Arendt and America, by Richard H. King

German-Jewish political philosopher Hannah Arendt (1906–75) fled from the Nazis to New York in 1941, and during the next thirty years in America she wrote her best-known and most influential works, such as The Human Condition, The Origins of Totalitarianism, and On Revolution. Yet, despite the fact that a substantial portion of her oeuvre was written in America, not Europe, no one has directly considered the influence of America on her thought—until now. In Arendt and America, historian Richard H. King argues that while all of Arendt’s work was haunted by her experience of totalitarianism, it was only in her adopted homeland that she was able to formulate the idea of the modern republic as an alternative to totalitarian rule.

Situating Arendt within the context of U.S. intellectual, political, and social history, King reveals how Arendt developed a fascination with the political thought of the Founding Fathers. King also re-creates her intellectual exchanges with American friends and colleagues, such as Dwight Macdonald and Mary McCarthy, and shows how her lively correspondence with sociologist David Riesman helped her understand modern American culture and society. In the last section of Arendt and America, King sets out the context in which the Eichmann controversy took place and follows the debate about “the banality of evil” that has continued ever since. As King shows, Arendt’s work, regardless of focus, was shaped by postwar American thought, culture, and politics, including the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War.

For Arendt, the United States was much more than a refuge from Nazi Germany; it was a stimulus to rethink the political, ethical, and historical traditions of human culture. This authoritative combination of intellectual history and biography offers a unique approach for thinking about the influence of America on Arendt’s ideas and also the effect of her ideas on American thought.

Review
“A major work of scholarship and a truly original and pathbreaking way of looking at Arendt and her work. King situates Arendt in an American context in which she is rarely considered, and he draws on his deep knowledge of U.S. intellectual, political, and social history as well as German philosophy to create a book that is one of the most original and important works on Arendt to have been written in many years.” (Dan Stone, Royal Holloway, University of London)

“This remarkably erudite and elegantly written book explains what happened when Hannah met America. King ushers us into the cultural and intellectual milieu of post-WWII New York and invites us to listen in on conversations between some of the leading intellectuals of the time. Arendt—uncompromising, relentlessly thoughtful, and downright difficult to the last—comes across as one of the great interpreters of modernity in all its tragic complexity. Forty years after her death, her thinking continues to enlighten the dark corners of our human condition.” (Jon Nixon, author of Hannah Arendt and the Politics of Friendship)

“King’s great contribution to the literature on Arendt is to show, in fine-grained terms, how her political theory was the result of a quintessentially American experience: to arrive on American shores an immigrant, to draw on resources from both an old country and a new, imagined one, and to participate in the riot of reinvention.”
 (Los Angeles Review of Books)

“In his latest book, Arendt And America, King argues that living in the United States allowed the German philosopher to think far beyond the simple dichotomies of political divisions — such as left and right — that led to the endless slaughter and complete break down of the European social order, before and during World War II. . . . King’s argument is certainly a persuasive one. And it’s pretty inconceivable that Arendt would have been able to write about totalitarianism (or anti-Semitism) in the same vein, had she not been both physically and spiritually distanced from Europe.”
 (Times of Israel)

“Among political theorists, there is no shortage of commentary on Hannah Arendt’s work. However, in examining the influence of the US on Arendt’s thought, King has developed a novel contribution to this literature.Like many books on Arendt, Arendt in America describes the debates that emerged regarding Arendt’s major political works, including The Origins of Totalitarianism, her writings on race (especially her essay on Little Rock), On Revolution, and Eichmann in Jerusalem. King situates Arendt’s position and the debates about it in a specifically American context, showing the ways in which her experience in the US, and with American political thought, influenced her thinking about politics. Her ‘philosophical’ work, most notably The Human Condition and her writings on Kant, do not receive the same level of attention as her more explicitly political writings. Moreover, some critical assessments of the controversies her writing produced receive an overly perfunctory treatment. However,Arendt in America fills an important gap in current scholarship.Well written and well researched, it offers a unique discussion of Arendt’s importance, including her contributions to republican theory, the nature of evil, and questions of modernity. Recommended.”
 (Choice)

“This book offers a detailed history of Arendt’s intellectual milieu in the United States, moving between her published writings, reviews and correspondence with her key interlocutors. . . . This is a concentrated, slow-burning book that requires careful reading, but is without question a rewarding theoretical and historical contribution.”
 (Times Literary Supplement)

Clearly written and illuminating. I have, at times, struggled with Arendt's ideas and writing. This book clarified a number of things for me. And yes, she carried the weight of European thought to America but through cultural and intellectual osmosis America gave her much to contemplate and absorb.

The Medic: Miracle on Hacksaw Ridge, by Adam Palmer

During WWII, a young man from Lynchburg, Virginia, was drafted into the Army and sent to the 77th Infantry Division. When he arrived at camp for basic training, he promptly made it known that he was a pacifist and would be unwilling to take a life or even so much as touch a weapon. He did, however, say that he would be proud to serve his country as a medic, if they would let him.

No matter how much pressure the Army applied, the medic was unwilling to compromise his convictions. The other soldiers in his unit came to hate the conscientious objector, going so far as to throw their boots at him while he knelt by his bunk at night to pray.

When the men of Company B assaulted "Hacksaw Ridge" on the island of Okinawa, something happened that would change their opinion of the medic forever.

A remarkable book.
By Frost
I received a free copy of THE MEDIC from the author to read and review. Here is my honest review
This is an exciting, interesting , and may I say, inspiring " non-fiction novel" about Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector because of his deeply held faith in the Seventh Day Adventist church. Nonetheless, Doss allowed himself to be drafted as a non- combatant, to serve as a medic in the U.S. Army.
The early pages of the book describe the disdain, even abuse, Doss attracted from other draftees and from officers. It was not an easy stand to take, being a CO in a war that began when your country was attacked, but Doss perseveres, devoted to prayer and worship, even as others scoff. That showed his fortitude and character.
But as the book moves on into chapters devoted to the combat missions of his regiment, Doss' true courage shines. Truly, if the events described in the book were not attested to in official documents, and other personal accounts, they would be hard to credit. But, they happened, and Desmond Doss was awarded the Medal of Honor.
Mr. Palmer, the author is not a writer by trade, but he was devoted to telling the story of this nearly forgotten hero and he does it wonderfully well. THE MEDIC is not just a recitatIon of the facts; the author relates Pvt. Doss fear in the hellish maelstrom of combat, and of Doss conquers his fear through prayer. The men around him , even those who scoffed at his piety, come to admire, even revere him. Doss becomes , in a way a paladin to them, guiding them, protecting them through prayer, giving his total concentration to giving them aid.

As I wrote, Mr. Palmer is not a pro and there a few errors. He uses the word " Bonsai" for " Banzai" in one para describing a mass attack by the Japaneese -- the mistake may have been one of those autocorrect typos. But Mr. Palmer does an otherwise fine job as he details the military training, transportation and combat movements of Doss' unit as it fought on Guam and Okinawa. I am not a vet nor a historian, just a history buff, and I think the book is well-researched and documented.
To sum: THE MEDIC is a fine book. It belongs on your shelf along with Rick Atkinson's US ARMY trilogy, Beevor's books on Stalingrad and Berlin, and because it is a novel, HERE TO ETERNITY. It is that good.
Ok, warnings: because it deals with combat, there are descriptions of wounds and death. And, because faith in God played such a great part in Desmond Doss' life, humility, prayer and love of God shine from the pages. It is a very inspiring book.

A good read about a great American hero
By Eric David Peterson
Palmer has given us a well-researched and well-written story of a soldier - a soldier who begins World War II like so many other young men in this country, but soon begins to distinguish himself for his faith, his bravery, and his dedication to saving lives on the battlefield. Palmer's meticulous attention to detail makes this book stand apart from many others of this genre. If you want to know what it was like to experience boot camp, to fire a bazooka, or to give morphine to a wounded soldier in the midst of the battle for Okinawa, then you owe it to yourself to read this book.

By the time we reach the climactic battle at Hacksaw Ridge, we care deeply about Desmond Doss and his fellow soldiers - the soldiers he has sworn to care for. We see his faith give him the courage and strength to accomplish great things and, because of what did, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Truman. Doss's story is one for the ages, and Palmer has done a fine job portraying these events.

The Side of War Not Usually Discussed
By Amazon Customer
As part of my work, I am a WWII historian and author. I primarily research soldiers who fought in the war and usually were Killed In Action. I had not yet stumbled upon a story in my research of a man whose religious beliefs did not allow him to bear arms. Then author Adam Palmer asked me to read and review his new fiction book based on a real man, "The Medic."

I appreciate stories about individual soldiers or groups of soldiers that put you in the action. They make you feel like you are there and time passes without you realizing it as you read the book. That is how this book made me feel.

Pvt. Doss, the primary soldier in this story, was part of the 77th infantry as a Medic. His religious beliefs do not allow him to bear arms but he still chooses to take part in the fight in a way that will help people. Throughout the story he encounters a lot of bullying and negativity for his position. A position he maintains no matter the circumstances. Yet through his actions, he is slowly accepted and appreciated for the gifts he has to help and heal.

The only thing I wish would appear in books like this, historical fiction based on real events, is a list of sources used. It is not common to put in sources in these types of books. For researchers such as myself, the bibliography and sources are the first thing I look at in a WWII book. I always want to know where else I can find resources. I have learned to try to contact the author if I have questions and usually they provide answers and sources.

I recommend this book for several reasons. It is the first I have come across someone telling a story about a concientious objector who chose to fight. We always hear the stories about those who refuse and go to jail or stories of soldiers who fought. The story provides a wonderful example of someone living by their faith and values regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is something rarer in our society today than it used to be. It is a story of healing. And, because the research for the story is good and the individuals are in the right places, right descriptions, right times. Not a bunch of historical facts thrown in to make it appear real.

If you are looking for a good read, check out "The Medic." You won't be disappointed.

This is not a book. It is a 400 page pat in the back on how great Dallas Page is. The "writing" is awful. It consists of endless accolades from friends on how great Page is. Not recommended!

Give this book to your kids!
By A Customer
This is a biased review. I'm gonna "mark out" on an old friend, but if you can't support your buddies, then what kinda buddy are you?
This is a great read for any wrestling fan. Provides a great perspective of what goes on "behind the curtain" in the WCW and what it takes to become a "Main Event" wrestler. It's a real metaphor for life in any other avenue, be it getting a good idea past the mind numbing middle management morons in Corporate America or accomplishing a personal dream.
Smokey (the author) has really done a great job of structuring the story of a guy who has lead, by any measure, a most unstructured life.
From the Page perspective, his book illustrates the power of personal conviction, what a person can do to overcome obstacles that life throws at them. Even if some obstacles are occasionally self inflicted, Page demonstrates how he overcame some bad habits, refused negative thinking, demonstrated the ability, and if I may, the humility to admit his mistakes and reinvent himself. That's right... I used "humility" to describe an attribute of Page Falkinburg.
Bottom line, it's a great motivational book, not by preaching, but by relating personal defeats, setbacks and victories by example. You can't help but to pick up on the energy level of Page.
It's been a long ride from the dart games at the Moby, hey buddy?

Ya love meYa Hate MeYoull NEVAFORGET ME!
By Kevin C
Just like the man himself, Diamond Dallas Page, said, you'll never forget him after reading this book. Sure, wrestling is fake. I know that. So's everything else on TV. But the injuries are real, and that's something Diamond Dallas Page talks about in this book. From the broken arm he sustained that took him out for months, to the time in his childhood when he was hit by a car, he took every negative, and turned it into a positive. Hit by a car? He became the lead scorer on his school's basketball team, because he practiced standing there and shooting. Broken arm? He studied videotape of himself for months, and polished up his ring game. Page's trip through his life is a very inspirational one, from his days owning bars and clubs, to being the best manager of a wrestler around, to doing the impossible, and becoming the THREE-TIME...THREE-TIME...THREE-TIME World Heavyweight Champion of WCW. Like a yo-yo, Page's journey has it's ups and down, it's dips and it's returns, but Page always finds a way to bounce back from adversity. I hope you buy this book, and find its tale helpful to your life. Once you open this book, you will feel the BANG! and you will feel the true-life story of a hero, a legend, and a great man.

Power and International Relations: A Conceptual Approach, by David A. Baldwin

Contrary to conventional wisdom, the concept of power has not always been central to international relations theory. During the 1920s and 30s, power was often ignored or vilified by international relations scholars--especially in America. Power and International Relations explores how this changed in later decades by tracing how power emerged as an important social science concept in American scholarship after World War I. Combining intellectual history and conceptual analysis, David Baldwin examines power's increased presence in the study of international relations and looks at how the three dominant approaches of realism, neoliberalism, and constructivism treat power.

The clarity and precision of thinking about power increased greatly during the last half of the twentieth century, due to efforts by political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, economists, philosophers, mathematicians, and geographers who contributed to "social power literature." Baldwin brings the insights of this literature to bear on the three principal theoretical traditions in international relations theory. He discusses controversial issues in power analysis, and shows the relevance of older works frequently underappreciated today.

Focusing on the social power perspective in international relations, this book sheds light on how power has been considered during the last half century and how it should be approached in future research.
