As an asexual and someone who shamelessly enjoys characters in love and characters in dangerous situations (like when, say, a murderer is after one of them) and especially characters who are in love in dangerous situations, I was SO excited to read this book, and I found myself incredibly let down. I'm going to start with the good, which was the dialogue between Malachi and Bran was hilarious. Malachi's wit had me laughing out loud at points, and his back and forth with Bran was natural and amusing. It was a cute book, but I found myself bored and not really wanting to finish the book after the killer was revealed.

The character relationships and family dynamics, while backstories were varied and given only in pieces that didn't make everything immediately known to the reader, were a bit cliched at times. As a reader I shouldn't be able to pick up on the fact that "Bran's head swam" or "Bran's head was swimming" was used often enough to me to say 'hey, this was used really recently... like, two pages ago.'

The sex scenes were excessive and unnecessary and didn't really serve to move the plot of the book forward in any way. It did show certain aspects of Bran and Malachi's developing relationship, but, again, it seemed... excessive. I stopped keeping track of how many there were after I think five.

There are asexuals who do things for the sake of their partners, yes, and there are asexuals who have sex simply for the stimulation and not because they are sexually attracted to anyone, but a conversation about Bran being willing to do things with Malachi despite his sexuality and the fact that he'd never really be interested would've suffied. Or even a singular sex scene showing that development and dynamic of their relationships rather than... however many pages of sex scenes I found myself skimming over, bored because - oh right, I have no desire to have sex. I certainly have no interest in reading about it. Again, it seemed excessive and didn't really seem to serve any sort of purpose for moving the plot of the book (you know, imminent danger, people trying to kill one of the boys) forward.

Other people may have really enjoyed the sex scenes, from what I skimmed they over they weren't terribly written, so if that's the kind of thing you're into, go for it. Overall, personally, I was just... really let down by this book. It was an amusing, quick read, but I won't be downloading the sequel.

I'm so glad I did

Oh my, I just finished reading and I am still smiling. The blurb intrigued me and I thought why not, take a chance. I'm so glad I did. Bran is shy, sweet and asexual. Malachi is short, outgoing and sweet on Bran. They were so cute together and accepting of each other. I loved how Bran grew stronger in who he was and what he wanted, which was Mal. I had never read a story where someone was asexual. I knew the term but not what it meant. This was an adorable story that showed me a little bit about what it's like. Thank you to Michaela Grey for putting this story out there!

Lovely representation of asexuality

When I started the first chapter of this book, I thought I knew exactly where it was going- the characters acted as exposition pieces that gave a lot of information in a short amount of time. However, as you get into the story and get to know the characters, they begin to flesh out, and the exposition dies down so that you can sit back and enjoy the tale.

You start with the likable Bran, an asexual who loves to bake and attends university, and Malachi, another university student who seems to have whatever he wants. The two meet properly, and the love story goes in a pleasantly different direction from what I expected.

This story avoids the tropes of jealousy, of lack of communication, and others that normally make you roll your eyes in romance stories. The characters do fight, yes, but they have reason to, and the communication between those who care about each other was refreshing. The sex scenes are there, but they are brief and easy to skip if you feel the urge to do so. They weren't overly explicit, which was something I appreciated.

I won't go into too much more detail, but this is a nice representation of an asexual character without having their aceness shoved into your face. That said, this is representation of a romantic asexual, so I hope in future works we'll see other variations of aces. I'm hopeful, as the author presented other sexualities in the same casual, matter-of-fact manner that I liked about Bran's orientation.

Trevor Harley completed his undergraduate degree and PhD at the University of Cambridge. He moved to the University of Dundee in 1996 from the University of Warwick. He holds a Personal Chair in Cognitive Psychology and is currently Head of the School of Psychology. He is a Chartered Psychologist and his main research interest is in normal and pathological speech production.

Linguistic junkies...

I had to order this "text book" for my Psycholinguistics course. I never read my textbooks, like most college students, but this one I did. It's language development and linguistic theory for dummies. It's so readable. I highly recommend reading this first, before diving into something heavier, like Chomsky.

Real life explained to children.

Wow, my Wife and I are loving this series of books and our 2yr old LOVES his llama books! We started with "Llama Llama Mad at Momma" because it was helpful in teaching our son how to behave and be helpful in public. We were a little apprehensive about "...Red Pajama" because some of the reviews seemed to indicate that Little Llama was simply being ignored while he was suffering some traumatic event alone in his room. NOT THE CASE! Basically, Little Llama is put to bed and doesn't fall immediately asleep, which is normal. Then Little Llama bored & alone decides he wants Momma and asks for some water, which is normal. Meanwhile, Momma is downstairs washing dishes and dealing with telemarketers, which is very normal. Then Little Llama decides that throwing a tantrum will accomplish his will and works himself into a panic, normal even for well behaved children. When Momma hears his cries she literally drops everything and comes bolting through the door to find her child in his own manufactured state of despair. The book ends with Momma clearly explaining that sometimes Momma is too busy to come right away but it doesn't mean that she isn't on her way or that she doesn't love him. What a great lesson for children! In the real world sometimes mom & dad are busy but trying. Sometimes mommy is on the potty and baby must wait. Sometimes daddy is watching football and... ok just kidding. Anyway, our son enjoys the rhymes and the amazing artwork, and we love that we can use it as a learning tool.

For those who rated this book with one star - I offer this rebuttal. The mother is aware the child would like a drink of water. She was going to finish a task and bring it up when she is interupted by a phone call. Seems like this might happen at my house. Until the child begins to make quite a fuss, she is not aware he is stressed. I will concede the admonishment may be a bit much, but I chose to focus on the comfort given at the end. The lesson being that just because Mom isn't right beside you doesn't mean she isn't close enough to protect you. My 20 month old son loves this book and we discuss why he might be afraid in the dark and if it is a rational fear and how to appropriately deal with those fears. As with any book, this book provides an opportunity to discuss with your child if the behavior of the characters is appropriate and solutions that may work better.

ADDRESSES A COMMON FEAR - WELL DONE LITTLE BOOK.

I certainly liked this one and the kids I read it to, like it too, which is actually a pretty good indorsement for a kids book. This book addresses the common fear so many young children have when their mom leaves the room at night (I had the same fear as the baby Llama when I was that age, years and years ago...some things never change). The story is done if an excellent rhyming fashion (and, no, my mid-west accent/twang does not interfere with the reading one bit) and the illustrations are great and eye catching. Like another reviewer, I love the facial expressions conveyed here. This is an excellent beginning reader and an excellent one to read at bed time with your child. Recommend this one highly.

Grade 4-6-At first glance, these profusely illustrated books appear to be a lighthearted approach to some grim chapters in the history of the world. Chapter titles are often blithe and the cartoon art depicts the gory and abominable treatment of one group of people by another. But closer examination of the texts and pictures reveals informative books, packed full of the facts students often seek. The first title describes the life of a woman from the Black Sea area who is kidnapped and taken to serve as a slave in ancient Greece. The treatment of the slaves by the aristocracy is depicted along with descriptions of everyday life. Gladiator highlights the superiority of the Roman army, which returned its prisoners to Rome where they were trained to be arena fighters. Rules of battle and types of gladiators are described. Mention is also made of the simulated sea battles that took place in the flooded arenas and of staged wild-animal hunts. Mummy covers the process of embalming and mummification along with the symbolic features of an Egyptian burial. Discoveries of tombs and modern beliefs about mummies are also included. While these books cover material included in other titles, their approach to history will be extremely popular with students who relish a bit of blood and guts along with their historical facts.

Fun and informative for grade schoolers

You can tell the difference between someone who has studied history and writes a children's book and someone who hasn't a clue how to find information. Unfortunately, Macdonald doesn't provide a bibliography at all or address where she got her information so I had to take off one star. However, her information seems quite solid and I love the way the book is laid-out with the life journey of one woman into slavery and her experiences there. There are obviously several of the less pleasant things left out of this book such as sexual slavery, but it did contain more reality than I had expected for a book at this level. The sidenotes are great and they actually give you the advice the cover of the book promises. There are also hints for the younger audience that things are not simple, even something they've been taught is an evil, is actually quite varied and complicated by gender, race, age, skill, and personality.

Any woman in history

This is an informational story about you, as a mother, living near the Black Sea in the 5th century B.C. in a Scythian Tribe. You are captured by the Greeks, separated from your family, and sold in Athens. The story gives a detailed description of the typical life of a slave woman in Greece. Some tips for you to remember: "Forget about your family because you will probably never see them again. Work hard if you want your owner to treat you well. Be nice to your owner's eldest son - one day he'll become your master. Improve your cooking, or your owner won't feed you at all. Don't get caught trying to escape - you will be punished or sold." The book has great pictures and a lot of interesting information presented through a story. This book makes it fun to learn about the life of a female slave because it doesn't feel like you're studying! This is a good book to read aloud to primary students and have in the classroom library for students up to the intermediate level.

Fun and funny

This book is a part of the You Wouldn't Want to Be series of children's books, created by Salariya Book Company. Like all of the books in this series, this one has lots of brightly colored illustration and gobs of great, off-beat humor. The book presents life as a slave in Ancient Greece in all its unvarnished degradation. It's the story of a Scythian woman who gets swept up by Greek slavers, and taken into the sad life of a slave. Along the way, the reader learns about slavery, and about daily life in Ancient Greece.

This is a very funny book, one that honestly presents the world of the slavery in the ancient world, but in a fun and funny manner that makes the book a real joy to read. So, if you have an older child or young adult who wants to read a definitely not-dry book on a ancient history, then steer him or her to You Wouldn't Want to Be a Slave in Ancient Greece...they'll thank you later!

You think you know the Warhammer 40,000 universe?Think again

This giant, over sized book is a comprehensive account of the first twenty years of The Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and Navy fight crushing battles against the dread menace of Chaos. This is detailed/narrated by Antonid Biota, a senior tactician on the front line, assigned to the staff of Lord General Van Voytz. Biota has been in the thick of the combat right from the beginning and is able to tell it like it is.

Illustrations abound within the covers and you will find many maps and notes. There are even copies of the Casualty Listings. Pictures, not just illustrations, show the details of the hardware and weapons used by the brave souls that hold Chaos at bay. Confidential orders are spread out for you to read. There are even detailed spreadsheets showing the layers within the Hive cites, such as Sangrel Hive (page 16). Troopers, majors, captains, ranks of all types tell about the battles they faced and the horrors they witnessed. By the end you will feel as though you were there yourself.

All the plans and politics are laid bare for all to see, such as a chart detail showing Cybon's proposed rimward expedition, circa 463, and the trailing zones of the Cabal Systems, showing the border worlds assaulted during Macaroth's initial phase in 770-771 (page 68). The Blood Pact is thoroughly explained, squadron badges are shown, and you even get to see, up close, the ships flown. (The Navy Thunderbolt, Cypra-Mundi Pattern XXI, of the One Hundred and First Pacificus Navy Elite Wing, the 'Apostles' Plane, serial 4548456, flown by Major Dario Quint, "Ace of Aces", is shown on page 82).

Genius at work

Goldhammer's blog, French Politics, represents the best that the internet can offer, intelligence, critical judgment, a vast and eclectic store of knowledge, and a rich sense of humor. Even if you are not fascinated with things French, it is a must visit lieu d'internet, simply for style and intelligence. Given his background as a serious academic, I would not have guessed that the novel would be a comfortable fit for him. But this is a wonderful book. Stylistically creative, internally engaged and directed, it does tricks that a mathematician would appreciate, but its humanism shines through. I am once more in the author's debt, enriched and enlivened.

Novel of Great Sweep and Intelligence

Shooting Wars is a brilliant novel, one that I found deeply engaging on a variety of levels: for starters we get informative analysis and insightful historical fiction that captures and reveals the sexual and political dynamics of the second half of 20th century America as well as any novel I know of. The American Vietnam experiences, both in Southeast Asia and on the home-front, are convincingly rendered, as are dimensions of our electoral politics, the film industry, journalism, academics, high-tech fortunes, the American national character, and class relations . More broadly, we get compelling reflections on universal themes-- the sciences and humanities, love, sex, and, death-- a cornucopia of subjects, woven into an expansive but fully coherent tale.
Shooting Wars is also a novel of great characters, many of whose psychological complexity is matched by their philosophical sophistication. The central character, Alex, has the kind of appeal that Hamlet has: in Alex we are obviously confronted by a tremendous intelligence, whose reality is palpable, who nonetheless eludes simple categorization. His fundamental motivations remain opaque, not because we don't believe he would act as he acts, but because truly complex psychology never has fully transparent motives. I think readers, like Alex himself, will be absorbed in trying to figure out what makes Alex tick. The character of Alex makes the book the kind of existential fiction we associate with Sartre and Camus. Although central, Alex is only one of many intriguing characters. In addition, historical figures, notably LBJ, are brought to life and persuasively interpreted.
A novel of memory and a novel self-consciousness, the book is very well served by its structure, wherein we have characters commenting on their own and others' characters, and representations that represent other representations within the novel. All of this is done in the most natural, unstrained way. Multiple perspectives give us no privileged center, and yet are fabricated into a completely believable world, that holds together without a privileged center.
The book could be read as a compilation of wonderful aphorisms alone; "his vision was clouded by clarity," "the beauty of families: there is no escape so you must cover up," "most things peter out, that is why it is so damn hard to know when maximal effort is required." A small sampling of gems on every page.
The book is a beautifully written, great read, indeed a page turner. But not because it is plot driven, but rather because the reader wants to continue to indulge in the pleasures of intelligent talk and acute observation. This is a magnificent book that deserves more than just a wide readership--it deserves a place in our national imagination.

Dazzling Read

This is a many-layered novel about a movie about a novel. Actors meet their real life counterparts, the culture industry reflects on itself, and we are drawn deep into a world full of self-awareness but still lacking in self-understanding. Goldhammer writes with wit, insight and an eye to the sweep of (recent) history. The characters are drawn sharply and boldly, in language that is at once literary and philosophical. This is bold, ambitious writing at its best.

After reading a serialized Mills & Boon book in a magazine, Penny Jordan quickly became an avid fan! Her goal, when writing romance fiction, is to provide readers with an enjoyment and involvement similar to that she experienced from her early reading - Penny believes in the importance of love, including the benefits and happiness it brings. She works from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by four dogs and two cats, and welcomes interruptions from her friends and family.

creepy smothering story

A barely readable story of immature heroine,knee jerk alpha, shallow family and seriously deranged OW/OM bother/sister.

You drugged me!' . 'Aren't you satisfied with the degradation you've already inflicted on me? His possession of her was brutally swift, making her gasp in sudden pain.

'Is this how our life together is going to be? Every time I turn my back are you going to attempt to escape me?'
'I am not your possession,' Danielle objected tiredly. 'You lied and cheated, forced me into a marriage I didn't want. Can you blame me for wanting to escape?'

"A woman, a donkey and a walnut tree, the more you beat them the better they be." Wow. How to have a happy marriage. There was simply nothing to warm up to, especially the classic weak simpering ending. This story is really bad writing.

Danielle refused outright. And meeting Jourdan only confirmed her decision.

He was dashing and bold and handsome, and she soon fell in love with him, but he was a man of the East, brought up to think of a woman's place as within the palace walls. Marriage to such a man could only eventually destroy her...

It's okay, but not great

I like the book, but I didn't love it. I had a hard time connecting with the main characters. I thought their dialogue and chemistry was okay and normally I like this author's work, but this one was just not my cup of tea.
