Heartwarming story!
By Armchair Interviews
When a beautiful cardinal falls from a branch of a newly planted apple tree and is trapped in deep snow on Christmas Eve, Nicholas and his grandfather retrieve the cardinal and care for it until it's strong enough to fly. Grandfather Santos is from Mexico and he talks to Nicholas about the cardinals from his home. When Nicholas is an adult and his grandfather is long gone, each Christmas Eve the branches of the apple tree are filled with a grand surprise.

Christmas Eve Blizzard is a lovely story of a grandfather sharing his past and a child who puts the welfare of a bird before his own. The illustrations are beautiful and children will long to touch the pictures.

At the back of the book is a "Creative Minds" section and it is filled with information about bird trivia, what to do if you find an injured bird, how to make a bird feeder, etc. Recommended for ages 4-8.

Armchair Interviews says: Parents--read the book and then pick an activity to do with your children. It will be entertaining and educational. And most importantly, you will be having a great time together

This story unfolds as Nicholas and his grandpa are looking out the window at an apple tree they planted seven months ago. Nicholas is concerned that it is not strong enough to withstand the first snow of this Christmas season. Nicholas refers to his grandpa as Abuelo (grandpa). Abuelo assures Nicholas that the tree was well planted and will survive for years to come.

As he looks out the window Nicholas sees a red bird tumble off an apple branch onto a high drift of snow. Hurriedly putting on his coat, boots, hat and two scarves, he runs out into the storm. With the snow pelting his face, he pushes forward one step at a time. The bird is not moving and is almost covered with snow. He quickly wraps the cold bird in his extra scarf and hurries back to the house.

"I should be very angry, for going out in the blizzard," said grandpa. "Muy enojado, for going out in this blizzard." "Pequeno pajaro pobre- poor little bird." Grandpa builds a temporary cage for the cardinal, and Nichols adds a bowl of water and some seed. Grandpa tells Nicholas that his grandfather used to say, "When you do a good thing, good will come back to you."

The next morning the cardinal was hopping around in his cage and trying to fly out. It's time to release the bird so he can find his way home. "Merry Christmas," Nicholas whispers as the cardinal flies away. Years later people come from miles around to marvel at the wonder of Nicholas' apple tree, for every Christmas the branches are covered not with apples but with bright red cardinals.

Introduce your child to a few Spanish words while teaching him/her that good deeds are rewarded.

A Lovely Book That Evokes Feelings of Nostalgia
By Catherine M. Ipcizade
There are certain books that evoke emotion in us. Usually, it's because of nostalgia. We associate certain things with various times in our lives. When I happened to stumble upon Christmas Eve Blizzard, by Andrea Vlahakis, I felt a surge of nostalgia, for my own childhood, my own discoveries, and my own relationships with nature and with my grandparents.

Christmas Eve Blizzard is a beautifully written book. The messages in the book are appropriate for all ages. The illustrations, by Emanuel Schongut, delicately portray the harsh conditions of the storm and tell the tale in pictures as effectively as it is told in words.

Additionally, this book contains various phrases in Spanish. Nicholas refers to his grandpa as "abuelo," and they each intermingle a few Spanish words within the text. The words and phrases are identified within the book and are also included in a glossary in the back of the book.

The thing that makes Sylvan Dell books so unique is that they each contain a Creative Minds section in the back of the book. For educators, this information provides a wealth of classroom activity ideas. For moms and dads, this information is a great way to expand your child's knowledge and to learn various crafts you can do at home to teach your child about birds.

This is the perfect read-aloud book during the holidays or any time of year.

The Polar Regions: An Environmental History, by Adrian Howkins

The environmental histories of the Arctic and Antarctica are characterised by contrast and contradiction. These are places that have witnessed some of the worst environmental degradation in recent history. But they are also the locations of some of the most farsighted measures of environmental protection. They are places where people have sought to conquer nature through exploration and economic development, but in many ways they remain wild and untamed. They are the coldest places on Earth, yet have come to occupy an important role in the science and politics of global warming.

Despite being located at opposite ends of the planet and being significantly different in many ways, Adrian Howkins argues that the environmental histories of the Arctic and Antarctica share much in common and have often been closely connected. This book also argues that the Polar Regions are strongly linked to the rest of the world, both through physical processes and through intellectual and political themes. As places of inherent contradiction, the Polar Regions have much to contribute to the way we think about environmental history and the environment more generally.

Review
"The Arctic and Antarctic are truly poles apart, but they share interesting concerns, which their very contrast helps illuminate. By comparing their environmental histories, Adrian Howkins has brought them together in ways that everyone concerned with our shared Earth can appreciate. A valuable contribution to both polar studies and environmental history."
Stephen J. Pyne, Arizona State University

"Compelling portraits of the Arctic and Antarctic, past and present. A talented story-teller, Howkins offers a fast-paced journey to the ends of the Earth."
Ronald E. Doel, Florida State University

"The polar latitudes are among the final frontiers for environmental history. Hawkins' book, as much history of science and exploration as environmental history, takes us on a most engaging tour to both Arctic and Antarctic."
J.R. McNeill, Georgetown University

Not a light read, but a good book for the more-than-casual reader.
By Wildness
Adrian Howkins' new book "The Polar Regions: An Environmental History" is not going to be everyone. I would say it falls somewhere between scholarly/academic and general audience. It is well researched and well presented, but a little on the dry side. The casual reader will find it hard to keep up with and it lacking in content the casual reader likes to see in a book like this... photos, illustrations, etc. But if you are really looking to dive into the topic of the polar regions and especially their environmental history, this book will deliver for you.

History of the Human Relationship to the Polar Regions: The Arctic and Antarctica.
By mirasreviews
Adrian Howkins’ environmental history of “The Polar Regions” takes an unusual approach, not only in considering both the Arctic and Antarctica together, but in examining the myths and perceptions of these polar regions held by Europeans as well as indigenous Arctic cultures and how they shaped the human relationships to these environments, including competing views espoused by early explorers. This is an environmental history, meaning the relationship of humans to the polar environments, not a climate history, though that subject is breeched in the last chapters. Howkins identifies himself as a “moderate environmentalist” late in the book, but for most of the history, he employs a neutral tone when speaking of human ambition, accomplishment, and folly in the polar regions.

But first, Howkins makes a case for discussing these two socially disparate regions together. Humans have inhabited the Arctic for thousands of years, while no one even sighted Antarctica until 1820. But both regions were sites of human economic pursuits in the 18th and 19th centuries, both subject to Cold War jockeying in the 20th century, and both the object of environmental concerns in the 21st century. Howkins’ first chapter looks at the myths that informed people’s perceptions of these remote places, going back as far as ancient Rome and Greece, through the Enlightenment that endeavored to replace myth with science, and even more modern myths, such as competing theories as to why the Norse colonies in Greenland failed in the 15th century.

From here the author tackles one topic per chapter, discussing its bearing on both polar regions. Some topics overlap by their nature. For example, there is discussion of explorers in the chapter on economic development, and whaling in the chapter on the Cold War, even though these topics have their own chapters. “Scarcity and Abundance: Marine Exploitation” examines sealing and whaling, from native Inuit sealing to the excesses of commercial sealing and conservation efforts that resulted, before moving on to commercial and modern whaling. A chapter on “Polar Exploration” doesn’t go into high adventure stories but includes the miscalculations that left so many dead and the successes that made Norwegian Roald Amundsen the preeminent polar explorer of his age.

Admundsen’s perspective on the polar regions is contrasted with that of polar “booster” Vilhjalmur Stefansson in the chapter on “Economic Development”. Stefansson made a career in the early 20th century by selling the idea of the Arctic as friendly and ripe for development. And develop people did, establishing bases or colonies where they could. The Cold War produced an interesting divergence between the polar regions, as the Arctic became a site of military escalation between Western powers and the Soviet Union, while Antarctica became a “continent dedicated to peace and science” upon the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, and commercial whaling effectively ended in the 1980s.

“Exploitation and Preservation: Environmental Conflict” looks at more recent controversies, such as the 1967 discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska that led to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the contradictions of polar tourism, which represents exploitation and encourages preservation. In “The Polar Regions”, Adrian Howkins gives the reader an overview of the issues and attitudes concerning the human relationship with both the Arctic and Antarctica over the past few centuries. Remote, cold and apparently hostile to human needs, these regions have been the subject of much popular imagination and heroic and commercial ambition throughout the modern era.

An Academic Treatise
By L.W. Samuelson
This book contains some information I found interesting. The most important takeaway for me is the "anthropogenic feedback loop created in the Polar Regions as warming temperatures and melting ice make additional fossil fuel extraction possible, and as the burning of these fuels further increases temperature and melts polar ice." Howkins does a nice job of relaying the facts without injecting his own opinions and views, but, as a reader I want more than a bland, factual account.
When I finished reading The Polar Regions, I immediately checked to see if Adrain Howkins had ever visited the Arctic or the Antarctic. He has. Surely something an author has studied and visited and thought about would engender some passion and enthusiasm and some information he just had to share with the reader and yet this book is a dispassionate, sterile look at the polar regions. I think Howkins missed an opportunity by not describing the beauty of the poles, by not sharing some of the hardships the explorers faced in exploring these inhospitable regions through journal entries and other sources, and by not sharing some personal anecdotes about his own experiences on his visits to the poles. This leads me to believe that the audience for the book is other academics and not casual readers who are interested in our polar regions and that's okay, but don't buy this and expect to be entertained.

Timelike Diplomacy: Singularity Sky and Iron Sunrise, by Charles Stross

An exclusive two-in-one novel from the Science Fiction Book Club, set in Charles Stross' Eschaton Universe: Singularity Sky and Iron Sunrise. Singularity Sky: Spaceship engineer Martin Springfield and U.N. diplomat Rachel Mansour hail from an Earth that has gone through the Singularity, an accelerated technological and social evolution far beyond anything we can imagine. The Singularity was triggered by the Eschaton, a super-powerful being descended from humanity that can travel in time and that essentially rules the universe. Springfield and Mansour meet on the home world of the New Republic, a repressive, backwater society that has outlawed virtually all advanced technology other than that necessary for interstellar warfare. When one of the New Republic's colonial worlds is besieged by the Festival, an enigmatic alien intelligence, the Republic counterattacks, using time travel in an attempt to put its warships in position to catch the Festival by surprise. Springfield and Mansour, working for different masters, have both been assigned the task of either diffusing the crisis or sabotaging the New Republic's warfleet, no matter what the cost. Iron Sunrise: In the 24th century, a McWorld ("bland, comfortable, tolerant... boring") called New Moscow apparently has been destroyed by trade rival New Dresden-but not before New Moscow launched its own Slower-Than-Light (STL) counterstrike: a massive ship accelerated to 80% the speed of light. The U.N., now central Earth government, knows New Dresden was set up. They need the STL's recall code, now known only to a handful of New Moscow's ambassadors-but someone has been systematically assassinating them. U.N. special operative Rachel Mansour and her husband, engineer Martin Springfield, must protect the last living ambassador and find out who's really responsible for the whole mess.

Combined edition of _Singularity Sky_ and _Iron Sunrise_
By Amazon Customer
According to a posting by Stross in the Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine forum, this is an combined edition of the two books mentioned in the subject line.

That said, both books are excellent. _singularity Sky_, in particular, is one of the better science fiction novels of the past few years, combining hard science, Vinge-style speculation, and a strong prose style.

Singularity Big Time
By Avid Reader
This is a double publication - SINGULARITY SKY & IRON SUNRISE. The pairing is not accidental - the stories could be considered Singularity Part I & II. The name, TIMELIKE DIPLOMACY, is a perfect description of the themes of both novels - namely the machinations of humanity when faster-than-light travel is developed (thus time travel) and the super-intelligent Eschaton (the name given to the Singularity) must battle those who would return to the past and take steps to prevent its emergence. (A conundrum though - if someone had returned to the past and prevented the emergence of the Singularity how could it be worried about someone going to the past to prevent the emergence.... someone could go crazy thinking of all the causal possibilities).

We are introduced to Martin and Rachel, espionage operatives working for different bosses (Martin for the Eschaton, Rachel for the U.N.) and follow their travails in preventing the destruction of a civilization for attempting to violate the laws of causality. In the second book (IRON SKY) we are introduced to the teenager, Wednesday / Victoria and the newspaper writer, Frank and their fast-paced struggles both to escape those who would do them harm and learn who their pursuers are. Of course all four characters come together in the midst of a frantic action and the story has a good ending. I eagerly await yet another sequeal.

Stross has opened to the reader the world on nanotechnology, smart matter, genetic modification beyond our wildest dream. Indeed, the everyday actions appear to us almost as magic, much as the technological wonders of our civilization would appear magical to someone from the early 20th century. Yielding to readers's pleas, Stross has penned ACCELERANDO, the story of the emergence of the Singularity in the near future. (It does not feature the same characters.)

Libertarian "hard" sci-fi, with unresolved questions
By Michael P. Adams
An AI shows up, and transplants most of humanity to other stars. Thanks to time dilation, the seeded planets develop into different fiefdoms: ones that seem to thumb their noses at "stateless Earth". Earth, in the wake of the AI event, develops a commercialized 900-member UN; to handle a Libertarian society equipped with "cornucopia machines" that make anything a person may want. But there are some inconsistencies...

* The protagonist is maybe 150 years old; but you're left with the impression she's old enough to have lived before the AI.
* Its unclear if the AI was developed on Earth, or is an alien one.
* The first half/book has an odd version of time-travel: use FTL tunneling to go 4000 years into the future; to bounce back to a few months before a past event?
* The second half/book suggests there's a second AI trying to kill off the first one. And its helped out by space Nazis.

I will give credit to the author for attempting to at least make "hard" sci-fi: but the plot points and events almost nullify the benefit of that effort.

Replay, by Ken Grimwood

Jeff Winston, forty-three, didn't know he was a replayer until he died and woke up twenty-five years younger in his college dorm room; he lived another life. And died again. And lived again and died again -- in a continuous twenty-five-year cycle -- each time starting from scratch at the age of eighteen to reclaim lost loves, remedy past mistakes, or make a fortune in the stock market. A novel of gripping adventure, romance, and fascinating speculation on the nature of time, Replay asks the question: "What if you could live your life over again?"

  • a time-travel novel as haunting as Jack Finney's Time and Again

From Publishers Weekly
In this intriguing fantasy adventure, Jeff Winston, a failing 43-year-old radio journalist, dies and wakes up in his 18-year-old body in 1963 with his memories of the next 25 years intact. He views the future from the perspective of naive 1963: "null-eyed punks in leather and chains . . . death-beams in orbit around the polluted, choking earth . . . his world sounded like the most nightmarish of science fiction." But Grimwood has transcended genre with this carefully observed, literate and original story. Jeff's knowledge soon becomes as much a curse as a blessing. After recovering from the shock (is the future a dream, or is it real life?), he plays out missed choices. In one life, for example, he falls in love with Pamela, a housewife who died nine minutes after Jeff; they try to warn the world of the disasters it faces, coming in conflict with the government and history. A third replayer turns out to be a serial killer, murdering the same people over and over. Jeff and Pamela are still searching for some missing part of their lives when they notice they are returning closer and closer to the time of their deaths, and realize that the replays and their times together may be coming to an end. 60,000 first printing; 75,000 ad/promo; film rights to United Artists; Literary Guild selection.

From Library Journal
The possibility of traveling back in time to relive one's life has long fascinated science fiction writers. Without a single gesture toward an explanation, this mainstream novel recounts the story of a man and a woman mysteriously given the ability to live their lives over. Each dies in 1988 only to awaken as a teenager in 1963 with adult knowledge and wisdom intact and the ability to make a new set of choices. Different spouses, lovers, children, careers, await them in each go-round of the past 25 years, as well as slightly altered versions of world events. Their deep commitment to one another continues through the centuries of their many lifetimes. This delightful and completely engrossing story will appeal to a wide variety of readers. If it were written today he would spend all his lives binge-watching TV and getting into arguments on social media
By Michael Battaglia
What if you could live your life over again, but without the benefit of being Bill Murray? That's the dilemma that Jeff Winston winds up facing here. When we first meet him he's in his mid-forties, stuck in a job that he doesn't seem to find as fulfilling as he used to and his marriage isn't so much unraveling as ossifying, old arguments turning into a very solid resentment that will probably last for the rest of their lives. Jeff is primed for a mid-life crisis of sorts, but instead of getting a hot young girlfriend or a new car, he gets something entirely different: a massive fatal heart attack. And that's how we start.

But as you can probably tell since the book is called "Replay" and not "All the Bad Decisions I Don't Remember Making Eventually Haunt Me", Grimwood isn't so much interested in how we get here as much as what happens afterwards. And in this case, Jeff dies and wakes up . . . in 1963, with the body of his eighteen year old self and all the memories of his life from that point until he dies in the late eighties. At a loss for what to do, Jeff does what anyone else would probably do in the same situation: massively bet on the outcomes of future sports events to secure himself vast amounts of wealth and set himself up for a comfortable existence (if nothing else, this teaches me to pay more attention to who wins the World Series, as you really never know when it might come in handy) then making shrewd investments in companies that he knows will do well in the future. All is going swell, he's living his life almost exactly as he's envisioned it.

Then he reaches the eighties and dies again. Thus a slight snag in the plan appears.

And so it goes for this latter day Billy Pilgrim, who isn't so much unstuck in time as ricocheting back and forth like a rubber ball in the middle of two metronomes. Beyond the concept, which apparently did influence "Groundhog Day", Grimwood takes a deceptively simple writing style (I managed to polish the whole book off in about three hours max) and proceeds to milk the basic idea for all its worth. He applies a realistic filter to Jeff's first time through the merry-go-round, having him do all the things that most normal people would do in the same situation (including trying to change history . . . with unexpectedly interesting results) but by forcing him to repeat all that all over again (and again) he gives up an opportunity to keep revisiting the same scenario but with new wrinkles added each and every time. He attempts to rectify mistakes he made in his original life, tries to shake a sense of loss for what he left behind in previous run-throughs, all the while operating with the knowledge of the one thing that most of us will never know for certain: when he's going to die and how. He's not even sure if he'll come back each time but his constant struggle to both avoid his fate and try something different with his life each time makes for oddly engaging reading, as Grimwood keeps recreating the same scenarios but weighed with Jeff's knowledge of all his past lives layered on top of him, a burden he can't quite embrace nor escape.

And yet Grimwood keeps making it interesting, like a wheel running over the same track again, working the groove deeper and deeper. On one of his go-rounds, Jeff comes to realize he isn't the only one reliving his life repeatedly and that wrinkle of two people trapped in overlapping loops of the same cycle, falling in love and losing each other and having to figure out how to find each other again, greatly opens up the possibilities of the book. He varies the repetition just enough so that you notice the differences more than the similarities, managing to simultaneously convey the joy of having your whole life ahead of you again, the drudgery of having to plod through the boring parts once more (I didn't mind high school and college at the time but the thought of having to go through and study for all those classes again with my old and shriveled late thirties mind is terrifying on some level) and the anxiety that comes when knowing exactly how much time you have only means that you're more aware than anyone else how absurdly little it really is. For Jeff and the woman who becomes his companion its like riding a treadmill tilted downward and coated in oil, you can fight as hard as you want to stay upright and stay on the belt but eventually you're going to fall away back to the start again.

The fact that any of this succeeds is due to Grimwood's ability to give us forward momentum even when the plot is literally doubling back on itself. His imagination for the different scenarios is fantastic enough, like dropping the same actors into the same framework for a play over and over again and watching them improvise a different result based on what's gone before. He manages to keep the feel of it realistic by focusing on the characters themselves and how they react to something, both in their despairs and how they make it work (and for contrast he throws in a third person apparently experiencing the same phenomenon, whose reaction to it makes their wackiest moments seem like utter pillars of rationality), whether its buying stocks, betting on horse races, or making movies. What he doesn't do, and which I sorely appreciate, is make the focus on the book the characters' quests for the ultimate "why" this is all happening. Different explanations are floated and the reader can probably come up with their own theories, whether time itself is broken, or its aliens running an experiment or even some test from a higher power, but the characters quickly realize, as much as the reader probably will, that the explanation isn't the point. Knowing the why doesn't tell you anything beyond maybe that God as a weird sense of humor. Ultimately the characters are too busy living to worry about that and that's where the meat of the book lies, in the second and third chances that we all want but never get, the changes we make within ourselves with the weight of experience, the tragedy of loss and the joy of reconnecting and the grim certainty that even if you had all the time in the world, it would still be too little (something hammered home later when it becomes clear the intervals between dying and being reborn are becoming shorter and shorter).

There's a line in one of my favorite Robert Frost poems that goes "I'd like to get away from Earth awhile/and come back to it and begin over" and here Grimwood makes us ask ourselves, what would we do if we had to do it all over again? Is fixing your mistakes (or what you perceive to be mistakes) the point? Is it the opportunity to try new things, to see if all those paths we never took would actually lead us somewhere better? Or is it simply worth the chance to revel in the day to day progression once more and not worry whether we get it right the whole time. Jeff ends the novel in nearly the exact place he began it, and yet it would be difficult to suggest he's the same person. Still, were his opportunities any better or more open than ours? You don't have to feel trapped to want to make a change and you don't need a freak spasm of time to give you an excuse. In a sense, we have it better than Jeff does for a good chunk of the book. Forced to go over the same temporal ground repeatedly, he has to make the most of limited tools and see his progress, for good or ill, erased. But for us, every day forward gives a chance to move away from where we were and push ahead to a horizon that might reside where we need to be. Within the borders of our years, we are boundless, perhaps more than we realize.

How would you live you life again?
By Solari
Originally published in 1986, Replay is a time travel story with a twist. It raises the question: what would you do if you died right now and woke up 25 years ago back in your teenage body? What if this happened several times and you could relive your life again, and again, and again?

[THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS]

The plot begins with Jeff Winston, a 43-year-old radio broadcaster that dies of a heart attack in 1988 during a phone conversation with his wife. He immediately wakes up back in 1963 and how he was at 18, still a law school student, but now with the memory of everything that would happen in the next 25 years.

The first thing that Jeff does is become a millionaire, by betting – correctly – in all the sports events he remembers. The he goes to Las Vegas, gets a trophy wife, becomes a billionaire as he knows the best company stocks to buy. Despites his efforts taking better care of his health and having a whole hospital at his disposal, Jeff dies again in 1988 and wakes up back in 1963, in a phenomenon that would repeat itself several more times.

Jeff balances himself between omnipotence and impotence. He tries to stop JFK’s assassination before it happens, but the president ends up killed by someone else. He tries to find his old wife in his new life, who drives him off in some lives and accepts him in others, evolving a different personality each time. He has a daughter in a life, who he fears will be lost in a limbo when he “reboots”. And Jeff accumulates a knowledge that he has no one to share with. Until he discovers he is not the only one “replaying” his life.

It is very interesting how the character goes through different stages along his replays, enthusiasm, depression, acceptance. Author Ken Grimwood showed great sensibility recreating all these existences, with moments of new happiness and new pain. The point that came across to me is that if we lived our lives again we wouldn’t correct the mistakes of the past, we would only make new ones. Replay is a book that transcends science fiction and makes the reader think about their own story.

Knockout book about what it means to be alive
By Gary Schroeder
Let’s just get to the point: Replay is simply one of the best novels that I’ve read in a long time, the kind of book that you’re sorry to see come to an end and, after the last page, one finds it hard to return to the “real world.” Published in 1988, Replay is basically a mid-life fantasy novel in which our hero Jeff Winston gets the unexpected opportunity to live his life over again. I’m not giving anything away by saying that he dies from a heart attack in his 40s only to reawaken as an 18 year old freshman in college. After the initial shock, he’s forced to conclude that it’s no dream; he really is re-living his life over again. He has the miraculous opportunity to do it all over…except this time, he’ll get it right. With his foreknowledge of the future, he can not only make himself wealthy, but he can avoid getting trapped into the same failed relationships that ended when he “died.” What person in their 40s hasn't wondered how things might have been different or whether or not they’ve made the most of the time that they’ve been given? Replay explores that question in elegant ways.

I wouldn’t want to give away any of the details of what Jeff learns along the way since that would ruin the enjoyment of reading the book for yourself, but I will say that author Ken Grimwood has crafted a classic here, a book that I’m surprised is not more well known. He skillfully covers universal adult themes of regret, longing, and confusion over just what the inherent meaning of life is. He delves deeply into the joys and sorrows of marriage, children, money, power, sex, and personal fulfillment. He does this so well that you may feel—as I did—as if you’ve actually had the opportunity to live multiple lives and reach the same conclusions about Universal Meaning as the protagonist does. As a result, you may be just a little more joyful about the life and the chances that you have today—right now. Replay achieves what the best fiction always does: it awakens us to fundamental truths.

One final note: the book initially has the feel of a standard time travel novel in that there are no great surprises in the first 100 pages or so…but stick with it. There’s a great twist right in the middle of the book that significantly changes its trajectory and allows it to break away from the rest of the genre.

This is a good book if you need encouragement.
By Michael Gordon
Noah Kagan offers a very intriguing look at what it is like to be an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are people who are not satisfied with the status quo. We have a strong desire to find better ways to do things. Rather than accept things as they are, we are able to imagine better solutions for people. I can imagine the dissatisfaction working for a large enterprise like Intel. In a large organization, it is very hard to feel as though one is anything more than a cog in the machine. Most people are not happy with their work at a large organization. Instead, they want to feel that they are doing something that has meaning. For an entrepreneur, if people are buying our service or product, it's a sign that we have successfully solved a problem for other people. There are always new solutions that we must work on. That is part of the exciting thing about being an entrepreneur. Even though Kagan got fired from Facebook, he doesn't trash Facebook or the managers at Facebook. He accepts responsibility and realizes that he needs to continue to work on the next path. A true entrepreneur certainly looks forward rather than backwards. This is a good book if you need encouragement.

If you are interested in the title & concept, you'll find this book a very good read.

A very interesting read. Well worth the time. Tyvm to the Author for creating it.
I wonder if the author realizes that he was never, in any way, going to really, actually get the stock payout. I think he never was going to get that money from the start, I think there was no intention. While there may have been an initial desire, I think that was yanked off the table as an option by some covert force/person who took a long look at who was getting what payouts and when it was found he was going to get a huge amount, plans were set in place to get rid of him sooner or later. This is the Wild, Wild West out here in California. I think he was trusting, transparent to those nearby, had passive-aggressive hostile coworkers, and despite the agreement he was taken advantage of.

I look forward to reading any more books this author writes as well as seeing his successes.

This book was very insightful for me. Maybe because I like Noah and his writing style. A lot of people seem to judge this book as if they were expecting to read a PhD 800 pages research... The book is clearly about Noah and how he was acting and thinking a decade ago. To me, reading the thoughts and mistakes from a successful young entrepreneur its very valuable. It's a free book, but even if it wasn't I wouldn't consider a "waste of time". Normally I would have rated it four stars because to be honest, it isn't a 5star book, but seeing all those people rating it a one star it's just not fare. The author put time and efforts to present us the best way he can with all that he had in his mind. If you think that's easy, try to do better! Go Noah! Continue to inspire us and provide value to thousands of entrepreneurs.
