Really different from her usual work.

I have so many conflicted emotions on this book. It was a really good story, and that writing is the usual best from Kaje Harper. Some will read this and say it isn't as romance-y as they would want it. I'm on the minority because I'm super glad that romance kinda played in the background of the story. After I finished reading it, I was unsure of my thoughts regarding the main character's relationship. Brian Kerr is a special needs person, and it's not clear by the end what he really suffers from. Dyslexia is a sure thing, but the other terms like Schziophernia, and Dissociative Identity Disorder is mentioned. Don't get me wrong, people with mental illness should be able to love when, and whomever they want to. My thing was I felt like his entire life people have taken advantage of him, and the one person he opens up to takes advantage of him in my opinion. I'm not saying Nick did it to be malicious, but I was pissed that he took it there seeing as he was not being his truthful self that was needed.

Onto the story itself it was good. My kind of suspense and thriller with a little paranormal thrown into it. We start off with Nick fighting in a bar, Nick who has a mantra about himself earning his name. On the other hand, we have Nick the cop. Nick rides that fine line between his morals as a person and a cop. Reading this book, I'm kinda surprised on his morals as a cop. It doesn't seem like he cares about anyone else. In the next book, I hope we get to see more of his self and his past. Hopefully things work out. I liked the characters in the story alot. These are people that I can definitely see on screen as well. The characters are so real, and gritty. Damon and Lori are bad a**! Say what you want, and they might not care about other people but they are family and they stick together. I honestly understand why they are the way they are. Their childhood was screwed up. They survived by using what they got. As much as I despised some of Damon's actions in the story, I love him for never giving up on his brother. Loved seeing the drama surrounding some of the characters. I really enjoyed how the story came to. I was so freaking nervous about Nick & Brian. It literally was a point in the story where I cried at 72% and I don't know if that was the author's expectations, but those scenes all the way to the end had me in tears. I cried off and on, until the very last page.

I was so conflicted that I had to email Kaje Harper and ask her certain questions! She was a doll for answering them. I really love her work, and I always say this but she is a realistic writer in my opinion. Everything happening in this story you can definitely picturing it happening in a suburb somewhere, and these characters are somewhere out there in the world. Don't know what's in store for book two, but I'm ecstatic for what's more to come.

Courageous, Well-Written, But Not Complete

Kaje Harper is one of the top gay fiction authors around. And I must give her particular kudos for taking the kinds of risks, in “Tracefinder: Contact”, that few other authors would dare. The result is an incredible book, but one that, unfortunately, doesn’t quite satisfy.

Let me explain. This is, quite obviously, the first book in a new series. It’s not like any gay novel you’ve ever read. There’s romance, but it’s far from a typical gay romance. It’s an undercover-cop procedural and action-thriller with lots of excitement, danger and seriously evil villains. It features a cop with issues. Nick is a great cop, but one who wrestles daily with the anger that bubbles up within him. A product of the foster-care system, separated from his beloved sister when both were young kids, furious and guilty over the 17 years he’s not been able to find her, he tends to spend his nights in neighborhood bars, waiting for a justified fist-fight that will allow him to vent his frustrations on the bad guys.

He’s a gorgeous man who dresses to hide his attractiveness, a man who limits his sex life to occasional and rare one-night stands. He’s of modest height, but he’s got a great, sexy, wiry body that he uses for violence rather than love-making.

Nick is loaned to a joint task force between the Minneapolis PD and the DEA to get some dangerous new designer drugs off the street – drugs that are killing young people. His job: to infiltrate the organization that’s manufacturing and distributing these drugs from a huge base across the nation - from San Diego to Minneapolis, with stops in between and labs in the Southeast.

While he ingratiates himself with the lowlifes who form the backbone of this crime ring, mostly chugging beer and winning fights at the local dive bar, he meets a rather unusual family, three siblings who work with Vern Marston, the evil mastermind behind it all. The older brother is Damon, Marston’s most trusted muscle and enforcer; the sister is Lori, Marston’s new, young, pregnant wife; and, most intriguing of all is Brian or “Bry”, Lori’s twin.

“Bry” comes off as a severely mentally deficient young man. He’s 6’-2”, a bit overweight, with a pasty-white complexion and thin, almost-white hair. He also appears to suffer from a bad case of arrested development, speaking and acting like a 10-year-old. He can’t read or write, but every now and then, intelligence seems to radiate from his beautiful blue eyes. He also exudes innocence, kindness and gentleness, a radical contrast with the thugs who surround him and his family.

Nick is not in the closet, and he won’t lie about his sexual orientation, but neither does he advertise it. Yet, immediately upon meeting this huge child, he picks up a certain vibe, perhaps even a knowing flirtation.

At a certain point, Nick comes to realize that Brian is at least two people. He’s the ignorant, petulant child, but he also demonstrates a rare adult intelligence and insight, but only to him. And yes, he was flirting, which makes Nick feel extremely guilty at being aroused by this overgrown child. But a lot less guilty when he sees the self-aware and smart young man hiding from his environment and all the dangers surrounding him. “Bry”, the child personality, is the protective armor Brian wears. If he acts and thinks like a child, he’ll be invisible.

Ms. Harper takes a lot of chances with this fledgling series, and I applaud her for that. This is not a standard romance with two gorgeous, hot men finding one another. Brian is less than attractive, though Nick sees something truly beautiful and arousing about him. There’s not a heck of a lot of sex – most of the book is action and revelation, and though the sex is emotionally intense, it’s not entirely explicit or erotic. I like that. It leaves a lot of space to deal with plot and character development.

What really shakes things up is a very special talent that Brian has had since he was young. His mother was a heroin addict, more interested in her next fix than the poverty her children somehow survived. She would regularly go missing. Brian was the only one who could find her. He has the incredible psychic ability to locate people, even people he’s never met, by touching objects that they’ve owned and handled. That’s why Marston keeps him around, so he can find his enemies and those disloyal to him, which leaves Brian desperately avoiding thinking about what Marston does to the people he “Finds” for him. But he can also “Find” missing children and dangerous criminals evading the law. He’s grown tired of the bad stuff, even though he knows the only reason he has a roof over his head is because of the benefits he brings to the crime boss who shelters him. Ms. Harper wraps her main characters in a cloak of moral ambiguity – they’re not squeaky-clean. They’re flawed, but good guys in relation to how bad the bad guys are, and men who would be better, if circumstances allowed.

Ms. Harper makes the “Finding” process most dramatic. Brian can “Find” almost anyone, but it extracts a huge cost both physically and mentally. He is so wiped out after he’s “Found” someone that he often passes out, and sometimes doesn’t awaken for days. But he continues doing what he does to protect his sister and brother, no matter how much he longs to use his gift for good. Nick is the key to getting to a place where he can do good without getting killed or committed to an insane institution.

Like I said, this is not your regular gay romance novel. To be quite honest, Tracefinder: Contact would make a great bestselling police thriller in its own right, without the gay theme. So why not 5 stars? The book is beautifully written. The characters are incredibly rich and detailed, the dialogue (both internal and external) is letter-perfect and there’s a deep authenticity to the entire book. But the author ended it too soon. I know the books that follow will take Nick and Brian’s relationship and adventures further and further, but still, each book in a series deserves to have a reasonably satisfying ending, and this one doesn’t. The relationship between the two men is left up in the air, some characters who absconded are still in the wind, and Nick’s bosses still want to use Brian to lure them back to capture.

I want more. I was moved at so many points in this story, but not by the ending. It’s not so much a cliffhanger as a petering-out to leave enough runway to launch the next book. I’m not sure that’s at all fair to the reader, even from such a talented and masterful author as Kaje Harper.

Still, I must admit, I’m waiting with bated breath for the next one. So, despite my misgivings, I urge you to read “Tracefinder: Contact”. Just don’t expect a neat happily-ever-after with everything tied up in a nice neat bow. The reading experience is more than worth the time and effort you’ll invest in it and the books that will, I assume, follow. Think of this one as the introduction to a potentially killer new series, and you won’t be disappointed.

Great beginning to Nick & Brian's story.

For people who love Abigail Roux's "Cut & Run" series (9 books or audibles) or Josh Lanyon's, "The Adrien English Mysteries" (5 books or audibles), then you will have the patience and understanding of how this beginning could turn out to be an AMAZING journey for Nick and Brian (Bry). There are just so many possibilities.

Ok, so I love this story because it is sooooo far from from the typical MM romance. Though this is found under 'mm romance' (mainly because there is no other genre that can classify this awesome story without SOMEONE feeling offended), this story can honestly be classified as a Thriller, Suspense, Paranormal, (maybe little bit) Mystery, or (more so) Crime Mystery Paranormal with the main characters being gay men and who find themselves attracted to each other, but have a long journey that they must go through before that attraction can be really be acted upon and (even more importantly) before a 'Happily Ever After' can be reached.

And, seeing as this is only the first book, I'd say maybe the journey will come to an end in book two or maybe not. Either way, I am so on board for Nick and Brian's journey and my heart is already twisting anxiously for the betrayal. Because no matter which way you look at it, SOMEONE will feel the sting of betrayal. I am so excited!

I appreciate the author taking the time to create such a unique world (plot) for her characters to fight through because when that moment comes (Nick & Brian) not being able to even breath without each other, it's going to be beautiful. At least I'm hoping it will because that's how I felt about Zane & Ty and Adrien & Jake when it happened in their series because you're given so much more than erotica on every other page being called romance and that equally unconditional love. I feel that way for FM romances (which I've all but given up on) and MM romances (which I can't get enough of). So when I find a gem of a story like TraceFinder:Contact, I get my hooks in the author and stalk them unabashedly on Amazon, Goodreads, Audibles, and Facebook.lol

So, again, Great beginning to Nick & Brian story. And, is any body else desperate to find out how, what, how again... about Lori's baby? I mean...jeez!!!

A Panopolis Story

Panopolis is a rough place to be an average Joe. I came here looking for adventure and excitement, but nobody cares about one more normal guy in a city filled with super-powered heroes. The closest I’ve come to glory is working in a bank that villains often rob.

But then I maybe accidentally-on-purpose helped a villain escape the hero who was trying to save the day. Imagine my shock when, a week later, that villain asked me out for coffee. One date turned into more, and now I’m head over heels in love with Raul.

Falling in love with the guy dubbed the Mad Bombardier isn’t without its downsides, though. I’ve had to deal with near-death encounters with other villains, awkwardly flirtatious heroes who won’t take no for an answer, and a lover I’m not sure I can trust. It’s getting to the point where I know I’ll have to make a choice: side with the heroes, or stand fast by my villain.

Either way, I think my days as a normal guy are over.

Cari Z has expertly penned and brilliantly executed a story that has me all kinds of excited!

I have to admit, I’m not a comic book or superhero fan and I have never read a book by Cari Z, but that blurb… I couldn’t resist… and just had to #oneclick and I am so glad I did… This is a fabulous little gem that reverses the usual preconceived notions of the superheroes found in this cult classic genre; interspersed at the beginning of each chapter with some insight into the city of Panopolis by blog reporter SuperTruther, who enlightens us with bulletins that give us a glimpse of the corrupt politics, and highlights the propaganda of how the embellished good and vilified evil is twisted, in a city where everything is not all as it seems.

It was SuperTruthers tales of heroes and villains that first drew Edward to Panopolis, well, that and the excitement of witnessing those tales first hand and possibly coming face to face with a real life hero. Getting a job in a bank was a bonus for Edward and the thought of getting rescued by a hero was his dream, but when the Mad Bombardier turns up to rob the bank, it’s actually Edward that ends up saving the villain.

I loved this contorted vision of Cari Z’s world, where the superheroes have selfish over inflated egos and the villain of the piece is the one with the touch of emotional compassion, I found myself rooting for the villain and rolling my eyes at the hero… but I’m always a sucker for the bad boys!

Despite this being a novella, I didn’t feel short changed in the slightest with regard to content, there seemed to be so much more packed into this book than the page count actually dictates and that is not something that is easily achieved, especially when it’s the first book in a series. Cari Z has expertly penned and brilliantly executed a story that has me all kinds of excited to get my hands on the next book, which for me, has been set up perfectly. Where There’s Smoke is a refreshingly original and very clever, if a little dark and distorted view of a world where the heroes and villains become a source of revenue to a corrupt society that is happy to turn a blind eye, to bask in the glory of good… supposedly benefiting the citizens of this metropolis… with our two main characters embroiled right in the thick of it.

In all the madness of this crazy city and despite Raul (Mad Bombadier) being a villain, it was the love between Raul and Edward that really got to me, there is such a simplicity to it, which I particularly liked. But at the same time, it’s so intense. I really felt the connection between these two men, and I loved how Cari Z very cleverly and subtly weaved this into the story, with the result being something quite beautiful, in and amongst all the chaos.

And it comes complete with a mad scientist… haha, I love that!

I personally enjoy anything with superheros

This was an intriguing start to what will be a new series. In Panopolis there are villains and superheroes as well as ordinary citizens going about their lives. I personally enjoy anything with superheros. This book seemed to get complex as the book goes along. It’s not just good guys vs the bad guys. Those lines tend to get blurred and that’s how Edward ends up falling for a villain. As the author notes in her dedication “For everybody who has always preferred the villain. I feel you people.” Sometimes there are good bad men.

Edward moved Panopolis hoping for some excitement like so many others. He’s surprised it takes so long for him to encounter one of the super-powered. The bank where Edward works is robbed by the notorious Mad Bombardier. Who got his name by excelling at bomb making. Edward is panicked and afraid but he finds himself helping the Mad Bombardier out of the situation. Catching the eye of a villain and the hero who almost finally had Mad Bombardier. Mad Bombardier is intrigued by the bank employee and seeks out Edward. Edward knows he shouldn’t be enamored with a villain but Raul, Mad Bombardier, is a kind man who he has chemistry with and he can’t seem to say no to Raul’s advances. He doesn’t want to.

Falling for a villain isn’t an easy thing. There’s shame for loving a “villain” and there’s always a chance they’ll get caught or worse die working a job. Edward struggles with this but knows having Raul is worth it. Raul is happy to have someone to share his life with. Open and honestly. The first half of this novella is a pretty sweet romance with some action and hints of what’s to come. The more you read the more you realize things are quite right in Panopolis. Some of the revered heroes and cops are under the thumb of the evil GMO chemical group. Whether it’s deliberate or not you start to understand what it would be like if to go against their wishes. The group wields a huge amount of power throughout the city. If they want you gone. You’re gone. This is the part of the book that had me sitting up and wanting more.

Overall the romance was a good one. They guys don’t whine or really resist falling for each other. In fact I would have liked a little more of the transition from I shouldn’t date a villain to turning the page and they spend almost every night together. Personally I just like reading that part. It didn’t take away from the story necessarily but it may have helped endear me to the couple more. I think I loved them a little more after the big finally scene towards the end. So much devotion when everything is stacked against them. I was definitely left wanting more. The ending opened up a whole bunch of possibilities for the direction of the story. I love political intrigue! I also liked the idea about how sometimes you’re pushed into a corner and become the bad guy because you want to survive. Or that’s how you’re perceived. I don’t always see things as black or white. There are definitely shades of grey and that’s where you’ll find Raul and Edward. I like that about them. Edward may have taken a little longer to see that he should follow his heart even if it’s not what he’s told is right or the easy thing to do but he knows now. Things should get pretty interesting from here. Looking forward to reading how the guys get out of their jam and hopefully take the bad/good guys out.

Intriguing Premise With Thought-Provoking Elements

With the growing popularity of superheroes in movies and tv I was immediately drawn to the unique premise of this thought-provoking and action-packed series starter. With its larger than life characters and intriguing dichotomy of good versus evil readers will find themselves quickly immersed in this compelling world seen through the eyes of a naive man learning hard truths way too fast.

The city of Panopolis is the epicenter of a war between heroes and villains created through nefarious means enabled by pharmaceutical companies and condoned by the city's hierarchy. The police force has become merely a figure head as the citizens place their faith wholeheartedly in the growing number of heroes against the increasingly dangerous society of villains. Looking for adventure, and fascinated by stories of heroes and villains, the sweet and somewhat naive Edward has recently moved here and quickly finds himself caught up in the concept of good and evil from which he'll never be the same. At first Edward saw the heroes as the good guys with no imperfections but interactions with Freight Train (aka Craig) show a hero with a bit of an ego. Meeting the Mad Bombadier (aka Raul) as he's robbing the bank Edward works at shows a villain far more compelling and attractive than any hero inside and out. In a relationship that starts out very slowly there's lots of conflict revolving around the acts of violence Raul commits but it's clear he has a conscience and does all he can to keep Edward safe from his deeds. Edward's conflict is heartbreaking as their connection is deep and clear and it makes for a few rocky moments for the pair amidst some very sensual and steamy interactions. Just when it looks as if they're heading towards HEA someone close to Edward sets off their own explosion that puts him in danger and irrevocably changes him and his relationship with Raul in a very intriguing way.

This story may have started out slow but quickly picked up its pace as readers discovered more about the creation of the heroes and villains and the unethical means by which it sometimes happens. It engenders lots of sympathy towards the villains when you're picturing them as lab rats. In comparison, the heroes take a backseat in this tale and seem bland when in the company of such colorful villains. Edward started off a bit quiet and naive but through his discoveries grew stronger which he'll need after the dramatic change forced upon him by the supposed good guys. Through it all Raul stayed by his side and in an heroic way saved him which further blurs the lines of good and evil repeatedly touched on throughout the story. Their romance was slow to build but culminated in some very steamy encounters that were nicely balanced with the action and suspense showing them as a formidable duo who I look forward to seeing avenge what befell Edward. This was an exciting start to a series that makes you question your beliefs and with its emotionally intense ending I'm excited to see where the story will go next and will be counting down the days until the next installment.

JOHN MCMURRY, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He as received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969-71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975-80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986-87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991).

ROBERT C. FAY, Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University, has been teaching general and inorganic chemistry at Cornell since 1962. Known for his clear, well-organized lectures, Dr. Fay was the 1980 recipient of the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. Great Textbook

I am finishing up mt 2nd semester of college chemistry. Our school switched from the previous edition of this book to one by Chang. The Chang book is so hard to get into and understand the school is already looking at changing. I bought this book to help me finish out the year. This is so much easier to understand. It is clearly written with significantly more examples. I wish we had the book a long time ago. I am fine with spending the money on a second textbook when it actually clears up issues I have had. This is a great book and I definitely recommend it.

Great for someone reviewing chemistry

I needed a chemistry text that would allow me to review the concepts. Some of the well-known texts are great but somehow not really friendly to the non-student who's reading it on his or her own. I agree with one of the reviews that says that this book is a little "chatty," but I think that helps make it more readable for self-study. The order in which concepts are presented helps make the more technical aspects (stoichiometry, electronegativity trends, orbitals, etc) more relevant by the time you arrive at them. The numerous worked examples are wonderful to help with understanding, especially for the non-student, who doesn't have homework, teachers, or grades forcing me to work all of the problems. (I know that's the way you really learn this stuff, so for students out there--your chem teacher is absolutely right that doing the problems is the only way to gain a true understanding.) If I were in a class, I might prefer a text like Brown & LeMay, which is more tightly written and feels more informationally dense. But this one, with its breezy, narrative writing style, suits my needs just fine.

Chemistry Plus Mastering Chemistry with etext-access card

As you can see by the item description, it clearly says it comes with "etext-access card package", however when the book was received, it did not contain this. Apparently went you rent the book, it is not included. That was not how it was advertized. Please be more specific, since this is not the same product I wanted at all.
I shop amazon a lot, and this was the first time I was very disappointed in my order.
Please change this description so that others do not make the same mistake.

Outstanding Book on Personal and Organizational Change

I was surprised by this book, being the cynic that I am about change books. I spent 30 years in Corporate America that last 15 working in 'change'. Most books aren't down to earth and what the Professor's say isn't based on actually having done anything. I don't know Dr. Myles Munroe, would love to meet him but he does know change from working around the world with multi-cultural groups on change. He is a Christian and uses some scriptures to make some points but it is not a religious book by any means but he gets his message across.

It is one of the very few change books I would endorse as being real. He takes you through realistic, real world change from beginning to end. Very impressive work. If you're interested in change then here is a great starting point.

The author of Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success; Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man; and Straight Talk, No Chaser, Steve Harvey began doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s. His success as a stand-up comedian led to the WB’s hit show The Steve Harvey Show, which has won multiple NAACP Image Awards. He was featured in Spike Lee’s film The Original Kings of Comedy. In addition to his nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, Steve hosts a daily talk show on NBC, is the gameshow host for Family Feud and Celebrity Family Feud, and most recently NBC’s top rated new show, Little Big Shots. A philanthropist, he is the founder of the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia and Chicago, Illinois.

Outstanding!!

I'm an Active Duty Service member currently deployed away from my beautiful family. I challenged myself to read this book as quickly as possible because I knew it was going to give me that push I needed to JUMP! Steve Harvey I thank God for you and the things you continue to do. You are my biggest inspiration and pray one day I get the chance to meet you in person. I will lean to this book as a tool and a reminder to JUMP! Thank you and God bless!!

Inspirational, motivational, and real. A good read and very obvious it's written from his heart. I enjoyed this book and no doubt will read it over and over as many times as I need the push and motivation to jump.

Good book to get advise and motivation.

Notes on steves book:
4 stars, definitely. I can understand why some readers may feel otherwise. In this book, he is speaking to his audience or rather an audience already familiar with his talk show, videos, and books. So, if this is your first book for him and you're looking for step by step instructions, this isn't the book for you. You need to start with his book "Act like an success, think like an success".

But it's still a good read, Steve shares personal examples you can learn from. You're going to wish sometimes there was a little organization to the history of his example, but sometimes different messages calls for different examples. Keep reading and you'll find the gems of knowledge. I advise buying.
