About the Author
Samuel Aryeetey-Attoh is Dean of the Graduate School at Loyola University, Chicago. He received his Ph.D. from Boston University and his M.A. from Carleton University, Ottawa. He also earned a B.A. degree with Honors from the University of Ghana, Legon, His research and teaching interests are in Urban and Regional Planning, Housing and Community Development, and the Geography of Development in Africa. He has published many articles in geographical journals and has received numerous research grants. He is past chair of the African Specialty Group of the AAG, co-editor of the African Geographical Review, a member of the American Council on Education Fellows and the American Institute of Certified Planners.�

A few notes on some of the pieces:

MY SOUL, YOUR BEATS! is the theme song for the series. It must have been difficult to transcribe for piano solo since it’s more a less a rock song, but I feel that this arrangement could have been better. While your right hand covers the melody line and chords, your left hand is basically just repeating single notes or fifths over and over again. It sounds pretty empty. I’ve seen a piano cover of this song on YouTube that sounds much better. This just seems to be the bare bones of the song written in piano format, and so it’s the biggest disappointment of the book.

The version of MY MOST PRECIOUS TREASURE in this book is the piano version. So it’s pretty much a perfect copy of the instrumental soundtrack version. There are no lyrics, and it is much shorter than the sung version. However, I think this was a wise choice because it is perfectly suited to piano solo and you can always repeat it if you want to make it longer.

KANADE is one of the songs in the soundtrack that sounds as though it couldn’t be transcribed successfully for piano alone. But I was wrong. This piano version of this song sounds absolutely perfect, as close to the original recording as possible. No disappointments here.

The rest of the actual soundtrack pieces all are great, and I doubt anyone could be disappointed with any of them, unless it’s with DEOCHI!, a goofy song that sounds pretty unnatural on the piano, but that’s only to be expected.

Lastly, the book itself. It’s a fairly large book (about 10x13), and the music itself is a little on the small side. What with that and the fact that it’s 112 pages, the book contains a quite a bit of music. However, 59 of those pages are comprised of piano versions of the rock songs sung by the fictional band Girls Dead Monster in the anime. This is a really nice addition, but I would have hoped that more of the space in the book would have been used for pieces from the actual soundtrack. Not to mention that these songs naturally don’t sound quite right on the piano alone.

The table of contents and the song titles are in English, so you should have no trouble finding your favorite pieces. The lyrics of the pieces are in Hiragana between the base and treble clefs, while at the end of each song with words there is a page that contains all of its lyrics written with Kanji and Hiragana. Unfortunately, there are no English translations of the lyrics within this book. The playing advice for each song is also only in Japanese. There is a suggested tempo for each song, which is really nice, and each piece has chords written along the top of the music. The playing difficulty ranges from intermediate to advanced.

The cover art is in color (Kanade on the front, Yuri and several other SSS members on the back), but the character sketches within are in black and white. Most of these sketches are of the Girls Dead Monster band members (including Yui), with the occasional Kanade, Yuri, and Hinata.

It's the real deal - piano arrangements from the master himself, Jun Maeda. Kanade, Ichiban no Takaramono, and the OP are all flawlessly transcribed, and the rest look pretty fun as well.

Be prepared to make photocopies though - this suffers from the impossible-to-keep-open bug that plagues all paperbound books.

Narrator Adams Morgan tells of Dorothy's adventures in an understated matter, and his less-is-more approach actually enhances the fantastical events occurring in the novel. Morgan does not overplay the characters, flexing his voice just a tad when speaking as the cowardly Lion, the brain-seeking Scarecrow, and the rusty Tin Man. Yet he keeps the action moving at a brisk pace, and makes the story easy to follow and compelling. Listeners only familiar with the legendary 1939 movie will have fun discovering the material not included in the film. The basic story is the same: a cyclone whisks Dorothy to Oz; her house lands on and kills a Wicked Witch; she hopes the great and wonderful Wizard of Oz will transport her back to Kansas; and she is joined on her journey to Oz by the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. In this complete version, the travelers encounter characters who are helpful (the Queen of the Field Mice, Morgan' giddiest characterization), strangely frightening (the bizarre Hammer-Heads), or surrealistic (the girl made of fine china). The Wicked Witch of the West not only sends flying monkeys to attack the heroes, but also wolves, crows, bees, and cowardly slaves called "Winkies." Some listeners may be surprised by the more violent sections of the story (the Tin Man uses his axe to decapitate foes, the Lion twists off the head of an enormous spider). This presentation may not rival Flo Gibson's classic reading of the story (Recorded Books, 1980), but does bring Baum's enthralling world to life.

L. Frank Baum (1856 1919) was an American author of books, short stories, and poetry. He is best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and thirteen other books about the Land of Oz. His books have been adapted for stage and screen and continue to be popular today.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

I started reading "Oz" with my kids a couple of months ago for school. I decided to use an english curriculum that taught nouns, pronouns, and such to my seven-year-olds that revolved around using literature to learn these concepts the fun way.
Our first book is "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". My kids and I have all seen the Judy Garland movie (more than once) and so we were all excited to start the book; eager to read about the munchkins, ruby slippers, and melting green witches.

For those of you that have read the book, you'll know that those slippers are, indeed, not ruby red. They are silver! What?!

Once I began reading to my girls, I knew that I needed to throw away all preconceived notions of what I thought this story was out the window. From the first chapter, it seemed that most of the similarities ended with a girl named Dorothy.

Once I was able to get into the book and empty my mind of the Hollywood counterpart, I was immediately able to immerse myself into the world of Oz.

The book is whimsical and silly. But, in an almost, grown-up way. There were bits of humor interlaced throughout that my girls just didn't get, but that would make me giggle.

Baum's classic made me realize--once again--that reading the book before seeing the movie should always be a priority.

And, now, I get to read the sequel with my nine-year-old.

The journey to Emerald City never gets old!

I recently rediscovered this great American classic tale with my daughter, and the journey to Emerald City never gets old. If you’ve seen the movie, then you’re already familiar with the adventure of Dorothy and Toto. While there are slight differences between book and movie, I’d say the movie, which was originally released in 1939, was a pretty good adaptation. Without spoiling anything, the book does have a splash of dark tones, but still very engaging.

Two things made reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz very special to me. First, the audiobook, narrated by actress Anne Hathaway, was an absolutely delightful listening experience! L. Frank Baum’s characters in this story are so magical, vivid, and lively. I thought Anne Hathaway flawlessly brought life with these familiar characters in her narration. The cast in the book is large, and there are some minor characters that weren’t portrayed in the movie. She had a different voice for everyone, and her ability to easily change her voice to the character of the moment showcased her excellent acting talents!

The other thing that was special to me was listening to this story with my daughter. The audiobook falls just slightly under four hours, so it’s definitely doable for young minds, especially since the story moves along at a nice pace. While I had read the book before, it was my daughter’s first journey to Oz, so to speak. We found ourselves quickly absorbed in the adventure and giggling at certain moments. Ms. Hathaway’s voices for the mice and stork were pretty funny! It was a lovely bookish, bonding experience for both of us, indeed. Whether you’ve seen the movie or read this book before, I still recommend the audiobook. It’s a very entertaining version of a timeless classic! *I purchased the audiobook, and this is my honest review.

Poor Quality Printed Edition

The quality of this edition is very poor. When I did a search for this title I didn't see any publishers I recognized, so I ordered this version. It is a strange copy with almost non-existent margins, long text lines, and a thin cover. When I went back to the "Look Inside" feature, I could then see an edition by Puffin featured down the sidebar. This thin copy was damaged during shipping, so I returned it and got the Puffin edition instead. (Wish I understood Amazon's search algorithms better so I could find good quality products on the first search page...)

A must read for fans of Celeste Ng's book Everything I Never Told You

One of my favorite books. I just loved how the story starts (with the death) and slowly explains how it came about as you read. Any time I love a book or have a book club book I grab a summary guide. They help me get more out of the book and pick up on things I may have missed. Great look into the symbols found throughout the book. No spoilers but this should come packaged with the original. The chapter summary helped me notice things I didn't before. Fantastic story and a fantastic summary guide to Everything I Never Told You. Highly recommended!

"'Chickenneckers' are city folk who come to Maryland's Eastern Shore with crab traps and chicken necks for bait. They crowd the bridge railings, docks, and public landings. The local people wish they would go away. This book is about the 'line between insiders and outsiders, between the excluders and the excluded.' In 1974, Jim Rouse, developer of Maryland's planned city, Columbia, announced his intention to build a similar community on the Eastern Shore's Wye Island. The alternative to his carefully conceived plan was a set of cookie-cutter subdivisions. But the same people who resented the chickenneckers wanted no part of Rouse's concept of the future. Gibbons describes Wye Island and its environs, its history, and its people with skill and objectivity. The book is excellent in all respects and should be read by those who care about the future of our communities." -- Library Journal, 6/15/1977

"This is not a scientific publication. The book contains no literature citation, it contains no reports on controlled scientific experiment, it contains no data, and there are no conclusions. It is a story of people in conflict over the attempted development of Wye Island, a small isalnd in the Chesapeake Bay off the Maryland Eastern Shore. The story centers around Jim Rouse, the developer of Columbia, Maryland, and other planned cities, and his efforts to develop Wye Isalnd in an environmentally acceptable manner. Jim had spent his boyhood near Wye Island, when the Eastern Shore was primarily rural, and wanted to protect the concept of 'open spaces' in his plan to develop the island for others to enjoy. Arrayed against him and his plan were the 'natives,' who opposed any change that would bring in outsiders, and the 'recent natives' who had moved in, established their estates, panoramic views, and seclusion, but did not anyone else to spoil these for them. In the end, Rouse and his plan were defeated, but Wye Island was saved from being subdivided into five acre lots by the State of Maryland, which purchased the island for open farming. Boyd Gibbons is an excellent writer. Through the use of flashbacks and maps, the reader is given a graphic account of the history of Maryland's Eastern Shore, the trials and tribulations of its early working-class inhabitants -- mostly farmers and fishermen -- and the luxury enjoyed by its rich inhabitants. With this background the reader is better able to understand why the people reacted as they did to Rouse's plan... Wye Island should be on the reading list of anyone involved in land-use planning. It addresses itself to that very nebulous subject of 'socio-economic' impact. While it gives no answers, it does give the planner an insight as to why people react the way they do to proposed changes." -- Journal of Environmental Quality, 1977

A first-rate, beautifully written book

Like Wye Island itself, this book is a real treasure. The story is fascinating and important--involving developers (both progressive and traditional), the varied layers of community residents, and the rich ecology of the Maryland Eastern Shore. But perhaps most striking is the way in which Boyd Gibbons tells this story. His prose is unusually strong and effective. He has a great gift for the apt description, the telling image, as well as for narrative flow. This is a book to read and to keep.
