Fast Paced Excellent Novella

A space-opera you can read in a weekend. Generally I'm a full-blown novel fan and the shorter stuff isn't really for me, but M. Pax, with her approximately 13,000 words, changed my mind.

I downloaded it when I wasn't feeling well and by the next day, felt good enough to decide I needed to be reading something. This was it.

Though her main character spends a lot of time in isolation M. Pax does a great job of invoking all five senses in the reader, of drawing you into the world of this lone solider who's main company is ghost-brigades and memories. Her heroine is wonderfully human and it's easy to identify with her fears, sense of determination and struggle to do what's required of her.

Excellent read and certainly just this side of free at .99 on Kindle and other outlets.

A perfect space opera

For a science-fiction novella, this story is well-deserved of five stars. M.Pax convincingly creates a strange world and infuses it with mechanics that seem so real to the person living in it that it can be no less real for us. Of particular interest to me was the second skin or armor that Leda wore. It not only had intelligence but was responsible for her extreme longevity. The only thing that I don't like about the story are the things that are NOT addressed. For example, there is a huge history here that begs to be told. I hope that the author explores it in future tales. If you like your science-fiction as hard as a computer case, you will like this novel. Told in third-person, I thought that it could easily stand a place next to the works of Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Heinlein (though there is no snark in her writing as there is in Heinlein). The vocabulary and sentence structure though is definitely similar in flavor as is the sobering plot.

Intriguing, fast-paced and vivid

Though I'm not normally a sci-fi reader, I wanted to branch out a bit and try something different. My friend sent me M. Pax's Plantgirl (free download at [...]) and loved it so I thought I'd give this a try. I was NOT disappointed! Not only did the author do a great job at creating a vivid, dark and intriguing world, but the plot was compelling and fast-paced. Her heroine's struggles between duty and hope were believable and full of emotion. It was a page-turner! I look forward to reading more from M. Pax.

About the Author
Joel Samaha is University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. He received his B.A. (History), J.D., and Ph.D. (History) from Northwestern University and studied under Sir Geoffrey Elton at Cambridge University, England. Professor Samaha was admitted to the Illinois Bar, briefly practiced law in Chicago, and then taught at UCLA. In 1971, he joined the University of Minnesota, where he served as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies for four years, taught television and radio courses in criminal justice, co-taught a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar in legal and constitutional history, was named College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teacher in 1974, and named University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2007. Professor Samaha's works have appeared in Historical Journal, American Journal of Legal History, Minnesota Law Review, William Mitchell Law Review, and Journal of Social History.

Good Luck

This will sound childish, but the thing I hate about this book is the fact that it does not have any pictures whatsoever. Secondly the information could be trimmed down significantly, but instead it repeats itself on and on and on... and on. If you have to read this book for your college course all I gotta say is good luck.

Really valuable book.

This book is full of fascinating discussions of court rulings that changed American law. Professor Samaha publishes new editions so that he can update the court cases and keep the book current. As a professor, Joel Samaha is extremely down to Earth, and strongly opinionated. I think both characteristics come across in his book, but regardless of whether you share his opinions, this text will help you understand both sides of the arguments and form your own judgements. Even though I had to buy this hardcover new, it was worth the money and I am not selling it.

Typos and political agenda

There were quite a few typos in the book. For the cost of the text, I would have expected better editing. The author's politic agenda and attitude in regard to certain topics is evident in his writing. I feel his one-sided approach to some topics is not conducive to learning in an acedemic setting.

DOES THE BIBLE CONTAIN THE “GENUINE HISTORY” OF THE ANCIENT ISRAELITE NATION?

The authors wrote in the Acknowledgements section of this 2001 book, “Almost eight years ago… the idea for this book was born. The debate about the historical reliability of the Bible was again beginning to attract considerable attention outside scholarly circles and we came to the realization that an updated book on this subject for general readers was needed. In it, we would set out what we believed to be the compelling archaeological and historical evidence for a new understanding of the rise of ancient Israel and the emergence of its sacred historical texts. Over the intervening years, the archaeological battle over the Bible has grown increasingly bitter… Despite the passions aroused by this subject, we believe that a reassessment of finds from earlier excavations and the continuing discoveries by new digs have made it clear that scholars must now approach the problems of biblical origins and ancient Israelite society from a completely new perspective… we will present evidence to bolster that contention and to reconstruct a very different history of ancient Israel.” (Pg. v-vi) [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 385-page hardcover edition.]

They wrote in the Introduction, “Not since ancient times has the world of the Bible been so accessible and so thoroughly explored. Through archaeological excavations we now what crops the Israelites and their neighbors grew, what they ate, how their built their cities, and with whom they traded… Dozens of cities and towns mentioned in the Bible have been identified and uncovered… But that is not to say that archaeology has proved the biblical narrative to be true in all of its details. Far from it: it is now evident that many events of biblical history did not take place in either the particular era or the manner described. Some of the most famous events in the Bible clearly never happened at all.” (Pg. 5) But they point out, “By the end of the twentieth century, archaeology had shown that there were simply too many material correspondences between the finds in Israel and in the entire Near East and the world described by the Bible to suggest that the Bible was late and fanciful priestly literature, written with no historical basis at all. But at the same time there were too many contradictions between archaeological finds and the biblical narratives to suggest that the Bible provided a precise description of what actually occurred.” (Pg. 19-21) They clarify, “But suggesting that the most famous stories of the Bible did not happen as the Bible records them is far from implying that ancient Israel had no genuine history.” (Pg. 23)

They observe, “Indeed, the Bible provided a great deal of specific chronological information that might help… pinpoint exactly when the patriarchs lived… we arrive at a biblical date of around 2100 BCE for Abraham’s original departure for Canaan. Of course, there were some clear problems with accepting this dating for precise historical reconstruction, not the least of which were the extraordinarily long life spans of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob… In addition, the later genealogies that traced Jacob’s descendants were confusing, if not plainly contradictory. Moses and Aaron, for example, were identified as FOURTH-generation descendants of Jacob’s son Levi, while Joshua, a contemporary of Moses and Aaron, was declared to be a TWELFTH generation descendant of Joseph, another of Jacob’s sons. This was hardly a minor discrepancy.” (Pg. 34-35)

They assert, “The conclusion---that the Exodus did not happen at the time and in the manner described in the Bible---seems irrefutable when we examine the evidence at specific sites where the children of Israel were said to have camped for extended periods during their wandering in the desert… and where some archaeological indication---if present---would almost certainly be found.” (Pg. 63) They add, “The saga of Israel’s Exodus from Egypt is neither historical truth nor literary fiction. It is a powerful expression of memory and hope born in a world in the midst of change… To pin this biblical image down to a single date is to betray the story’s deepest meaning. Passover proved to be not a single event but a continuing experience of national resistance against the powers that be.” (Pg. 70-71)

They state, “Only recently has the consensus finally abandoned the conquest story. As for the destruction of Bethel, Lachish, Hazor, and other Canaanite cities, evidence from other parts of the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean suggests that the destroyers were not necessarily Israelites.” (Pg. 83) They add, “If, as archaeology suggests, the sagas of the patriarchs and the Exodus were legends, compiled in later periods, and if there is no convincing evidence of a unified invasion of Canaan under Joshua, what are we to make of the Israelites’ claims for ancient nationhood? … archaeology surprisingly reveals that the people who lived in those villages were indigenous inhabitants of Canaan who only gradually developed an ethnic identity that could be termed Israelite.” (Pg. 98) They summarize, “the Bible’s stirring picture of righteous Israelite judges… has very little to do with what REALLY happened in the hill country of Canaan in the Early Iron Age. Archaeology has revealed that complex social transformations… far more than the later biblical concepts of sin and redemption---[were] the most formative forces in the birth of Israel.” (Pg. 122)

They explain, “many of the archaeological props that once bolstered the historical basis of the David and Solomon narratives have recently been called into question. The actual extent of the Davidic ‘empire’ is hotly debated. Digging in Jerusalem has failed to produce evidence that it was a great city in David or Solomon’s time. And the monuments ascribed to Solomon are now most plausibly connected with other kings. Thus a reconsideration of the evidence has enormous implications. For if there were no patriarchs, no Exodus, no conquest of Canaan---and no prosperous united monarchy under David and Solomon---can we say that early biblical Israel, as described in the Five Books of Moses and the books of Joshua, Judges and Samuel, ever existed at all?” (Pg. 124) They add, “There is hardly a reason to doubt the historicity of David and Solomon. Yet there are plenty of reasons to question the extent and splendor of their realm. If there were no big empire, if there were no monuments, if there was no magnificent capital, what WAS the nature of David’s realm?” (Pg. 142) They suggest, “the evidence reveals a complex demographic transformation in the highlands, in which a unified ethnic consciousness began only slowly to coalesce.” (Pg. 150)

They conclude, “We can never know how reliable were the traditions, texts, or archives used by the biblical authors to compile their history of the kingdom of Israel. Their aims were not to produce an objective history of the northern kingdom but rather to provide a theological explanation for a history that was probably already well known, at least in its broad details.” (Pg. 222)

While some theological conservatives may hate this book, it is an excellent summary of current research, and will be of great interest to students of biblical history and archaeology.

3rd Ed comming in 2015

As previous poster said the new 3rd edition is to be released in 2015. DO NOT GET PRICE GOUGED BY THESE SELLERS!! The new copy will have all color print while this 2nd ed is black and white. Unless this is a must have now wait until Cornell finishes the publication of the 3rd edition.

*UPDATE* - Cornell has dropped the ball again on the publishing date. They now expect to release the new edition in 2016.

Simply Wonderful

The folks at Cornell have done it again. This is a huge book, packed full of information, but it is also a joy to read. Even though it supplies plenty of the "encyclopedic" material, it's a bit reminiscent of David Attenborough's "Life of Birds" DVD, in that it highlight some of the "gee-whiz" aspects of birds, such as egg mimicry, artistic bower construction, lymphatic penises in ducks, and so forth. There was a surprising section on nocturnal birding by ear, which I had never seen addressed. They seem to have covered every topic and then some.

If you have only a casual interest in birds, this book may be overkill, but if you are a birder or ornithology student I'm sure you'll enjoy deepening your appreciation and understanding of birds with the help of this book.

Overpriced out of print, wait for 3rd ed

Just FYI, I have only flipped through this book briefly and do not actually own a copy, though I would very much like to.

However, the current prices offered by third party sellers on this site and others are tremendously inflated. While the book is no longer in print, it was originally sold new by Cornell for $100. Obviously, prices like $300 for a used copy are a bit exorbitant. However, Cornell IS working on a 3rd edition that they will sell, so if you can wait, you will once again be able to purchase this book at a reasonable price sometime in the future.

He was part of Ayn Rand’s study group in the 1950s--along with economist Alan Greenspan. He was a pioneer in laser research. He spent many years developing air-borne laser wind sensors for Lockheed and NASA. He co-founded the Stanford Research Institute remote viewing program--which was funded by the CIA--and was instrumental in tracking Soviet and Chinese weapon installations during the Cold War. And, he is a legally blind motorcyclist—who happens to be a Buddhist.

Rare Authenticity!

I have been a student and a contributor to the field of parapsychology for the last 35 years. And, it is with good authority that I highly recommend all of the books by Russell Targ -- for two simple reasons. First, Russell Targ is a very clear thinker. He expresses his thoughts easily and with great clarity (and wit!). Second, and I believe of even greater importance, Russell Targ is one of the most experienced and successful parapsychology researchers of the last fifty years. He writes from the perspective of an insider's insider. And, I regard all that he has to say to be of great importance to anyone trying to understand this very tricky field.

In addition -- and this is particularly relevant to Do You See What I See? -- Russell, himself, has been on a path of personal transformation. This book is especially lucid in terms of integrating modern, scientific ideas with thought from Hindu and Buddhist teachings.

Because it is autobiographical, this is the most wide-ranging of all of Targ's books. It is also the most personal. For anyone interested in the human story behind the career of a great parapsychology researcher (not to mention laser physicist), this book is a must read.

History of Remote Viewing Revealed (And Much More)

Even though I first met Russell Targ nearly three decades ago, and having been active in the field,there were still things to be learned. This book is full of details that will delight the reader. In addition to the historical perspective of remote viewing, Targ manages to provide a personal perspective about what brought him to the field, the family relationships that give depth, and an understanding of what it all means in a global, even spiritual, context. If you think you've heard it all before; well you haven't.

As the reader learns, Targ is a very complex man, one who has followed a multiplicity of trails. While he is legally blind and a self-confessed "Mr. Magoo,", he really does ride a motorcycle efficiently. Though best known for studying consciousness, he is also a laser physicist. Somewhat surprisingly, those, and many other aspects of his life, are adroitly intertwined in a way that makes sense, but only after the disparate pieces are assembled.

This is the latests of several books he has written. They are clear, concise, and complelling. Do You See What I See? is highly recommended for both consciousness aficionados and those novice-curious.

Reminiscences & Conclusions from a Life Being Well Observed

This Book:

The reference to Zelig in the book's description is apropos, and I was glad to find it wasn't marketing bull manure. There are lots of great stories here from a guy at the top of his game, and really nothing with which you could take issue. Targ's not selling any ideas here that you have to buy; the research and evidence from his career are presented in other publications.

For me, "Do You See What I See?" was a fabulous book with many surprises. Not the least of which were these two, paraphrasing from Targ's writing: 1.) You're not your business card or personal story, and 2.) he believes that our species has evolved as far as it's going to, and now our business is about consciousness. To have seen a man who used to be all about military RV write such a thing is cause for pause and reflection. Although Targ wasn't an enlisted man, the massive organizations for which he worked literally wear their jobs and ranks in full view on their sleeves.

There are also pleasant, personal anecdotes from Targ's earliest life, while he grew-up marinated in the environment of famous authors who worked with his publishing father. He drops thoughtful, funny and surprising one-liners with some regularity. Probably my favorite was, "Indeed, at this stage of my life, I am much more interested in questioning answers, than my previous specialty of answering questions." Having been afflicted with that attitude most of my life, his writing feels like that of a kindred soul.

The style of this book is rambling, through Targ's stream of awareness. Since eidetic memory isn't one of my skills, I'll go back and revisit the sections which spoke to me. This is obviously not a textbook so one shouldn't expect it read like one. There are many sections which I found touching or amusing, especially Chapter 14. If you'd enjoy "sitting by a master" and hearing them hold forth about real life experience, with real mistakes and triumphs, this would be a lovely read for you. Although I do get the feeling Targ would deflect the label "master."

My Introduction to Targ:

What interested me about Russell Targ's work is *who* he is, because that has informed and directed his now legendary work. Targ is one of the men who initiated the remote viewing (RV) programs for the U.S. military. The RV programs eventually led to colorful or dark fictions like those contained in the movies, The Men Who Stare at Goats or Suspect Zero. So this book has been my pleasant introduction to Targ's compendium of personal and professional experience. Happily but unexpectedly, I had found myself on a June Sunday standing next to Targ in a sparsely-populated conference hallway of an organization he co-founded, the International Remote Viewing Association. He and Paul Elder (Eyes of an Angel) were examining and photographing a drawing Paul made of an object Targ uses for RV.

I was interested in asking Targ a question about a project on which I'm working; to my pleasant surprise he invited me to sit with him at lunch. Targ was polite, direct and had droll humor in conversation. He even asked my opinion of one of IRVA's seemingly failed presenters. If you've co-founded the organization at which the presentation takes place, you're allowed that latitude. I hadn't seen the presentation, so I had the good fortune to answer that I couldn't have an opinion about it.

I asked Targ why he got into remote viewing and was simply interested in what intrigues him. In the years I've known one of Targ's beloved friends, Stephan A. Schwartz, I hadn't delved into Targ's now legendary work because I didn't always agree with the uses to which the work was put. So I intended this published bio to be my first look at what Targ thinks about himself and his work.

Dana L. Comstock, Ph.D., is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), and the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW). She has written numerous journal articles and several chapters within edited texts. Her interests involve women's issues and relational approaches to therapy. Dr. Comstock has extensive training in Relational-Cultural theory and has recently completed the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute's practioners program under the supervision of Judith Jordan, Ph.D.

If you are seeking depth in understanding diversity, this is a very preliminary text. It does provide a place to start but if you are looking for one text to provide breadth of knowledge about diversity, keep looking, this isn't it.
