About the Author
Rowan Williams, the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, is an acclaimed theologian, writer, and pastor, in addition to being the spiritual leader of the world's 100 million Anglicans. He was a lecturer at Cambridge University and held the Lady Margaret Chair of Divinity at Oxford University. He has been Canon Theologian of Leicester Cathedral, Bishop of Monmouth in the Church of Wales, and Archbishop of Wales. He is the author of several books, including The Dwelling of Light and A Ray of Darkness.

The bland title of this book gives no hint of its powerful subject matter or of its important message. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and the leader of the worldwide Anglican church, introduces the Egyptian desert fathers and mothers of the fourth century in such a way as to show how and why they remain so relevant for today. I count this as one of the best books on Christian discipleship or formation that I have read in the past year.

If you are unfamiliar with desert monasticism this book is an excellent place to start. An introduction situates the monastic movement in its day and age, suggests some of its salient characteristics and themes, disabuses us of superficial caricatures, makes liberal use of primary sayings and stories from the monastics, and, best of all, suggests specific contemporary applications for church life today. Williams is not only a notable scholar; he is an excellent writer with enviable pastoral sensitivities. In four chapters he examines Life, Death, and Neighbors; Silence and Honey Cakes; Fleeing; and then Staying. The book concludes with a substantial collection of the sayings of the desert fathers organized by theme--hospitality, obedience, modesty, charity, discretion, humility, and so on (pp. 123-161). An all too brief bibliography suggests further reading.

Probably no one who reads this book will become a monk, but that is besides the point. One of the desert mothers, Amma Syncletica, explains: "There are many who live in the mountains and behave as if they were in the towns. You can be solitary in your mind even when you live in the middle of the crowd. And you can be a solitary and still live in the middle of the crowd of your own thoughts." For the desert monastics of the fourth century, and for us today, the interior geography of your heart is far more important (and complex) than the exterior coordinates of your address. Whether dealing with the prosaic boredom of everyday life, conformity to culture, our individualist impulses, our rosy romanticism that exudes naivety ("Expect trials until your last breath," advised one father), flight from responsibility, the terrors of temptation, discouragement and its concomitant lethargy, or the ego's endless quest for self-justification, these saints are competent advisors. Their wisdom comes from hard fought experience and is not arid theory. Contrary to common misperceptions, these faithful guides are people of tenderness, honesty, humor and humility. We Christians need their wisdom more than ever, and this book is a fine place to begin.

Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, draws from the wisdom of "the Desert Monks" for their teaching from the monastic life to bring us this study on contemplation, community, and life with God.

The Desert Father's understanding of issues on community and living together in an intimate meaningful way are central in the lessons we can learn from these teachings.

Williams looks at fourth century Christian hermits living in the deserts of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine as role models for today's culture. Their teaching for dealing with the anxieties, uncertainties, and feelings of isolation are as relevant today as in their day.

In the foreward Desmond M. Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus, states, "It is good to know that the desert mothers and fathers said we can all be contemplatives and that we can have our deserts in the crowded places where we live and work."

The wisdom of the desert tradition provides many insights into the inner workings of the spiritual life. "If the motives of the desert mothers and fathers could be summed up in one aspiration, it would be to come to the state of continuous prayer...such prayer is not a matter of words or forms but an opening of consciousness to the life of the spirit flowing in the present moment of God, the making of our mind to be one with the mind of Christ."

In the introduction to the book, Laurence Freeman, OSB, Director of The World Community for Christian Meditation, commented on what "pure" prayer should be, "That means that it is more centered in and characterized by the silence of the heart and less in the images and concepts of mental prayer or in external ritual."

I chose to read "Where God Happens" as my focus for a period of renewal and contemplation. As I imagined myself in a monk's cell, in the African desert of the fourth century, I learned lessons on the habits of self awareness and the importance of working toward and ever greater honesty about self through a more constant exposure to God in Bible reading and prayer. I was challenged to continue the process until I become what I was meant me to become.

While scholarly in approach this book is not a theological treatise but a call to humility and simplicity in living together in the twenty-first century community.

This is the kind of book you read from start to finish without realizing a few hours just flew by. I've shown it to a number of friends and even the non-Evel fans have a hard time putting it down. Evel Ways is packed with pictures, captions and personal sidebars all woven into a fascinating story line. The book highlights many of the everyday people in Evel's life as well as the famous people who became Evel's pals over the years including a tribute from Muhammad Ali and Jack Nicklaus.
The first authorized book ever from the King of Suntmen is sure to be a record breaker and priced right to boot. Excellent reading, great gift book and immediate collectors item for every Evel Knievel memorabilia enthusiast. Wish I'd have hung on to that Evel lunchbox.

Another success for Evel!

I am a long time fan of the Great One. This book was everything I was hoping for. Lots of pictures and anecdotes. It resolved many questions I had concerning his career and life. I would strongly recomend it. Just wish that the book was a little larger but otherwise a must read for those who grew up watching the greatest daredevil ever.

Someone dropped this book into my lap the other day. Such an interesting topic! Evel is pompous as all get out; cocky; womanizing; self-serving; a true American and a real legend. He did stupid stunts and thrilled audiences worldwide. If you have any curiousity whatsoever about what made Evel Knievel, get this book. You'll read it in one sitting, and get an eye-popping glimpse into some amazing photos. If you have any curiousity whatsoever about the psychosis of hype, how the media works, and how lucrative lying can be, this book will provide you with some clues. Just read between the lines (assuming there are other intelligent people out there who are curious about Evel). At the end, I felt sorry for the guy; I realized how human he really is. ...

It is due to the premeditated MiseduKKKation of the Afrikan! It is due to an edukkkational system which was created with the intentions of stripping Afrikans of our spiritual, cultural and historical identities, to steal the humanity and humanness of Afrikans, dehumanizing us, to recreate Afrikans as creatures called niggers. This new process of creating niggers has now been classified as a field of study, within their xenophobic edukkkational system which is known as, "Niggerology," or the study of niggers.�

Niggerology is that part of the xenophobes' system of misedukkkation, which specifically deals with the incorrect, non-healthy, spiritually draining information that is given to Black people every day, in the form of edukkkation, politics, finance, and in religion. This book is written on the principles and premise of, "When you know better, you will do better!"

I and the original Afrikans know the Deity as Neter, and is in fact nature itself. When you begin to reverse the psychological brainwashing process, initiated and instigated by the xenophobic invaders thousands of years ago; you come to the realization that there is no God or Jesus, only Neter. Both God and Jesus are the inventions of xenophobic racists' imaginations. Until we can get those ideas out of our psyches we will be forever trapped.

Are Afrikans ever going to begin the process of reversing and undoing those counterfeit concepts, in the minds of our people, which have been deliberately put into our minds, by erroneous religious teachings, false doctrines, and disadvantageous religious agendas, which have been purposely created, to place and to keep Afrikans in those destructive and dysfunctional situations, which make sure Afrikans remain in roles and positions of inferiority in regards to White supremacy? When will we open our minds and challenge Asiatic deceptions and Caucasian appointed Black leaders?

My kids love this book! They have read several parts aloud in the car, to the guffaws and chuckles of the audience. (They also took care to reassure their younger sibling that it wasn't really too scary.) They delighted in the pictures and clever descriptions. They have in turn each taken it to their rooms to peruse during quiet time, and then taken it again after finishing it once. My oldest kid is also loving the Wingfeather stories. (I am loving the Wingfeather stories, too!)

Pembrick's Creaturepedia is the perfect companion to Andrew Peterson's Wingfeather Saga. My girls loved stopping after every other chapter to look at the sketches of any creature that we encountered in the pages of the series. This really helps the already vivid stories come to life in all the fun details.

My eight year old daughter is fascinated with this book, and loves being able to fill in some imagination blanks of the creatures in the Wingfeather Saga. You never know when you might need your kids to recognize a thwap so they can catch it and toss it in the neighbors yard. :) Great companion to a great series.

Es un excelente libro que tiene una muy buena descripci�n de la vida cotidiana en Tenochtitl�n. El autor describe los detalles de la vida diaria de una forma que te imaginas la ciudad perfectamente.

Adem�s, es un muy buen libro para entender como fue el encuentro entre Moctezuma y Cort�s. tiene una excelente investigaci�n hist�rica.

About the Author
Janet Brennan Croft is Head of Access and Delivery Services and Faculty of Research and Instructional Services at the Rutgers University libraries. She is the author of War in the Works of J. R. R. Tolkien (Praeger, 2004; winner, Mythopoeic Society Award for Inklings Studies) and has written on the Peter Jackson films, J. K. Rowling, Terry Pratchett, Lois McMaster Bujold, and other authors. She is the editor or co-editor of four collections of literary essays. She also edits the refereed scholarly journal Mythlore and serves on the Mythopoeic Press Editorial Board. Leslie A. Donovan is a Professor in the Honors College at the University of New Mexico, where she teaches interdisciplinary humanities courses for undergraduates. Among her publications are studies of valkyries in The Lord of the Rings (included in this collection), Tolkien’s mythology, women saints’ lives in Old English prose, the character of Hunferth in Beowulf, and various pedagogical topics. She has edited Approaches to Teaching Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Other Works forthcoming from the Modern Language Association. In addition, she is the Editor of the Mythopoeic Press.

Impressive research, thinking, writing

From its beautifully illustrated cover worthy of the book's title to the index at the end, Perilous and Fair is a scholarly and comprehensive investigation of the beloved author's views on women and portrayal of them in his literature. The fourteen articles reach deep into the subject and include the Tolkien scholars' opinions as well as their research. Rich information here, including (new for me) the concept of "fanfiction."

Unrecognized Depths:Tolkien's Views Of Women In Middle-earth

In J.R.R. Tolkien's books women play an important, though limited, role. There are no female characters at all in The Hobbit (actually causing Peter Jackson to create one for his movie version), and while there are a number of important women in The Lord of the Rings, the characters who are present in every chapter are all male. This has led some critics to label Tolkien misogynistic or merely schoolboyish. This collection of essays does much to demonstrate that women's roles in Middle-earth, as well as Tolkien's own attitudes towards females, are much more varied and complex than popular belief would have it.

The 14 essays are divided into five groups: Historical Perspectives, Power of Gender, Specific Characters, Earlier Literary Contexts, and Women Readers. As a former history teacher myself I most enjoyed two of the essays in the first section: John D. Rateliff's "The Missing Women," which challenges the conception that Tolkien spent his life in masculine society by detailing the women with whom he had family, social, and professional connections and by emphasizing his strong, and at the time unusual, support for women's higher education; and also Sharin Schroeder's "She Who Must Not Be Ignored," which examines gender and genre in both The Lord of the Rings and in such Victorian "boy's books" as H.R. Haggard's "She," which Tolkien is known to have read and enjoyed. I also liked "Power in Arda," by Edith L.Crowe and "The Fall and Repentence of Galadriel" by Romuald I. Lakowski in the second and third sections for their insights into Tolkien's ever changing conceptions about his sub-creation. And again because of my background in history I really liked Melissa A. Smith's "At Home And Abroad," on Eowyn as a war bride! The fourth section's "The Valkyrie Reflex" by Leslie A. Donovan makes some fascinating analyses of Galadriel, Eowyn, Arwen, and (!) Shelob while Maureen Dunn's "Hidden in Plain View" makes some fascinating comparisons between Shakespeare and Tolkien's female characters. The fifth section has one essay, Una McCormack's "Finding Ourselves in the "(Un)Mapped Lands," which describes some intriguing fanfictions on some of Tolkien's lesser known female characters like Ioreth and Lothiriel (as well as some Middle-earth women created by the fanfiction writers themselves).

As with any good collection of critical essays readers will find much with which to agree and disagree, but every selection is well worth reading. Most importantly, readers' appreciation for J.R.R. Tolkien's work will be enhanced by the insights and conclusions to be found within Perilous And Fair.

As one wanting to write on feminism and Tolkien, this book is indispensable. The articles in it are varied across subjects in relation to feminism and Tolkien, across time of Tolkien scholarship. What really helped me too was the bibliographic essay at the beginning because it gave me titles of other essays not covered in this work to start digging for as well! The editor did a fantastic job with this and my most recent paper would not have been as great without it. I look forward to using its resources in the future!

nice overview

I am totally new to the semiconductor industry and this book seems like a good introduction to dive in.

As a process integration engineer knowledge of semiconductor processes is critical and this book seemed like a good first step for people with no background.

It has chapters ranging from semiconductor processes to reliability physics.

Agreed there are a few grammatical errors here and there but the knowledge is rich.

i love this book. it has some very good tricks using coins and bills, which are extremly easy. very clear instructions. no skill nedded to do these tricks. it even has the misers dream in here. i recomend this book to the beggining magician intrested in money magic. you will learn alot.

Karl Fulves must have had a bad day when he wrote this plop.

If you think asking someone if they know where a certain word appears on a dollar bill is a magic trick, then this book is for you. Saying "where does an anagram of White Snow appear on a dollar" and then when they give up you point it out - is NOT MAGIC. It's not even a trick. Its just a rather sad puzzle or riddle.
Most of the tricks in this book are that bad. A lot of them don't take more than 2 lines to explain in the book.
There are a few good coin tricks, but they aren't 'self working' and involve palming. Some of the tricks aren't even coin tricks, they use bills. So its really money stunts.
If this book had been called "80 stunts that are rather cack and a couple of tricks that need some practise" it might have been more honest - but then it wouldn't have sold.
Fulves self working card trick books are awesome, but when it comes to coin magic he seems fairly clueless.

As a teacher, I find myself reading many books to prep for classes. I thought it might be interesting to read a book about reading faster."How Do You Speed Read?" Volume 1, by John Kelley gives great tips. After reading his book, I applied his suggestions and voila it really does work!
