utterly failed because they overemphasized the high-falutin' mathematical rigor In fact, I would go so far as to say that the university professors and statisticians who emphasize these techniques are actually holding back the advancement and use of Bayesian methods by the general practicioners because of this. The average person doing statistics is going to do it by rote (whether we like it or not) so providing accessible methods to people who can do this is the way to further the cause.

Bolstad's book is a great foundation because it doesn't try to be comprehensive and mathematically rigorous book. It focuses on providing just enough mathematical underpinnings to understand the basic concepts and make progress without dwelling on it.

It would be great if Bolstad's book were used in high schools or in freshman college and university courses to introduce statistics. We'd convert more people to Bayesian methods if we did.

Intro to Bayesian Bolstad

This is an outstanding introduction for anyone with a modest knowledge of algebra. It includes some of the clearest expositions of fundamental statistical concepts and then extends and re-interprets those concepts in a way that makes Bayesian logic natural and intuitive. Excellent problems to solve illustrating and solidifying the concepts of each chapter. First rate reading!

There was so much great information regarding email marketing

There was so much great information regarding email marketing. I have been interested in getting started but being a person who is not technically inclined I was concerned that I would not be able to to it well. This book give you lots of great tips on funnels and how to build you subscriber lists by making sure you are targeting you market so that you don't lose what you gain. And with anything sometimes the first time you try it may not work so just keep at it. Looking forward to using the strategies outlined here to help me grow my own email subscribers!

With an introduction by the much honored Straub (Ghost Story), this collection can be dubbed New Wave horror, considering that most of its 24 stories were published fairly recently and it includes contributions by celebrity horror writers. The tales mostly eschew buckets of blood, instead employing mood and suggestion in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe. "Little Red's Tango," Straub's lengthy quasigospel of a record-collecting obsessive, complete with beatitudes and a seductive demon, ably represents the editor's definition of New Wave horror. All the stories honor Poe, like the moody, contagious delusions of Stephen King's "The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet." The genre can be literary, as exemplified by Tia V. Travis's vengeful "The Kiss," Thomas Tessier's surprising "In Praise of Folly," and, probably the most demonstrably Poe-like, Ramsey Campbell's "The Voice of the Beach," featuring a neurasthenic narrator, suffocating suggestibility, and nearly palpable imagery. Brian Evenson's creepy "Body" and Dan Chaon's touching "The Bees" culminate in the horror of bad deeds catching up. The other stories included are without exception excellent. A great horror collection

Poe's Children: The New Horror, an Anthology edited by Peter Straub is a terrific collection of short stories by a varied collection of authors. Straub includes one of his own stories, Little Red's Tango, a story that is sure to grab the reader's attention. I have to admit that I had a little difficulty getting into the rhythm of the story, but once I did I found Little Red's Tango to be truly worthwhile. Also included is a great story by Stephen King, The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, another story dealing with an author who is convinced that his typewriter is possessed. I think this is King at is "short story" best.

I was also pleased to see that Neil Gaiman was included with his October in the Chair. Here's a list of all the stories included in Poe's Children:

I suspect that like many readers, I have just a wee bit of difficulty reading when the story/author changes. Authors write with their own cadence. It always takes me a page or two to get in step, but other than that, I look forward to new anthologies, especially in the horror genre.

The best story in the collection, in my opinion only has to be October in the Chair by Gaiman, followed closely by Cleopatra's Brimstone. Picking these over the others is really pretty arbitrary since all of the stories are grabbers.

All things considered, Poe's Children is a unique collection by a diverse group of authors.

What is horror, anyway

In which Peter Straub sets out to broaden the umbrella of “horror” beyond the stereotypical blood-and-guts sensationalism typically associated with it. He succeeds at this so well that I had a hard time figuring out exactly what made some of these stories fit into the genre at all.

Dan Chaon - “The Bees” - A husband and father is haunted (literally or metaphorically?) by the first wife and child he abandoned during his drinking days. Impressively dark and downtrodden, although one wishes the two wives were sketched out a bit more actively. 3.5/5

Elizabeth Hand - “Cleopatra Brimstone” - The second time I’ve realized after starting a story that I had read it before in Redshift and promptly forgotten about it. This story follows a beautiful young entomologist who travels to England after surviving a sexual assault, at which point she proceeds to pick men up at bars and clubs and turn them into butterflies by having sex with them. I guess there’s something to be said here about a woman reasserting her sexual agency, but weird stories about transgressive sexuality are just not my thing. Also Hand devotes huge chunks of time to talking about raves and clubs. 1/5

Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem - “The Man on the Ceiling” - I enjoyed the conceit of this one - Melanie and Steve, a married couple, take turns metafictionally (?) relaying the effect that Melanie’s lifelong terror/hallucination of a ghostly presence has on their life together, but the story kind of fizzles out without doing much of anything with that conceit. 3/5

M. John Harrison - “The Great God Pan” - Decades ago, three college friends took part in some sort of magic ritual which has proceeded to ruin the rest of their lives, despite the fact that none of them can remember what actually happened that night. Like “The Bees,” this is a very dark story, and the reader is also swept into this sort of claustrophobic hopelessness where the characters find themselves as they suffer the consequences of this action that remains entirely obscured throughout. Harrison later expanded this story into the novel The Course of the Heart, which I wouldn’t mind reading. 4.5/5

Ramsey Campbell - “The Voice of the Beach” - My favorite story in here, and also the one most comfortably situated within the weird/horror tradition - highly reminiscent of “The Willows” and itself echoed later in China Mieville’s “Details.” A reclusive man living on the beach has a friend, recently recovered from a nervous breakdown, come and stay with him. They notice odd patterns and details about the beach, find an abandoned village (complete with a seemingly-incoherent fragmentary diary), the friend (and the narrator!) act increasingly oddly, and things unravel quite nicely. 5/5

Brian Evenson - “Body” - Having enjoyed what I’ve read of Evenson’s in the past, this was a big disappointment. A fragmentary and disjointed account of a man imprisoned and tortured by some monks, and then something about women and tearing shoes apart and... ? 1/5

Kelly Link - “Louise’s Ghost” - A story about two lifelong friends, who are both named Louise, no last names given, so the reader is left to differentiate whom is being discussed by their quirky actions. I would expect to hate this, and it did wear awfully thin, but by the end I couldn’t help enjoying this story a good deal nonetheless. One Louise has a daughter, while the other has a ghost. Things get sad. 3/5

Jonathan Carroll - “The Sadness of Detail” - An interesting setup - an angel recruits an artist to recreate images for an increasingly senile God - that ends right after revealing said setup. 2/5

M. Rickert - “Leda” - A modern retelling of the Greek myth of Leda and the swan, no more, no less. 2/5

Thomas Tessier - “In Praise of Folly” - An appreciator of architectural follies travels to a remote town in New York in order to photograph a garden done up generations ago as a mini-Italy by an eccentric industrialist. Up until the climax, nothing seems amiss (aside from a single reference when he arrives in the town), and this means the horrific element (which is well-done, such as it is), is entirely divorced from the narrative leading up to it (also well-done, such as it was). This was probably the author’s intent, but there could have at least been more of a thematic connection. 3/5

On May 19, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay achieved the impossible, becoming the first men to stand on top of Mount Everest. But by May 10, 1996, climbing the 29,000-foot "goddess of the sky" had become almost routine; commercial expeditions now littered Everest's flanks. Accepting an assignment from Outside magazine to investigate whether it was safe for wealthy amateur climbers to tackle the mountain, Krakauer (Into the Wild, LJ 11/15/95) joined an expedition guided by New Zealander Rob Hall. But Krakauer got more than he bargained for when on summit day a blinding snowstorm caught four groups on the mountain's peaks. While Krakauer made it back to camp, eight others died, including Scott Fischer and Hall, two of the world's best mountaineers. Devastated by the disaster, Krakauer has written this compelling and harrowing account (expanded from his Outside article) as a cathartic act, hoping it "might purge Everest from [his] life." But after finishing this raw, emotionally intense book, readers will be haunted, as Krakauer was, by the tragedy. Highly recommended.

Almost twenty years ago, journalist Jon Krakauer joined a guided expedition to the top of Mount Everest, led by accomplished high-altitude climber and guide Rob Hall. Ostensibly on assignment to write a magazine piece on the increasing commercialization of Everest, as outfits like Hall's made it possible for climbers with more disposable income than actual mountaineering experience to have a go at the summit, Krakauer knew this might be his only chance to fulfill his own boyhood dream by standing atop the highest mountain on earth. An enthusiastic climber since childhood - though with no experience whatsoever at very high altitudes - he was one of the most technically proficient clients on Hall's team, and on May 10, 1996, he made it to the summit. On the way back down the mountain, however, Hall's group was one of several expeditions caught up suddenly in a violent snowstorm. Krakauer, farther down the mountain than most of his teammates when the storm hit, made it safely back to the tents before he collapsed in exhaustion. He woke to discover that triumph had given way to terror and tragedy: several guides and clients, including Hall, were still out there in the storm, their bodies becoming increasingly vulnerable to the subzero temperatures as their supplemental oxygen supplies dwindled. "By the time I'd descended to Base Camp," Krakauer reflects in the Introduction, "nine climbers from four expeditions were dead, and three more lives would be lost before the month was out."

"Into Thin Air," written within six months of Krakauer's return from Everest, is the product of his attempts to process exactly what happened up there, how things could go so very wrong and so many very experienced climbers, some of whom had summitted Everest several times before, could have lost their lives: "I thought that writing the book might purge Everest from my life. It hasn't, of course. Moreover, I agree that readers are often poorly served when an author writes as an act of catharsis, as I have done here. But I hoped something would be gained by spilling my soul in the calamity's immediate aftermath, in the roil and torment of the moment. I wanted my account to have a raw, ruthless sort of honesty that seemed in danger of leaching away with the passage of time and the dissipation of anguish." Thanks perhaps to the years spent honing his craft as a writer and his discipline as a journalist with deadlines to meet, Krakauer succeeds brilliantly in what he has set out to do. His account is nowhere rushed, hysterical, or lacking in polish; rather, it's a well-told story, supported by carefully researched background and dozens of interviews with other participants in the events, and Krakauer is so much in control of his narrative that it comes almost as a shock how much of a genuine emotional wallop it packs.

Perhaps only a man who stood on the summit of Everest after years of dreaming, only to regret afterwards that he'd ever gone, could tell this story the way Krakauer does, neither glossing over the dangers of the mountain or the waste of good human lives, nor denying the challenge it poses the human spirit simply by being the highest spot on the earth's surface, simply, in the words of a man who died on Everest decades before, "because it is there." "Into Thin Air" is a thrilling, if sobering, tale of adventure. Let's be honest, reading a book like this is as close as most of us are ever going to get to climbing the great mountain - and Krakauer describes so well the challenges of the terrain, the moments of astonishing beauty, the plodding determination that carries the exhausted body ever onward, the effects of high altitude on the body and mind, that our vicarious ascent in his company is thoroughly satisfying. He brings his fellow climbers alive for us, too, in brief but vivid verbal portraits. We are told not only of their mountaineering prowess, but their determination, their amiability, their families, their human faults and foibles. Even though we've known pretty much all along who dies and who lives (the book is dedicated to the memory of those who died, and a photograph of the mountain between the introduction and first chapter is labeled with a map of their route indicating where major events took place, including several deaths), by the time the storm sweeps in we've come to care about these people, to hope without hope, to mourn their deaths, to celebrate every time a survivor makes it to safety.

Some readers have labeled Krakauer arrogant and accused him of placing blame on everyone but himself, but I didn't find this to be the case. He comes down against the practice of guides leading commercial expeditions of clients without the skills or experience to make the climb without constant hand-holding, but he acknowledges that he himself didn't rightly belong there, and has nothing but praise for the skills of Rob Hall and the other guides he knew personally. He doesn't hesitate to point out errors of judgment that might have facilitated or compounded the perils of the situation, but it's more in the nature of pointing out the fallibility of human nature and the general unreliability of the human brain in a state of hypoxia (which, 8000 meters above sea level, supplemental oxygen can only partially mitigate) than pointing fingers or placing blame. There are no villains (except perhaps Ian Woodall, literally the only one of dozens of people he met on Everest of whom Krakauer had nothing good to say whatsoever, who for no apparent reason denied the use of his radio to help maintain contact with survivors and coordinate rescue attempts), but plenty of heroes: men and women who risked their lives venturing exhausted into a storm to rescue others, who held their own grief at bay to console the dying, who handed over their own precious bottles of oxygen to those in greater need, who calmly coordinated communications and rescue efforts during a time of crisis, or who simply managed to keep breathing when it would have been so much easier and less painful to fall asleep forever in the snow. That some of these fine, heroic men and women made the occasional mistake or bad decision says more about the risky nature of their undertaking than about them as individuals. Krakauer doesn't exempt himself from folly or fallibility, either, and in fact he's far harder on himself than he is on any of the others who were with him on the summit that day, living or dead. And granted that the fortitude, endurance, determination, and self-confidence necessary to tackle Everest tend to come hand-in-hand with a certain swagger and cockiness, Krakauer doesn't come across as particularly arrogant. This is a man who lets his readers see him, in the last chapter, broken by grief and survivor's guilt, lying across a bed naked and high on cannabis, with thick sobs "erupting out of my nose and mouth in a flood of snot."

There's enough controversy surrounding the events on Everest in 1996, and particularly Krakauer's accounting of them, that readers who truly wish to understand what happened on the mountain that sad day probably shouldn't rely on this book alone. Fortunately, a number of other books on the subject exist, including at least four other memoirs by survivors of the disaster. "Into Thin Air," however, remains in any case a good place to start - and a thrilling, if ultimately haunting, read.

Powerful memoir

I chose to read Into Thin Air after watching the movie Everest. I was interested in reading a first-hand account from a survivor's point of view about the tragedy of the 1996 Everest Expedition that befell the Adventure Consultants team. I chose this book because it was written by a journalist and received good ratings, and I was not disappointed. This is a well-written memoir that lays a background for the reader to understand mountain climbing in general and Everest expeditions in particular in order to put the expedition into context.

Jon Krakauer gives what I feel was a very thorough accounting of his experience on that ill-fated expedition, as well as a fair bit of well-researched information on what others that were climbing during that time went through. Particularly powerful is the way he delved into what each phase of the expedition felt like in the moment, and how all of the events and decisions that unfolded affected the ultimate outcome. Certainly he points out his own shortcomings during this excursion as well as those of others; he also heaps praise where it is deserved. In the end you can feel the pain that the author carries with him as a result of this experience, and you can feel the doubt he feels over whether any of it could have turned out differently.

Krakauer's intent in publishing this book is to shed light on the 1996 Everest tragedy, and the many other tragedies that have occurred on this and other mountains. The takeaway is that preparedness is important, as is making the right decisions at the right time, communicating with your team and those around you, and cooperating during times of trouble. But above all that there remains an uncertainty when you take on a risky operation that no amount of careful planning and execution can negate. Into Thin Air will make you stop to think about how your actions have consequences not only for yourself, but for those around you. Perhaps it can even make you pause before endangering or hurting others, and if it does then I think that Krakauer did us a service by writing about his team's experiences on Everest.

"Into Thin Air:" Jon Krakauer's an excellent but controversial book explains the 1996 Everest tragedy.

“Into Thin Air” is Jon Krakauer’s best-selling memoir of the 1996 Mount Everest tragedy. For the most part, I think it is a very well written and engrossing book. It tells the story of Krakauer’s experiences as part of the ill-fated commercial expedition to Mount Everest in May 1996.

At that time, Krakauer was a journalist writing for Outside magazine. His employers had assigned him to write a story about the commercialization of climbing Mount Everest. In order to write his story, Krakauer, who was already an experienced mountaineer, would join the Adventure Consultants team in climbing Everest, and then write about his experiences afterward. (New Zealander Rob Hall, who was widely regarded as the best commercial guide in the business, led Adventure Consultants.)

Krakauer admits writing “Into Thin Air” in order to explain the Everest tragedy from his perspective. He also admits that he was still very emotional about his experiences while he was writing both his 17.000 word article for Outside magazine and his book. In his book’s introduction, he assures readers that he did the best he could to get his facts correct, not just by relying on his memory of events, but by interviewing as many of the expeditions’ other members as possible.

Krakauer writes with great precision and detail when describing the events of May 9-12, 1996. As I read each page, I found myself transported to the Everest base camp, the Khumbu Icefall, the South Col, and into the "Death Zone." I could picture the towering seracs and bottomless crevasses of the icefall, the windswept barrenness of the South Col, and the sun-scalded but frigid summit. As the storm struck with its savage ferocity, I could feel the terror, despair, and gritty determination of each mountaineer still trapped high on storm-ravaged Everest. The deaths of Krakauer’s fellow mountaineers were heartbreaking, and the stories of those who survived were inspiring.

If Krakauer had left his story right there, it would have been an outstanding book about death and survival on Everest. However, Krakauer felt the need to try to explain why the tragedy occurred, and he did so by heaping blame on certain individuals for what happened. He is especially scathing in his criticisms of Mountain Madness guide Anatoli Boukreev and client Sandy Hill Pittman. To his credit, he also severely chastises himself for his own failures to help others when he was called upon to do so.

When I finished “Into Thin Air,” I was left wondering: what was the point of publicly censuring others for their faults, foibles, and ambitions? Mistakes were made, yes; but would those mistakes have cost anyone their lives or their limbs if there had been no storm..? No one will ever know, but I think it is doubtful.

Despite my lingering questions about “Into Thin Air,” I still think it’s an excellent book that tells an important story about the tragedy on Mount Everest. Highly recommended. (4.5 > 5)
